Do you know a large Midwest family? Well, if you do, then you know me.  I am the youngest of eight, raised in a small farmers'​ village in the Netherlands. If I picked an apple from the wrong tree on my way home from school, my parents would know about it before I got off my bike.

The family name is like a bank account, and my family has put their savings in it for over 50 years.  We are not rich, but the van der Kooij's are known for our hard work, and willingness to help others. So we never needed a lot of money. For my family, our reputation is the most valued asset and trust is the currency we trade in.  Every day.

Fast forward to today, a time where the subscription (SaaS) business model is impacting organizations big and small.   Why?  Because in the subscription business you MUST make a client successful!  You have to earn an honest word-of-mouth reference by exceeding a client's expectation. You have to work hard and build a reputation. I recognize this as these are the norms and values I was raised on, and I know exactly what to do.

Some products stay with you... Workplace is one of them.

I had the chance to be there early and help contribute to its growth, and I still hear from people who genuinely miss it. -because for many teams, it was the first time internal communication actually felt… human-.

The magic combo 1/ mobile first 2/ async/group-based collaboration 3/ rich composer 4/ and a much better balance between signal and noise just created magic. 

Point 4/ is now becoming a no brainer in the AI era. GenAI increases content. Agents increase actions => more noise, less human. Fact is enterprise collaboration tools are still built for a pre-AI world.

So I’m incredibly excited to see Slashwork coming to life. And even more excited because of who is building it: Jackson, Josh and Dave -1000X engineers -, with Julien from 20VC (who else?) and an amazing group of supporters behind them - including plenty of former Workplace customers and users :). 

Also… if you know the Workplace community, you know this is not just a product story. It’s a bit of a reunion too 🙂. I’m proud to be involved in a small way.

Chief Growth Officer at Maki People - Hiring in NYC, London, and Paris-

After a relatively short but intense chapter, I've decided to move on from MakiPeople. I enjoyed this time a lot - lots of building, grinding, hiring, winning, new connections, and learnings along the way-.

3 main things I will keep from this great journey.

1/ The market is massive. In 2–4 years, I believe people will look back and be shocked to learn that first-round screening interviews were ever conducted by humans at scale, based on CVs alone.

2/ Maki is unique in this category. There are many new entrants chasing this opportunity but only Maki combines the power of AI with in-house psychometric science and built-in compliance. Gokul recently laid out what a real moat looks like in the AI world... Maki checks several boxes. And it's exactly why Booking.com, Deloitte, BNP Paribas and other Fortune 500 enterprises chose to adopt Maki agents.

3/ The foundations are exceptionally strong. The team and culture built by Maxime, Paul Louis, and Benjamin Chino are something special (and I'm not just talking about the most incredible offsites). Over the last 10 months, we built a new revenue operating engine that is unlocking significant growth, and the best of which are still ahead.

I've been consistently vocal about my belief in Maki's mission and in this space. That hasn't changed. I'll always be a Maki supporter.

A huge thank you to Maxime, Paul Louis, Benjamin, and Damien for the trust, the (infinite :)) energy, and everything we built together. And a special shout-out to my fantastic GTM team. Keep that ownership mindset and sense of urgency. Only good things come from it.
