I’m Falan Blake a nursing student and CNA with a vision to bridge psychiatry, neurology, and nursing research. My journey into healthcare is deeply personal. I’ve lost loved ones to stroke and heart disease, and my child lives with a serious mental illness that changed the course of our lives. 

What drives me is the question why…why the brain and body respond the way they do, and how we can move beyond treating symptoms to addressing root causes.

My focus is pediatric neurology and mental health nursing, with long-term plans to pursue a dual PHD/DNP and position myself as a nurse scientist. I believe nursing can play a greater role in reshaping how we understand brain health from advocating for advanced imaging in psychiatric care to exploring new pathways for trauma-informed recovery.

This isn’t just a career shift; it’s a lifelong mission. My platform will document my academic journey, share insights at the intersection of psychiatry and neurology, and build awareness for research-based nursing care.

Falan Blake

Last year was our first Thanksgiving together as adults. I cooked the “traditional” way at first.

We grew up in New York City. His family leans more Latin/Irish in their holiday food traditions, and mine leans more African American. But I never actually spent Thanksgiving with the Latin side of my dad’s family, so our foods were always different anyway.

I went on to become a chef, and by the time I had my own home, I was done with typical Thanksgiving food. Working in restaurants and casinos meant spending the entire week cooking hundreds of turkeys. By the time the holiday arrived, the last thing I wanted was more turkey.

So we decided to create our own version of the day. A blended, non-traditional dinner built around foods we actually love.

I don’t cook professionally anymore, but I still cook for friends and family when they’re nearby. This year, my neighbor already requested his own skillet of southern cornbread. My daughter wants pot roast. And Kevin will eat whatever I put on the table.

As for me, I want crab legs. But honestly, that’s every day for me.

I ✅ Did it. I finished my first college class — English 101 — with an A.

I’ve always been a strong writer, but editing…that’s another story. Structural editing has never been my strength and that’s okay!

Huge thanks to Marie S., who red-marked my drafts to death and listened to me spiral for an entire semester, and to Kevin, my other half, who slept maybe five hours over two days helping me fact-check and research my 12-page Partisan Essay.

Let’s just say, as a criminal defense lawyer, he found the topic far more exciting than I did and I still don’t fully understand what I wrote. 😭🤣😭🤣🤷🏻‍♀️

If it weren’t for the two of them, that A would’ve looked a lot more like a C.

We all have our strengths. Mine isn’t editing or political commentary and that’s perfectly fine.

Whew!
