So is Harry an author or not?


Prince Harry's ghostwriter was J.R. Moehringer.

Sabrina Carpenter's music is bubble gum smut.
But there's a story in her evolution:


My son started watching the Disney channel show "Girl Meets World."

[only after finishing the glory of "Boy Meets World."]

The Sabrina Carpenter in the show...
...is a far cry from her persona now.

Some have accused her of using "Lolita imagery."
[a phrase as evocative as it is provocative.]

Sabrina's response:

"It's not my fault I got a job at 12 and you won't let me evolve."

I read that and said,
"Well, sh!t, she's right."

When some people look at you,
they'll always see what you were.
Not what you are.

Some people still see me as the weirdo minister's kid.
Others see the social worker who quit.
Or the Uber-driving SaaS sales guy.

I'll never be Sabrina's target market.
But I'm not going to judge how she's evolved.
[well, not anymore.]

We all evolve.
Our stories are allowed to add new chapters.
Even bubble gum smutty ones.

10 years ago, I spent 2 hours in Brussels.
While traveling home from Sierra Leone.


I’d gone to SL for a mission trip.

On the way home, we had a 7-hour layover in Brussels.

The rest of the team decided to stay in the airport.

I thought, “When else would I ever go to Brussels?”

So I decided to go into the city.

The lady checking my passport was skeptical.

“Are you certain you want to do this? You have a flight later.”

“Yeah, I know.”

She stamped my passport.
Probably thinking “dumb American.”

Took the train into the city. [20 min.]
Walked around for a bit. [65 min.]
Bought my wife some chocolates. [15 min.]
Rode the train back to the airport. [20 min.]

Some might think 2 hours is a total waste.
That it was too risky.

But I don’t regret the decision one bit.

Life is short.

Got to enjoy it while you can.

Anyone can start. Only 3% finish.

Or an unfinished manuscript.

Starting is the sexy part.
You take your idea out for dinner.
Share some drinks.
And...see what happens.

The book is still "perfect" in your mind.

Anyone can start a book.

Only 3% who start writing a novel will finish.
[nonfiction is probably the same.]

The icebergs standing in your way:
-Perfectionism [fixable]
-Discipline [fixable]
-Guidance [fixable]

Instead of "just start writing," do this:

1. List out the 10 FAQs you get.
2. List out the 5 questions you wish people would ask.
3. Look up other 5 books on your topic.
4. Read the 3-star reviews.
5. What do the reviewers wish had been covered in the book?
6. Add those gaps to your list above.
7. Have a book coach help you turn that list into an outline that includes your strong takes, catchphrases, and marketing angles.

Anyone can start.
Few finish.

Everyone's talking about what Ilia Malinin did wrong.
No one's talking about what Mikhail Shaidorov did right.


Last Friday, the quad god Ilia Malinin "blew it" in men's figure skaing.
[his words, not mine.]

Commentators had used language like "the gold is his to lose."
[um, jinx much?]

Afterwards, everyone talked about what Ilia did wrong.
Few talked about Shaidorov's performance.

Mikhail was in 5th place after the short program.
[part 1 of the competition, for my non-figure skating friends out there.]

No one was talking about his podium chances.

Then it was time for Part 2...the free skate.

He delivered a flawless performance.
And completed a combination that had never been done before.

Watching him, I thought: 
"Any other Olympics, this would be a gold medal."

He skyrocketed to 1st place.
And then all the others "ahead" of him fell.
And fell.
And fell some more.

Everyone loves a good underdog story.
But Mikhail is more than an underdog.

He focused on what mattered:
"Give people a great performance."

When everyone else was thinking:
"I need to win."

You want a bestseller?
You want an award-winning book?
You want a book that gives you authority?
That brings you clients and scales your business?

Focus on story first.
Focus on the performance.

Tough to get results without it.

So I asked my wife:

"Would it be alright if I spent the weekend before my birthday somewhere else, just writing?"

She said, "Sure."

So Austin it is.

AirBNB, check.
Uber to the airport, check.
TSA PreCheck...check. [hopefully.]

I'm staying in the heart of the city.
Give me your food recs.

Writing rules for LinkedIn:


-Short sentences only.
-But not too many because people will think it's AI.
-The hook is everything.
-The visual is everything.
-The CTA is everything.
-Stay away from politics and religion.
-Political and religious posts get you tons of impressions.
-Always end with a CTA.
-The algorithm will punish your CTA post.
-Never use links in your post.
-Use links in your post if you want to drive traffic.
-Send 1,000 DMs a day.
-Never pitch slap.
-Make sure you're the first comment on the influencer's post every day.
-Never use adverbs.
-Never use em dashes.
-Use all the adverbs and em dashes.
-Be authentic.
-Do whatever it takes to get impressions.

Glad we could get that all sorted.
Back to business, folks.

One word converts more of my prospects than any other:
[fellow freelance writers, pay attention]


In 2023, my close rate dropped to 18%.
When I started using this word in 2024, it rose to 80%.
[yes, I did the actual math.]

The one word wasn't:
-sales
-authority
-synergy
[good lord, definitely not "synergy"]

The one word is "storytelling."

