June 2022: I got accepted to speak at TEDx.

But it made me feel like an imposter.

I kept thinking:

“They’ve made a mistake.”
“I don’t belong on that stage.”
”What the heck did I get myself into?”

But I said yes anyway.
Now that talk has opened doors I couldn’t have dreamed of.

But none of that would’ve happened if I had said no.

This year can pass quietly.

Women are judged before they even speak.

(How I deal with this as a brown woman)

Men are (usually) heard.
Women are (usually) evaluated.

Too much makeup.
Too little makeup.
Too covered up.
Too revealing.
Too much.

So advice like
“Just be confident”
falls flat.

Here’s what actually helps.

Don’t try to be liked.
Aim to be clear.

Say your point early.
State it once.
Then pause.

No more over-explaining.
No more “softening” your tone.
Just calmness, conciseness, clarity.  

And then watch all the judgement fall away.

PS ever felt judged no matter what your gender is?

If people lose respect for you,

it’s almost impossible to gain it back.

Check if you’re doing any of these things
(they damage your reputation):

1. Making everything about yourself.

This is a huge turn off.
It shows people you don’t care as much about them.

→ Make people feel seen by including them.

2. Being rude to waiters, assistants, staff.

No-brainer, but when you’re in a bad mood -
Taking it out on others shows you’re inconsiderate.

→ “Please” and “thank you” go a long, long way.

3. Complaining about your life.

I’ve been guilty of this.
But it shows people you’re a negative person.

→ Add one positive thing for every complain.

I created LinkedIn’s first course on AI and public speaking.

But here’s where you should not use AI:

Look, I love AI.

But this MIT study shows that relying on AI:

→ Decreases your brain connectivity.
→ Weakens your memory.
→ Makes you less creative.

This doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t use AI.

But use it to enhance your creativity.

Not outsource it.

Here’s my take as a public speaking coach:

→ Always come up with the key ideas yourself.
→ Use AI to critique and build on your ideas.
→ AI becomes your co-creator, not your ghostwriter.

You bring the personality, ideas, stories.

AI enhances and packages it.

Win-win.

A “fake” smile destroys trust.

I’ll show you how to spot a real vs fake smile:

You see two smiles in the picture.

One is genuine.
One is fake.

Can you tell which one’s real?

Here’s the best way to find out:

A fake smile doesn’t reach the eyes.
A real smile includes your eyes smiling too.

When you notice someone’s mouth smiling -
But their eyes don’t - 
There is a disconnect.

That makes your brain uncomfortable.

And an uncomfortable brain doesn’t trust easily.

(This is why you should “smile with your eyes”).

You never know what a “fake smile” is hiding.
Now you know how to spot one.
