I’m a huge fan of remote work.

I was in Chicago recently for a client event and got to spend time with several team members.
Three of them I had never met in person before.
One of them I’ve worked with for six years.

I was listening to an interview with Mike Vrabel, now the head coach of the New England Patriots, about culture and leadership.

What stood out wasn’t a slogan or a catchy quote.
It was how specific he was about responsibility.

Vrabel talked about building something players care about.
Something they’re proud of.
Something they want to protect.

And then he said the quiet part out loud:

“I gotta protect the team. That’s my job.” 

Not protect individuals from accountability.
Not protect comfort.
Protect the team.

He was clear that caring about players and holding them accountable aren’t opposites.
They’re connected.

Sometimes it means stepping in.
Sometimes it means being demanding.
Sometimes it means making decisions that aren’t fun, but are necessary.

That idea hit home for me as a founder.

I care deeply about every person on my team.
But my responsibility isn’t to any single individual.

It’s to the team as a whole.

If standards slip and you look the other way, you’re not being kind.
You’re failing the group.

Protecting the team is caring about people at scale.

That’s leadership.
