My truth about writing for attention.

There's something more sticky that needs to take hold first.

Learning to create and write for retention.

What if the real goal on LinkedIn isn’t going viral, but being unforgettable?

Most posts get attention for 24 hours, then vanish.

But if you're playing the long game, book sales, clients, and credibility then attention isn’t enough.

You need affection. 

You need retention.

Because followers don’t build careers, fans do.

Fans of your work come back.

They binge your backlog.

They quote you in rooms you're not in.

They send your posts around with “you gotta read this.”

So how do you write for retention?

Say what others won’t.

Write like you’re talking to one person.

Make them feel something real.

Give them a reason to remember you.

Stop trying to hack the algorithm. 

Write to get into someone’s memory.

I’m not great at this by any means. It takes time, and it's okay to practice as I write my next thing.

Self-promotion is a huge problem for experts and authors.
 
They’re struggling with being seen.

They tell themselves they’re “not ready yet,” or they don’t want to look like they’re begging for attention. 

And that fear turns into silence. 

The silence turns into missed opportunities. 

And suddenly the book they spent years on is sitting in a corner collecting digital dust.

Here’s the part most people avoid saying.

Showing up isn’t desperation.

Showing up is proof you believe in the work you created.

If you’re scared to talk about your book, if you hesitate every time you want to post, or if you keep waiting to feel “legit” before you share your ideas, just know this, no one is coming to tap you on the shoulder and give you permission.

Credibility comes from repetition.

Authority comes from clarity.

Traction comes from visibility.

You don’t earn those by hiding.

So if the fear is there, fine. Let it ride shotgun. But stop letting it drive.

The word came from an SNL skit.
Said by a different W...Will Ferrell.

What's funny is that after the skit came out, even Pres. Bush thought he must have said "strategery" at some point.

Until SNL producer Lorne Michaels admitted their writers coined the term.

So if you're using a quote in:
- A book
- A blog
- An article
- A coffee mug
- A freakin' t-shirt

...you better crosscheck it.
You better source and cite it.

I told my wife to go see “Wicked: For Good” by herself.
[And she was stoked about it.]

My wife works on Saturdays, 10 to 5.
Kids hang with me.
I call it “Dadurday.”
[and outings are Dadventures.]

But this Saturday, I told her to stay out longer than usual.

“Go watch Wicked. Grab a marg.”

She doesn’t get to do much by herself.
Which is tough for an introvert.

And sometimes it’s the little things.
Like a movie alone.
Not worried about the kids.
Or errands.
Or chores.

No lesson here.
Just what I felt like writing.

Stephen King says “the road to hell is paved with adverbs.”
But these 3 writing mistakes are worse:

1. Every day vs. everyday
-“I stub my toe every day.”
-“Stubbing my toe is an everyday occurrence.”

2. Led vs. lead
-“She led the way forward.”
-“She died from lead poisoning.”

3. Anymore vs. any more
-“I’m not hungry anymore.”
-“I don’t want to eat any more turkey.”

All three of these cause me to gnash my teeth.

If you have to argue that your writing is good, then your writing isn't good.

We celebrated our 15th anniversary during my recent NYC trip.
[but we almost didn’t make 7 years]

In 2010, we were two doe-eyed twenty-somethings honeymooning in the Big Apple.

From 2014 to 2016, a series of fear-based decisions and a failure to address my anxiety/depression drove us to the brink.

I came close to ending my life.
She came close to leaving.
We nearly lost everything.

9 years later, we’re still recovering.
But now we plan for the future instead of living in the coulda, shoulda, woulda.

I attend an anxiety/depression group nearly every week.

I no longer give fear the deciding vote.

For years, we’ve longed to get back to NYC.
But money, time, or stress stood in the way.

This trip was healing.
We felt like 20-year-olds again.
[well, mostly…]

And we can’t wait to get back and bring the kids.

Short answer: Dole Whip.

Longer answer:

Our first family trip to Disney World was in 2015.
Tomorrow will mark our 8th time.

+1 Disney cruise [with another one on the way].

That's a lot.

We go because we made a choice:
Experience > Things.

-We have a builder grade house.
-One of our cars is a 2004 Honda Pilot.
-We don't wear expensive clothes.

The memories and stories we make there outweigh the price tag.

[Bonus: Disney stories are a great ice breaker with ghostwriting prospects.]

Look, you don't have to love Disney.
But find those experiences you value over things.

And enjoy them with the people you love.

Because stories aren't meant to be read.
They're meant to be lived.

How NOT to use LinkedIn DMs:

Received a pitch slap last week.
Showcased their work.

But it was nothing I need or want.
So I let them know.

…and then they replied with what I can only assume is a guilt ploy.

If you’re going to pitch slap…
…don’t do this.

We’re all looking for our next deal.
But you also have to accept “no.”
With grace. Not guilt.

But hey, I’m open to feedback.
So AITA?

Usually, I ignore the AI email marketers.
Today, I told one he was creepy.

I don't believe for one moment that you were thinking of me so much while ordering your coffee that you told the barista my name instead of yours.

And if that's true...

Then that's weird.
Not a good weird.

A creepy weird.

So yes, you got a response.
But probably not the one you wanted.

"Sinners" is a horror-musical set in Jim Crow South.
And it made $367,697,567.

When Warner Bros. expressed interest in Ryan Coogler's script, he had only one condition:

"No notes. No studio interference. The artists get to be in charge."

Bold move.

25 years ago, he would've been laughed out of the room.

Today?

