Technically, ranking comes in the 5th stage of a 6-step process.

The 6-step process?
Discovery → Crawling → Rendering → Indexing → Ranking → Conversions

And here’s the truth nobody likes to admit:

Your SEO fails long before ranking fails.
- If Google can’t discover your pages, nothing happens.
- If it can’t crawl them, nothing loads.
- If it can’t render them (the step 90% of SEOs ignore), your JS-heavy pages become invisible.

If it can’t index them, they don’t exist.
Only then does ranking even become an option.

And after ranking?

Your SEO path gets smoother when you start in the right place.

When SEO works in your favor:

- Low-competition niche
- Aged, trusted domain
- Strong backlinks
- Existing branded searches
- High search demand

When SEO works against you:

- Heavy competition
- New, unproven domain

Most websites think visibility is about keywords.

It’s not.

It’s speed.

Here’s something most people miss 👇

A 499 error usually means the client closed the request before the server responded.

That means the server was too slow.

AI systems often fetch content in real time while generating answers.

If your Time to First Byte (TTFB) is slow or your server struggles under load, the AI may abandon the request and pull from a competitor instead.

You won’t see this inside ChatGPT.

You won’t get a warning in AI Overviews.

You’ll just… not get mentioned.

If you’re serious about GEO (Generative Engine Optimization):

- Improve server response time
- Use proper hosting (not the cheapest shared plan
- Monitor logs for 499 and timeout-related errors
- Keep TTFB consistently low

Speed is also a visibility gate now.

If AI can’t fetch you fast, it won’t cite you.

Take care of your site speed.

Your site might be losing traffic because of these 3 CWV (core web vitals)

→ LCP (Largest Contentful Paint)
Measures how fast your main content loads.

→ CLS  (Cumulative Layout Shift) 
Tracks how much your page jumps while loading.

→ CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift)
Measures how much your page moves while loading.

LCP =  2.5 seconds or faster.
FID = 100 milliseconds or less.
CLS =  0.1 or lower.

If it’s more than the ideal limit, then you’ll have a slow site. 

Slow site eats traffic and kills conversions. 
Your AI search also get effected. 

So, go check using PageSpeed or GTmetrix 
And solve if you have any issues.
