My partner and I had just signed a new lease so we could build a life together.

Something fulfilling.
Something that didn’t drain me mentally or emotionally.

I remember waking up to the first email in my inbox:

Insufficient funds.

I froze.

I couldn’t understand how it happened.
I felt the panic spread through my entire body.

We’re so used to seeing the highlight reel online.
Someone quits their job…
Cut to: million-dollar launch. Lambo. Freedom.

Quit my 9 to 5 job and my bank account overdrafted

I’m 37 and I’m finally living this obvious truth people have been saying for years. It’s changed me for life.

Your brain is like a tape recorder.

It records what you’re exposed to, processes it, and plays it back as your thoughts, words, and actions.

There are neural pathways constantly wiring and rewiring based on your environment. The beliefs you hold aren’t random. They’re shaped by what you repeatedly see, hear, and experience.

If you’re serious about changing your life in any way, small or extreme, one of the core ingredients is this:

Change your environment.

Change the places you spend time.
Change the people you’re around most.
This includes your digital environment.

Not from judgment.
From preference.

If you want to be an entrepreneur, go live with founders.
If you want to expand your life, surround yourself with people who already have.

For me, I’ve always felt called to reach my fullest potential. Freedom. Travel. Impact. Using the privileges I’ve been given to help others.

So I moved to Bali.

Everywhere I went, I was around people who had left their jobs, built their own paths, and were designing lives on purpose.

That proximity matters.

This isn’t about thinking one group is better than another. You can love people deeply and still recognize that what you want for your life is different.

Loving them.
And loving yourself enough to honor your path.

What I’ve learned about the brain is this:

Don’t just look for like-minded people.
Look for like-valued people.

Shared values.
Different perspectives.

That’s powerful.

It meets your emotional needs while challenging your thinking.
It prevents groupthink.
It creates growth.

This becomes your counsel.
Your tribe.

Not chosen by clout, wealth, or status.
Chosen by integrity, alignment, and unconditional respect.

We’re wired for community.
Evolutionarily and physiologically.

And when you can co-regulate in calm, laughter, peace, and shared purpose with your tribe…

That environment changes your brain.
And your life follows.

Each action you’re avoiding represents a part of yourself you’re not willing to face.

There’s usually a story underneath it.
A potential outcome that feels horrifying if it were true.

So it’s easier to leave it as a “maybe.”
A mystery.
A dream that never has to be tested.

Because once you try, something gets exposed.

You might fail.
You might succeed.
You might outgrow the version of yourself people are comfortable with.

That sounds dramatic.
But these are real subconscious paradigms.

I know because I’ve lived them. I had launched over 5 businesses in different fields and eventually had to turn back because I thought I just wasn’t cut out for entrepreneurship but I eventually understood a hard truth. I was only willing to do it if there wasn’t the potential for failure. But the irony is that the avoidance of failing made it a certainty.

It took years of work to see mine clearly.

You can’t fix what you can’t see.

So here’s one way to get closer to the truth.

Take your big dream.
For most of us, there’s one key step we keep postponing.
We create very convincing reasons:
“Not now.”
“Later.”
“It doesn’t make sense yet.”

But in your gut… you know.

That delay might be self-sabotage.

Try this:

Journal on what you think would happen if that step didn’t go as planned.
What would you feel?
Embarrassment?
Rejection?
Exposure?
Disappointment?

Name the deeper emotion tied to the task.

Then write from the perspective of yourself five years older.
Imagine explaining why you didn’t take the step.
What would that future version of you say back?

Psychologically, this works because creating distance from yourself reduces emotional defensiveness.
It allows you to observe your fear instead of being fused with it.
When you shift perspective, your brain moves from threat mode into problem-solving mode.

Clarity replaces avoidance.

And the full story of what it’s looked like to restart my life from the ground up.

Designing a life that makes eighty-year-old me say, “hell yeah.”
And eight-year-old me say, “I love this.”

You don’t realize how many decisions in your life are pre-made for you.

You’re given five options and told to choose.
School hands you approved majors.
Life offers college, trade school, or “don’t go,” but even that comes with judgment.

It feels like freedom.
But it’s curated freedom.

The wild part? True choice was always there.
It just doesn’t feel available when you don’t know any better.

That’s how it was for me.

Once you step outside the invisible rails, something else happens.

