Do you know a large Midwest family? Well, if you do, then you know me.  I am the youngest of eight, raised in a small farmers'​ village in the Netherlands. If I picked an apple from the wrong tree on my way home from school, my parents would know about it before I got off my bike.

The family name is like a bank account, and my family has put their savings in it for over 50 years.  We are not rich, but the van der Kooij's are known for our hard work, and willingness to help others. So we never needed a lot of money. For my family, our reputation is the most valued asset and trust is the currency we trade in.  Every day.

Fast forward to today, a time where the subscription (SaaS) business model is impacting organizations big and small.   Why?  Because in the subscription business you MUST make a client successful!  You have to earn an honest word-of-mouth reference by exceeding a client's expectation. You have to work hard and build a reputation. I recognize this as these are the norms and values I was raised on, and I know exactly what to do.

Wrapped up an incredible visit to #Japan on Friday - with a once in a lifetime failure on Tokyo's rail system and chance to observe Japan's famed crisis response in action - huge queues, but no agression. 

Also met 20 #founders during office hours hosted by Takeoff Tokyo with collaboration from Shibuya Startup Support. Lots of exceptional talent - especially at the intersection of #robotics and #AI.

Japan's startup ecosystem has doubled in the last 5 odd years and the government wants it to quadruple in the next 10 - a great place to build tomorrow's global titans and we look forward to backing them.

The #startup ecosystem in the #GCC has grown significantly in the last 2 - 3 years with Saudi Arabia and UAE being the standout markets.
  
It's still a relatively new #ecosystem (pre/seed deals account for 80%+ of all deals), but maturing rapidly. 

Some titans (like Careem, Tabby) have already been created and I'm sure plenty of tomorrow's titans are being started now! I'm in the region - visiting the key places and look forward to meeting globally ambitious founders and #LPs looking to harness innovation from Asia, Europe and US.

Back in autumn 2024, Leo Capital announced two bold moves:
- their expansion to Finland
- the launch of Europe Fund I (€20M)

The announcement came after both partners Shwetank Verma and Rajul Garg spent some time in Helsinki as part of the #90DayFinn program. They got the chance to immerse themselves in the Nordic ecosystem, meeting founders, investors, and operators, and seeing first-hand what the region has to offer.

Fast-forward to today and the impact is already tangible 👇
🔹 3 strategic investments in Finland-based companies (and many more in the pipeline)
🔹 A dedicated Vice President, Olga Balakina now sourcing and supporting deals in the region

One of their first investments was in QuantrolOx with Springvest Oyj and Voima Ventures. This was followed by NROC Security, where Leo Capital joined a $2M seed round led by Great North Ventures, alongside Icebreaker.vc and angel investors. Last but not least, Leo Capital not only invested in Blueprint Crusher but also convinced the founders to start building the company from Finland.
