Doctors have been dismissing severe pregnancy nausea as 'normal' for decades. A study of 437,000 Finnish women just proved why that's dangerous.

For context:
Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) isn't just bad "morning sickness". It's severe, persistent nausea and vomiting that can make eating and drinking impossible.

It affects up to 3.6% of pregnancies and is the leading cause of hospitalization in the 1st trimester.

The study showed that women with HG are more likely to experience depression before and after pregnancy.

More specifically, these women are :
- 5x more likely to have had depression before pregnancy.
- 3.5x more likely to develop postpartum depression.

What's fascinating is that the relationship between HG and depression may be bidirectional:

Women with prior depression are more likely to get HG. And women with HG are more likely to get postpartum depression.

This matters because we're still treating physical symptoms and mental health as separate problems. They're not.

What needs to change:
1- Systematic psychiatric screening during prenatal care, not just after symptoms become severe.
2- Training OB-GYNs to recognize the mental health red flags that predict HG risk.
3- Integrated care plans that treat the whole person, not isolated symptoms.

Because when we treat the whole person, not just isolated symptoms, outcomes improve for both mother and baby.

Meanwhile, the daily mental load of "Did I test at the right time? Is this data even accurate?" compounds the stress of an already difficult journey.

It's crazy that we've built smart tech to track nearly everything (our steps, sleep cycle, heart rate), but women's reproductive health monitoring has remained stubbornly invasive and manual.

Daily testing. Guesswork. Inconsistent data.

Inconsistent data means longer time-to-conception. More failed cycles. More money spent. More heartbreak.

Parnian Majd, Majd, a biomedical engineer, was tired of seeing women in her life struggle with fertility tracking.

So she founded @fibra to solve this. A way for women to track their fertility continuously, without the guesswork, and actually improve their chances of conceiving.

The innovation?

Smart underwear with embedded sensors that monitors your heart rate, temperature, vaginal pH, and discharge volume while you go about your day.

Slip it on, sync to your phone, and the data flows automatically.

Fibra raised $1.25M in an oversubscribed pre-seed round. The technology has captured over 4 million data points from pilot studies.

Users report less anxiety and more control over their cycles. In 2024, Fibra was named Canada's Best Reproductive Health Monitoring Technology.

Fertility tracking should be as seamless as tracking your steps. Fibra proves it can be.

Light therapy quietly revolutionized dentistry by killing bacteria without drugs. Now it's coming for women's health.

For context:
3 in 4 women will experience a vaginal yeast infection. 
40-45% face recurrent episodes.

The standard of care is antibiotics, except that antibiotics
- destroy your microbiome
- are becoming less effective due to antibacterial resistance and
- contributes to said antibacterial resistance

Current pharmacological treatments aren't a cure but a temporary patch (till the infection comes again).

Ella Smoraczewska Harris learned this the hard way. After giving birth, she experienced severe yeast infections, which turned what should have been a relaxing babymoon in France into a scavenger hunt for pharmacies that carried antifungal medications. She thought: there has to be a better way!

So together with Sonal Pendharkar Kulkarni (Ph.D.), they co-founded UVISA Health.

Their device is elegantly simple: 
a small, reusable tool women use at home that delivers calibrated light therapy to the area. It targets harmful yeast and bacteria while preserving beneficial microbes. No pills. No prescriptions. No microbiome destruction.

In May 2025, Denmark's medicines agency approved Uvisa's first clinical trial with Odense University Hospital, a milestone that validates years of pre-clinical work.

If this scales, women will finally be able to manage infections with dignity at home and reduce the contribution to antibiotic-resistant superbugs.

Uvisa already has a waitlist ahead of launch.

The question isn't whether we need alternatives to antibiotics. It's why it took this long to build them.

Companies spend millions on wellness programs, meditation apps, mental health days. But women are still leaving corporate at record rates. Why?

The problem isn't (only) the benefits package.

It's that most workplace health policies were centered and built around men.

Here’s what that looks like in real life:

• Your health insurance covers Viagra… but makes women fight for endometriosis treatment.
• Your PTO policy assumes everybody recovers from surgery at the same speed. (They don’t.)
• Your performance reviews penalize “brain fog” or “fatigue” without asking what’s causing it.

Women are typically diagnosed later than men for the same symptoms.
- Cancer? 2 - 5 years later than men. 
- Endometriosis takes 7-9 years on average. 

During that time, she's working through pain, pushing through exhaustion, pretending she's fine.

Until she's not. And then she leaves.

If companies want to retain high-performing women, they need to do 3 things differently:

1. Treat women's health as a business priority, not a nice-to-have.
2. Build policies around real medical needs, not hypothetical ones.
3. Create space for women to be honest about their health challenges without being penalized.

Retention isn't just about adding more perks; it's also about removing the barriers that make staying unsustainable.

We track our sleep, glucose, steps, you name it! But the one thing that affects half the world's population? We're still guessing.
Maybe it wasn't "sexy" enough for investors. 

Or maybe (and this feels closer to the truth) the wearables industry was built by men, for men, and women became the target only once the profit potential was clear.

So here we are. 

Women with heavy bleeding wondering if their pain is normal or a sign of fibroids. 

Women with unusual discharge, unsure if they're at risk for preterm labor. 
 