Choice becomes overwhelming.

When everything is possible, nothing feels clear.
Unlimited options create paralysis.

So you what you can do is create your own boundaries, with full autonomy.

Not restrictions.
Intentional constraints.

You decide what kind of life you’re building before life decides for you.

That means stripping away conditioning.
The “shoulds.”
The inherited definitions of success.
The image you think you need to maintain.

You come back to what actually feels true in your system.
What energizes you.
What feels aligned.

For me, it starts with values.

When you know what you truly prioritize, it becomes easier to design a vision.
One to five sentences describing the life you’re moving toward.

That becomes your North Star.

Now every major decision gets filtered through it.

Does this move me closer?
Or further away?

Suddenly the field narrows.

It’s like darts.
When you know where the bullseye is, your throws become intentional.

That’s navigation.

And I want to invite you into this next chapter with me.

I’ve got six months of runway to rebuild my life from the ground up, self-care, money, home, community, all of it. 

I’ll share it openly and use my life as the experiment.

The one thing that made starting over actually work for me

A 37-year long lesson about life explained in 30 seconds

I think a lot of our suffering comes from not knowing how to hold two truths at the same time.

You can be deeply grateful for the love in your life…
and still choose the way you prefer to be loved.

You can appreciate someone’s heart
and recognize that your souls are walking in different directions.

You can be thankful for a job that paid you well, built your skills, and supported your family…
and still know it was shrinking you.

You can live in a first world country with safety, opportunity, and comfort…
and still feel the pull to leave and experience something different.

Life is full of paradoxes.

I struggled with this.

When I was dating someone I cared about, I thought I had to choose one truth.
Either “I’m grateful for this” or “this isn’t right for me.”

When I worked my last job, I told myself,
“It’s stable. It’s respectable. Be thankful.”
As if gratitude meant I had to silence the voice that said,
“This isn’t aligned.”

Even living in comfort, I felt guilty wanting something more expansive.

But here’s the paradox I had to learn:

You can appreciate what you have
without making it permanent.

You can honor what something gave you
without forcing yourself to stay.

You can feel love
and still move.

You can say thank you
and goodbye.

You can be content
and still desire growth.

The mistake I kept making was thinking I had to deny one truth to validate the other.

And sometimes the cost of honoring only one truth is your integrity.
Or your growth.
Or your peace.

Gratitude doesn’t require stagnation.
And ambition doesn’t require resentment.

Maturity is being able to hold both.

To say,
“This has been beautiful.”
And also,
“It’s time.”

That’s the paradox.

And learning to live inside it changed my life.

Most people don’t fail at their vision because they’re incapable.

They stall because fear turns into procrastination, self-sabotage, and self-doubt. And that happens in two places:

Your mind.
And your nervous system.

Your thoughts create beliefs that stop you from moving forward.
Your body shifts into fight, flight, or freeze.

If you don’t know how to work with both, you stay stuck.

And I’m not saying this from theory.

It took me years of battling myself to learn what I’m distilling for you right now. I questioned my capabilities. I thought I was a failure who couldn’t accomplish things on my own. I came up with very convincing, very intelligent excuses for why “now wasn’t the time.”

What I’m sharing with you changed my life. That’s why I’m sharing it. Not to sound profound. But because I know how real this is.

For the mind, use “metacognition.”

Metacognition is the ability to observe your thoughts instead of automatically believing them. It’s thinking about your thinking. Instead of “I’m not ready,” it becomes, “I’m noticing a thought that says I’m not ready.”

That small shift creates distance. Research from cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based interventions shows that this kind of cognitive distancing reduces emotional reactivity and weakens negative thought patterns.

Observation creates choice.

For your nervous system, use box breathing, a technique used in military training.

Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds.
Hold for 4 seconds.
Exhale slowly for 4 seconds.
Hold again for 4 seconds.
Repeat for 2–5 minutes.

Slow, controlled breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system via the vagus nerve, lowering heart rate and reducing stress hormones. It signals safety to your body. When your body feels safe, your mind thinks clearly again.

Most of the time, you don’t need more motivation.

You need regulation.

The difference between a better life and a better world might be one regulated action away. Turn on the TV, look outside your window. We need more regulated and conscious people now more than ever.

Get your mind observing.
Get your body calm.
Then move. A life greater than yourself is waiting.
