Do you know a large Midwest family? Well, if you do, then you know me.  I am the youngest of eight, raised in a small farmers'​ village in the Netherlands. If I picked an apple from the wrong tree on my way home from school, my parents would know about it before I got off my bike.

The family name is like a bank account, and my family has put their savings in it for over 50 years.  We are not rich, but the van der Kooij's are known for our hard work, and willingness to help others. So we never needed a lot of money. For my family, our reputation is the most valued asset and trust is the currency we trade in.  Every day.

Fast forward to today, a time where the subscription (SaaS) business model is impacting organizations big and small.   Why?  Because in the subscription business you MUST make a client successful!  You have to earn an honest word-of-mouth reference by exceeding a client's expectation. You have to work hard and build a reputation. I recognize this as these are the norms and values I was raised on, and I know exactly what to do.

I've been the bummer on more than one AI panel.

While everyone's talking prompts and productivity, I keep saying: this is a real revolution. And real revolutions are violent — not eventually. Now.

Our tech worker community is smart, curious, and genuinely excited about AI. I am too.

But I think we're buying into the gloss.

We talk about AI like it's a neutral toolkit we apply to GTM motions and internal ops efficiencies. We don't talk about what happens when you plug that toolkit into existing systems of power, profit, and enforcement.

So I wrote the piece I've been trying not to write.

For years, we've been great at capturing data. Logging calls. Updating fields. Checking boxes.

Because what's true on the first call is outdated by the fourth. 

The pain point they mentioned in discovery? It evolved! The stakeholder who was championing this? They're on PTO now! Someone new is asking questions!

And here's the thing: expectations keep rising.

We're all used to tools like ChatGPT remembering who we are and what we've been working on — and that becomes the new standard. Our buyers expect that same seamless experience.

If your AE is asking "remind me, what was your timeline again?" on call three? 

Credibility in the 🚽 

And if we don't give buyers that experience, someone else will.