The rules have changed.

You won't stand out following the "template" in your industry.

That's why I now ask prospects,
"But how is your project different?
What are you saying no one else has said yet?"

Well, you heard me...
What are you saying that no one else has said yet?

3 stupid questions that will make a book get results:

1. Who am I writing for?
2. What do they want to achieve?
3. What are the secrets I know that they don’t know?

Stupid because these should be no-brainers.

But you’d be surprised how often these are overlooked or left way too vague.

Books are for readers.
Not for authors.

Great writing only has 2 rules:
[and they both apply to "brain rot" reality TV]

1. Don't be boring.
2. Make it easy to consume.

That's it.

My wife loves "brain rot" shows:

- "The Bachelor/Bachelorette"
- "Keeping Up with the Kardashians"
- "The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives"

Not because she thinks they're great TV.
And not because she's dumb.
[she's pretty freakin' smart]

But because she gets to:

- be entertained
- shut off her busy brain

If you want engaging content, start here:
- pretend you're writing for an 8th grader(age 13)
- worry less what others think

All other writing "rules"?
Totally subjective and worth bending.

In 2003, I played a juror in “12 Angry Men.”
Last week, I was one in real life.

Last Monday, I reported for jury duty.

I’ve only been summoned 3 times.
[One time I showed up at the wrong courthouse. Oops.]

But this was the first time I was chosen.

7 observations:

1. The people with BS excuses wouldn’t make good jurors anyway.

2. Lots of people are having a much worse day than you.

3. Government buildings are just as efficient as you assume. 
[broken escalator, I got trapped in a stairwell, and bathrooms were out of service one day]

4. Our bailiff literally felt like a movie character.
[Direct quote: “After I retire, I’m gonna live to 150 so I can get every penny out of the county for my pension.”]

5. Sitting in court all day listening to lawyers leaves your brain utterly frazzled and useless by 5 pm.

6. Your heart and your brain can want different things.

7. Life is messy.

Even though it totally derailed my week and put me behind on everything…

…I’m glad I was chosen.

It gave me a new appreciation for our justice system.

As imperfect as it is, it’s still better here than most places.

Imposter Syndrome is good for you.

In 1989, R&B duo Milli Vanilli released their debut album.

They sold 7 million albums in the US.
Won Best New Artist at the Grammys.

But in 1990, members Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan were revealed as frauds.

A track skipped during a live concert.
Revealing the duo was lip-syncing all along.

They panicked and ran offstage.
They were mocked in the press.
Their Grammy was revoked.

Performers, yes.
But not the way people thought.

See, real imposters don't experience Imposter Syndrome.

So if you do...
Good.

You're not an imposter.

I spent 336 hours writing my own book last year.
Messages like this remind me why:

"I bought your book [a] few days back and just finished it...
As someone trying to refine my skills, this book has been a solid guidepost."

And in a follow up message:

"Your book came to me at the right time. I know I'll keep going back to it. It's almost a year since I started ghostwriting, and by God's grace, the journey has been really meaningful."

I ignored all the LinkedIn “Rules” for 8 days…
Here’s what happened:

We surprised our boys with an early Christmas gift.

One week at Disney World during our favorite season.

And this time, I didn’t stress out over LinkedIn’s almighty algorithm.

-I didn’t make a single post.
[though I drafted some ideas on the flight home]

-I didn’t do any outreach
[to be fair, I don’t do much anyway]

-I didn’t leave 100 comments a day
[maybe 10 in a whole week]

-I didn’t engage during “Golden Hour”
[no post, no engagement]

The results?

My impressions tanked.
My engagement was non-existent.
The LinkedIn universe didn’t even blink at my absence.

But you know what didn’t tank?

My time with my family.

This is the first time in 3 years I’ve not done any posting/commenting while on vacation.

And it was nice to largely forget about this place.

Yes, I still popped in a few times to make sure there were no truly earth-shattering messages and to leave a couple comments while waiting in lines.

But it was nice to un-Link for 99% of my time.

Here's the frustrating part of content creation:
[especially on LinkedIn]

You can have a silly post pop off 100K+ one day...
And then an education-rich post get 200 the next.

Oh, and know how much business that big spike earned?

$0.00.

Yet I've had decidedly "mid" posts that:
-Led to book sales
-Led to a 1:1 consulting call
-Led to a full-fledged ghostwriting contract

And that's why you need balance:
-Big impressions for visibility.
-Medium for authority.
-Small for money.

Same with books:
-A great title and tagline that gets you visibility.
-Content-rich chapters for authority.
-Short CTAs that convert.

That's why every book outline I work on now includes "marketing angles" to helps us balance all three.

LinkedInfluencers will tell you that’s the power of:

-Consistency
-Perseverance
-Nicheing down

But Godzilla’s real secret to success is giving zero damns what people think about him.

Imagine what you could do if you worried less what people think about you.

Some people hate trends. [hi]
Some people love them. [i see you]

And sometimes...
If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

I'll take 6-7 any day of the week over your AI-generated pseudo-inspirational quote superimposed on the side of a building.

I don't talk about this much...
But I dabble in graphic design.

Not for pay, mind you.
[NO one should be paying me to design anything for them...]

But for the mental escape.
As a pure hobby.

To shut off the writer's brain for a moment.
And just think about color and shape.

We're surprising our kids with a Disney trip as their Christmas gift.
[After repeatedly white-lying to them about it...]

And since my brain needed a break from wording... 
I mocked up some shirts for myself.
I don't hate them.
