Why your bad (horrible) AI code looks brilliant 

There’s a growing myth in tech right now:

AI changes how we build software.

It doesn’t.

Coding best practices remain intact.
AI is simply a power multiplier.

In strong environments, that multiplier should be 10x-100x 
In mature agentic teams and agentic engineers, you can reach productivity where there is no limit on what can be built. 

But here’s what’s changed:

Human judgment now matters more than ever.

Modern AI systems are highly persuasive.
They produce confident output, even when wrong.

That means developers, architects, and technical leaders need a new form of confidence:

Not confidence in AI
Confidence in their ability to challenge AI

The strongest teams today are not those who rely on agents.

They are those who can override them.

And when you strip away the hype, everything still comes back to fundamentals.

The Same Foundations Still Win

Agentic engineering succeeds when it follows the same discipline that has always defined great software teams.

1. Correct Planning and Architecture

AI can generate code.

It cannot fix flawed intent.

If architecture is weak, agents simply accelerate failure.
Speed amplifies direction. It does not improve it.

Bad plan → faster bad system.

2. Clear, Unambiguous Specifications

Most AI errors are not model failures.

They are instruction failures.

Natural language was never designed for precision.
English carries assumptions, ambiguity, and interpretation.

That’s why I’ve been researching structured specification approaches like AISP (AI Symbolic Protocol). The goal is simple:

Remove ambiguity at source.

When intent becomes mathematically structured instead of linguistically implied, agent reliability improves dramatically.

3. Independent Testing (Never Let Agents Grade Their Own Work)

One of the most common failure patterns in AI-led development:

Agents generate code
Agents test code
Agents approve code

That loop collapses integrity.

Test Driven Development matters even more in agentic systems.

Separation of creation and validation is non-negotiable.

4. Iteration Over One-Shot Thinking

AI tempts teams into “first-pass success” thinking.

That’s dangerous.

Complex systems improve through iteration.

The best agentic environments automate iteration rather than chasing perfection in a single generation cycle.

The Reality

Agentic engineering isn’t a replacement for software discipline.

It is software discipline at scale.

The teams succeeding with AI today are not abandoning fundamentals.

They are doubling down on them.

Because in an era where machines can produce convincing answers instantly,
the true competitive edge is human clarity.
