Subconscious sabotage from others does more damage than we know.

Last night I asked my hairdresser to cut my hair short.

She’s known me for years but only ever with long hair.

She knew that every time I’d gone short with other hair dressers in the past it’s ended up looking a bit frumpy or not quite me.

But I was ready… and she cut it.

But she left the length safe and longer than what I wanted. It was unlike her, but she was overly cautious and hesitated. 


So when I said, “Can we go shorter?”
she did…

…but not without resistance.

And this is the part that is rarely talked about when you decide to change.

You can make the decision.
You can take the action.
You can voice it clearly…

But your environment is still calibrated to who you used to be.

So even when you initiate the change,
the people around you can dampen it.
And it’s definitely not malicious. 

I see this with creative founders all the time.

They decide to:
raise their prices
focus their positioning
stop over-delivering 
sell differently
lead more directly

…but their environment, collaborators, even friends keep relating to them like they’re still the same as they used to be

This puts you in a bind…

Do you mould yourself back into the environment

At some point, and it’s different for everyone, getting better at the work doesn’t automatically translate into better business.

The tricky part is recognising when that shift has happened.

✨ What role do clients believe you’re there to play?
✨ Are you brought in to execute their plan?
✨ Or are you involved in shaping those decisions in the first place?

In my experience, price tends to shift once the perceived role shifts.
Small improvements to the portfolio rarely increase the rates in any meaningful way.

If your work is solid but your growth feels flat, it may be worth examining your positioning before assuming you need another course that is focused on creative skill development.

I recently came across the LinkedIn profile of Rabih Fakhreddine.

After reading through several of his posts, one thing stood out.

He doesn’t use LinkedIn like most founders.

Most founder content falls into two categories:
• announcements
• generic leadership advice

His posts do something more interesting.

They translate real work into industry thinking.

Here are three patterns I noticed.

#𝟏 𝐇𝐞 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐬
Most founders post when something launches.

Rabih does something different.

He uses the project as a starting point to explain a larger shift in the industry.

Instead of focusing on the venue or concept itself, he talks about things like:
• destination strategy
• ecosystem thinking
• how districts outperform standalone venues

So the post stops being an update.

It becomes a point of view about the future of hospitality.

That’s what positions someone as an industry voice.

#2 𝐇𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐬
Another thing you notice quickly is the structure.

Short, clear statements that frame a bigger idea.

Not long storytelling.
Not motivational language.

Just clean leadership principles.

This works well on LinkedIn because it travel fast. They’re easy to remember.
Easy to quote. Easy to associate with the person who said them.

Over time, that builds recognition around how someone thinks.

#3 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠

When many founders share announcements, the post becomes promotion.

His announcements still reinforce his positioning as an operator.

He shows:
• execution speed
• aligned partnerships
• how projects move from idea to reality

So even an update subtly communicates - this is how we build things. And that matters more than the announcement itself.

It’s about making your thinking visible through the work you’re already doing.

That’s what people start following.

In the current regional situation, I’ve received a few messages asking if we are safe in #Kuwait.

I truly appreciate the concern.

What I’ve experienced here so far is calm.
Life is moving. People are going to work. Shops are open.

There’s a quiet sense of steadiness.

May Allah protect Kuwait and everyone in the region.

Hoping for safety and ease for all.

Three days ago, I shared a short post about staying calm during the current regional tension.

Later that day, a founder sent me a message.

He asked something simple.
“What should leaders post during times like this? Should they even post or stay quiet?”

It’s a fair question.

Because posting the wrong thing can feel worse than saying nothing.

And saying nothing can make it look like you’re not paying attention.

After working with more than 20 founders and senior leaders in the Middle East, I’ve noticed something else.

Too much “personal branding” can quietly damage trust.

Not because you’re doing something wrong.

But because most personal branding advice was written for a different kind of audience.

And a different region.

In many places, attention builds authority.
But in the Middle East, credibility usually comes first.

So when leaders follow the usual playbook —
more posts
more visibility
more personal stories
something starts to feel… off.

Not loud.

Just slightly misaligned.

You don’t want to look like a LinkedIn creator.
You want to look like a serious leader.