Women with endometriosis waiting an average of 6.6 years for a diagnosis not because the condition is rare (it affects 1 in 10 women), but because there's been no way to objectively measure what's happening.

That was before Emm.

During COVID, founder Jenny Button wore an Oura ring and a Whoop band, getting detailed insights into her sleep and fitness. Then it hit her: why is there nothing like this for menstrual and reproductive health?

Many founders building thought leadership think viral content and audience growth are the goals.

I won't lie, those are great metrics. Certainly feeds the ego.

But viral content is different from lead generation content

PS- By lead, I mean investors, partners, or customers - whomever you're trying to attract to help you reach your goal.

Viral content gets attention.
It's broad, relatable, and emotional. People share it because it makes them look smart, funny or understood.

Think: hot takes on hiring, good boss vs. bad boss threads, remote work debates, career mistakes.
The algorithm loves it.

But here's the problem: You can go viral talking about startup burnout while no one knows you're solving postpartum depression at scale. 
Visibility without context doesn't build credibility.

Lead gen content drives action.
It's narrow, specific, and speaks directly to a pain point your ideal audience is facing right now. It tends to be very niche and educational.

Example: A founder shares what she learned from a failed partnership pitch. Three potential partners DM her.

That's the difference.

Now you don't have to choose one or the other. A smart content strategy incorporates both, but in different proportions.

For founders and executives in women's health, that balance matters even more. Your expertise deserves more than likes. It deserves to be in front of the people who actually get what you're building.

The "posted on LinkedIn" search filter is useful. But it only shows one type of active user: content creators.

What about the 99% of LinkedIn users who engage without posting?

The people who:

• Send/respond to DMs

There's no way to find them.

"Just build what you need" is terrible advice for femtech founders.

Someone pitched me their women's health app idea last week.
My first question: "Have you looked at the Femtech market maps?"

I've noticed that aspiring founders often want to build solutions to their own problems.

And it makes sense: if you have a problem in women's health, thousands of other women probably share it. 

But we mistake shared pain for market validation. We don't realize dozens of teams are building the exact same thing.

I now send every founder the same resource when I hear about their idea: 
The Femtech market maps by Femovate.

Before you invest months building, do this:

Pull up market maps. Find where your idea sits on the continuum of care. 
If the space is saturated, you have three choices:

1) Pivot to a less crowded space
2) Accept you'll need 10x better execution to win
3) Find an underserved adjacent need

Either way, you're making decisions based on data, not hope.

🌅 The Menstrual Health Market Map is ready 🌅 
Over 100 million women track their cycles on apps. They log menstrual patterns, pain levels, mood shifts, sleep, energy, and every symptom that gets brushed off in the exam room. 

And still, most of that data hasn't made its way into clinical care. It sits in silos. It doesn't trigger screening. It doesn't support early diagnosis. A woman can walk in with three years of documented pain and her doctor will scroll a few screenshots and say, “Periods can be rough."

We also have real economic costs. In the Netherlands alone, menstrual symptoms cost an estimated 1.9 billion euros each year. Most of that is presenteeism, not absence. Women keep working through pain because they’re told it’s normal.

But...Cycle tracking has hit a ceiling. The category is saturated. The opportunity has shifted. It’s not in another period tracker. It’s in the infrastructure that connects awareness to actual care.

How do we turn years of symptom tracking into early diagnosis? How do we connect tracking to screening and evidence based treatment? How do we move from self knowledge to real care pathways?

That is where the next wave of innovation will happen.

I've struggled with writing this post for the last 72 hours. It's going to be heavy. Not sure if it belongs on LinkedIn, but this is the only platform I have. And I was granted permission to share G.'s story, so here we go:

My neighbour's boy went to sleep last week after 2 long years fighting this monster called leukemia. 

We became neighbours by accident in Jan 2024. We lived in the one place no one wants to live: the 7th floor of the Montreal Children's Hospital.

You might imagine a place like that is dark or scary. But the 7th floor is the closest I've ever felt to heaven on earth. The nurses, the doctors, the PABs - the way they cared for our families is just unmatched.

It is a specific kind of hell to watch your child fight a monster you cannot see. You listen to the beeping machines. You pray for good numbers. You watch them smile through things that would break a grown man.

And amidst all that, G. was a light to everyone that met him.

I vividly remember the day we were finally being discharged. We were packing up, desperate to get home. G.'s dad actually stopped us in the hallway. Why? He just wanted to make sure my daughter, Au., got her little gift - a blue Schtroumpf from G.'s favourite collection.

He absorbed all the love around him and poured it into ink. He wrote a book to inspire other kids and parents.

It's called Les mystérieux toutous (The Mysterious Plushies).

It was featured in the Montreal Bookfair last Saturday. G. was planning to be there to sign copies, but decided to rest up early, leaving us just two days before the event. We met his dad at the fair last Saturday and asked for permission to share his story.

And this is where you come in.

I don't want sympathy. I want to clear the inventory.

The goal was to print and sell 5,500 books. We are currently at 2,700.

The book is $25 CAD. It's a delightful story and a beautiful testimony to his strength and sense of humor. Every penny of profit goes to the Montreal Children's Foundation and Leucan. All of it.
