Google recently published a breakdown by Jyll Saskin Gales, and it perfectly captures something many advertisers still overlook: 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻’𝘁 𝗿𝘂𝘀𝗵 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀.

Whether it’s 𝗔𝗜 𝗠𝗮𝘅 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵, 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝘅, or 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗲𝗻, the pattern is clear. Google’s automation doesn’t just respond to your settings, it learns from your signals over time.

You can tell Google what matters most through 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 and 𝗯𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆, but it still needs enough data and enough time to adapt.

And that’s where I’ll never understand some client-side thinking: 

👉 launching a 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗲𝗻 or 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝘅 for only few weeks 
👉 expecting it to perform immediately 
👉 then turning it off because it didn’t convert

That’s like planting a seed and checking for fruit the next morning.

Most Google Ads products, especially the AI-driven ones, are not designed for short flights. They work best as 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀-𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, continuously learning and compounding value from signals, audiences and creative variations.

AI Max Best Practices

Google is rolling out a redesign of its Search results page aimed at making navigation simpler and ad labeling clearer.

Text ads are now grouped under a single “𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀” label that stays visible while scrolling, ensuring users can easily distinguish ads from organic results. 

A new “𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀” control lets users collapse ads entirely with one click if they prefer to focus on organic listings.

The “Sponsored” label also extends to 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗱𝘀 (now shown as “Sponsored products”) and can appear above or below 𝗔𝗜 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀, depending on ad placement. 

According to Google, testing showed that the new layout improves clarity and navigation without changing ad sizes or counts, with a maximum of four text ads per group.

The update is currently rolling out worldwide across 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗸𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗲.

Google is rolling out 𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘰-𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘰 𝘢𝘥𝘴 for Demand Gen campaigns.

The new feature automatically transforms your image and text assets into videos in horizontal, square, and vertical formats.

The goal is to extend reach to YouTube and other Google surfaces without requiring any video production. Google AI selects templates, fonts, and music that align with your brand to create professional-looking videos at no cost.

For image ads created before 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟮𝟳, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱, the feature will be turned on automatically, and videos will start serving after 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟯𝟭, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱, unless you opt out.

𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗱 “𝗩𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀” 𝘁𝗼 “𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗲𝗩𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗩𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀”

Yesterday, while reviewing campaign reports, I noticed a small but meaningful change in Google Ads. The familiar “𝗩𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀” 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 “𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗲𝗩𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗩𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀”. 

This rename might look minor, but it actually improves clarity, especially for teams comparing performance across different platforms. The term 𝘛𝘳𝘶𝘦𝘝𝘪𝘦𝘸 highlights that this metric reflects 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, not just a passive impression.

So, what exactly counts as a 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗲𝗩𝗶𝗲𝘄?

It is recorded when someone chooses to 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁 with your video ad instead of skipping or scrolling past it. Depending on the format:

• 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻-𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗮𝗱𝘀: 30 seconds or until the end (whichever comes first), or a click on an element like a CTA or banner
  
• 𝗜𝗻-𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝗮𝗱𝘀: 10 seconds of watch time or a click that opens the video
  
• 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗱𝘀: 10 seconds or until the end, or a click on the CTA

If a user watches the full ad or engages with it, the view counts, and advertisers are charged on a 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗽𝗲𝗿-𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 (𝗖𝗣𝗩) basis in Video View campaigns.

This rebranding aligns better with how YouTube measures intent and helps stakeholders, analysts, and social media teams interpret video performance more consistently across platforms.

If your asset group is missing sitelinks, Google will now prompt you to add them to improve your Ad Strength.

A higher Ad Strength helps ensure a more diverse and relevant asset mix, which can support better matching to user intent. 

However, in my opinion, it remains largely a 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹. Several third-party case studies have shown that Ad Strength does 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 with key performance metrics such as conversions or CPA.
