Tools that help people do their jobs…

And long walks in nature.

Is L&D a constant source of organizational frustration and confusion?

One reason for the frustration: way too many cooks in the kitchen. Too many stakeholders (usually cross-functional leaders) outside the function overengineering it. Misalignment around L&D’s core porpuse.

It doesn’t have to be so complex. Or emotional. 

It’s actually pretty straightforward. 

Here is a basic outline of what works if an org is starting (or restarting or upgrading) a learning function:
-Assemble a learning team you trust.
-Give them access and time to review research, data and information they need to create a thoughtful learning strategy. 
-Get aligned on the strategy. 
-Support the team as they roll out that stategy. 
-Hold the team accountable to the strategy. Touch base on the agreed upon metrics and measurable KPIs.
-Give constructive feedback as needed. 
-Adjust the plan as needed.
-I repeat…Support the team. 

Things that get in the way:
-Ego
-Design & decision by committee
-Lack of trust or curiousity 
-Murky, wishy washy KPIs based on arbitrary things like feelings (aka “leaders need to feel like L&D supports them”)

🤔 Learning folks: anything you’d add? 🤔

As Tim Slade recently posted, it’s not just about knowing learning methodology like Gagne’s 9 Events of Instruction, learning professionals need to understand the human element of collaborating with stakeholders, pushing back when needed, managing expectations, providing clarity, etc. 

And that’s easier said than done, especially when there are power dynamics in play.

Organizations can keep posting and reposting jobs and wasting candidates’ time looking for a magical unicorn to solve their “L&D problem,” but without collaboration, trust and curiosity, you’re setting that person up for failure. 

Orgs: If you don’t know what you want, fair. But you don’t have pretend you do. Ask a learning strategist (like Everybody, Be Cool!) And really listen.
