I’m the co-founder of utu - a new social enterprise on a mission to help save the planet. We’re building a ‘fitbit’ for climate change, an easy-to-use app that enables everyone to make lower-carbon lifestyle choices and see the real-world impact of those choices week by week. 

The app provides a wide range of practical and achievable actions that users can customize to create their individual ‘green pledges’. Based on these pledges, we can show a user his or her actual impact in reducing emissions, resource use and waste.

We can do this because of our unique ‘impacts database’, which collates and normalizes disparate scientific data and enables us express anything from a takeaway latte to a load of laundry in terms of kilograms of CO2e emissions, litres of water use and kilograms of waste. 

Utu is also about creating a community to raise awareness of the climate crisis and showing the power of collective action. Although the actions of individuals alone are not going solve the climate crisis, we believe that governments and corporations will only start to move at speed after society begins to demand change with a loud and unified voice. And we believe utu is a key part of that conversation
