Subconscious sabotage from others does more damage than we know.

Last night I asked my hairdresser to cut my hair short.

She’s known me for years but only ever with long hair.

She knew that every time I’d gone short with other hair dressers in the past it’s ended up looking a bit frumpy or not quite me.

But I was ready… and she cut it.

But she left the length safe and longer than what I wanted. It was unlike her, but she was overly cautious and hesitated. 


So when I said, “Can we go shorter?”
she did…

…but not without resistance.

And this is the part that is rarely talked about when you decide to change.

You can make the decision.
You can take the action.
You can voice it clearly…

But your environment is still calibrated to who you used to be.

So even when you initiate the change,
the people around you can dampen it.
And it’s definitely not malicious. 

I see this with creative founders all the time.

They decide to:
raise their prices
focus their positioning
stop over-delivering 
sell differently
lead more directly

…but their environment, collaborators, even friends keep relating to them like they’re still the same as they used to be

This puts you in a bind…

There’s a phase in every creative business where improving your creative skill will genuinely move the needle.

At some point, and it’s different for everyone, getting better at the work doesn’t automatically translate into better business.

The tricky part is recognising when that shift has happened.

✨ What role do clients believe you’re there to play?
✨ Are you brought in to execute their plan?
✨ Or are you involved in shaping those decisions in the first place?

In my experience, price tends to shift once the perceived role shifts.
Small improvements to the portfolio rarely increase the rates in any meaningful way.

If your work is solid but your growth feels flat, it may be worth examining your positioning before assuming you need another course that is focused on creative skill development.

This is the role that needed me to suit up and become a jack of all trades. 

Coming from a marketing department, I had very little background on eCommerce content. I have worked on building a couple of eCommerce sites for my previous employer's subsidiaries, an edutech and dairy company. 

But at Weaveroo, I had to learn to write, design, and judge enhanced eCommerce content while also utilising AI-powered applications to build enhanced product pages at scale. I'm talking AI before Chat-GPT became mainstream. 

I went on to work on creating enhanced content and conversion optimisation for product pages on,

I've been ghostwriting for acquaintances since my final year of college, and this was my first full-time job writing content all day. I am self-taught when it comes to marketing, and this role taught me a lot since I got to work with every wing of a fast-paced, global marketing team that was always on the roll. I reported directly to the head of marketing and worked closely with managers of the various wings, content and email marketing mainly. 

I was majorly responsible for,
1. Creating SEO content for blogs of the various business units.
2. Reviewing and editing blog articles submitted by freelancers and sending them feedback for improvement.
3. Creating copy for email marketing.
4. Crafting scripts for videos.
5. Writing landing pages for all business units and course pages for Texila's edutech startup.

One of my significant contributions to the organization included single-handedly planning and executing the content strategy for an e-learning marketplace that was meant to serve various international markets, allowing students to carry on with their coursework even during disasters like COVID-19 that was rampant during my days at the company. 

And here is where I fell in love with the rich and interesting field of user experience design and UX writing.

My first job handling words and data. This is where I learnt the art of copyediting and proofreading. In the early days of COVID-19's uncontrolled spread, I was cozy in my desk copyediting research papers that involved the very disease. 

I went on to work for well-established scientific publications like Hindawi, Wiley, The American Geophysical Union, and Elsevier. 

I reached my peak capacity of editing 120 pages per day before I realised that my passion was in something else, writing. 

I moved away from copyediting and slowly toward content writing full-time.