That's it.

Because that's the biggest fear a prospect has:

"Does my story have value?"

Many of my clients have told me that's why they picked me.

Caveat:
It's not enough to say, "I love stories" in your pitch.

Anyone can say that.

But can you SHOW prospects that you know the craft of storytelling?

Do you use stories in your Zoom pitch?
Do you use stories in your LinkedIn posts?
Do you use stats to tell stories? (i.e. results, accolades, etc.)

Give it a try in your next prospect call.

The best advice my mom ever gave me:
"Don't play notes. Make music."


I was a certified band nerd.
Second chair trumpet.

Forget first chair.
That's when you have to play solos.

But I was expected to compete in UIL Solo & Ensemble every year.

Ensemble, piece of cake.
You've got your buddies there.

Playing solo?
Terrifying.

My mom was always my accompaniment, though.
[she's an excellent pianist.]

One year, I was really nervous before going in to face the judges.

Anxious I'd miss a note.
And then more notes.
And then the world would explode like Alderaan.

"Don't play notes," she said.
"Make music."

Suddenly, I wasn't as nervous.
Because there's a huge difference between playing notes and making music.

You can miss some notes and still make music.

AI knows how to play notes.
It doesn't know how to make music.

Only humans can.

In 2009, I accidentally broke a pact between two sisters...
All over an engagement ring.


Christa and I started dating in summer of 2009.
By fall, I knew she was my person.

So I reached out to Grace, one of her best friends who was living in Italy.

"Will you help me pick out a ring for Christa?"

Grace was stoked.
I sent her a few designs.
We narrowed it down to one.

I went to the jeweler.
They were out of stock.

"But we can custom make one just like it."
Sweet. Even better.
Downpayment paid.

Early December,  the ring was ready.
I went to pick it up.
Paid the balance.
Heart pounding.

Now I just had to figure out when to pop the question.

Literally that night, we went on a date.
One of her friends had just gotten engaged.
She drops a "subtle" hint:

"Whenever it's my turn, I want the ring to be a surprise."

Sweet. I'm on track.

"And I want my sister to help pick it out."

[Record scratch.]
Wait. What?

"We made a pact as teenagers to pick each others' rings.
My brother-in-law took me with him to help him pick out her ring."

Oops.

"Oh, cool," I said, trying to act casual.
But panicking.
Crap! Crappity-crap-crap.

In early January, I got "the blessing" from her parents.
But I was almost more nervous about having to approach her sister.

I called Lacey to confess:

"Hey, I already bought a ring.
I didn't know about the pact y'all had..."

She was disappointed.
But I had a counter offer.

"What if you help me with the proposal...?"

She agreed.

It wasn't "the plan," but it worked out beautifully.
Lacey helped me pull off the proposal better than I could have imagined.

Sometimes the plan has to change...
...especially when you didn't know there was  a plan.

That doesn't mean you can't still make something beautiful happen.

Last week, I cost myself $13,750.
One email would have saved me.


Recently, I was approached by a prospect. 
They were already under contract with a publisher.
But they asked me for a proposal to work together.

Since I know people at the publisher, I should have reached out to them first to say, "Hey, what's your process for this situation?"

Did I do that?
Nah.

Sometimes I err too far on the "ask for forgiveness, not permission" side of business.

So I put together my quote.
The prospect was super-receptive.
Then we reached out to the publisher to get their input.

Turns out they have a whole process for incorporating contractor fees for existing contracts.

Oops.

Rookie mistake on my part.
Something I should've known.

Which meant that I had to reduce my fee by $13,750.
Talk about a "phantom tax..."

I could have walked away.
But I accepted the reduction because:

[a] I really like the client and I'm in a phase where liking my clients is often more important than $$$.

[b] The oversight was totally my fault, and I'm a big believer in  doing what's necessary to correct my mistakes.

Communication = $$$

True in marketing.
True in contracts.
True in customer relations.
True in staying out of trouble with my wife.

One email would have put that $13,750 back in my pocket.
[heck, that's a Disney trip right there.]

Lesson learned.
Still stings a little.
So you can bet I won't be making this mistake again.

I'm bad at sending invoices.
[though I've improved because I gotta pay them money bills.]

I'm bad at tracking leads.
[my CRM runs on vibes.]

I'm really bad at prospect outreach.
[i still have cold calling trauma from SaaS sales.]

I'm bad at working when I'm "off the clock."
[wait, what clock?]

And yet, in 2025 I made 2.7x the most I ever made in my last W2 job.

If everything you share is about a win,
then you've got a relatability problem.


Here are some losses I don't discuss enough:
-2014: Sold our first business for about 35% of its true value.
-2016: My outside sales business tanked my finances + life.
-2017: Spent months and $1K developing an app but had to shut it down after only 3 months.
-2020: The movie I was hired to write got canceled.
-2021: My first big ghostwriting contract decided to go on hiatus and never published.
-2025: My group book coaching program totally tanked.

Talking about wins is super fun.

But if no one can relate to you, your stories/knowledge won’t land.

Share more losses.
It's good for the heart.
And good for humanity.
