Last month, I caught myself doing something I coach other leaders not to do:

I avoided a tough conversation; smiled through discomfort.

Told myself, 'it’ll sort itself out'

Classic Green leadership:
Empathetic, supportive, and afraid to shake harmony.

And that’s when it hit me:
I wasn’t protecting my team’s peace.
I was protecting my own comfort.

Because that’s the thing about leadership 
Your strength, when overused, quietly becomes your blind spot.

I’ve always led from Green: calm, approachable, emotionally available.
It’s what makes people feel safe with me.

But the flip side?
I delay hard conversations in the name of empathy.
I hold space when I should hold accountability.

So, I borrowed a little Red: the courage to be direct, even when it’s uncomfortable, and the clarity to call out what needed to change.

And it worked.

Because I finally gave my team what they needed, not what I was comfortable giving.

Since then, I’ve started noticing other colors in the leaders I coach.

Who lead with fire, until that fire burns everyone out.

📍2023, Train the Trainer program
I was supposed to present a module
Sounds simple, right? 
But not for me

It was my first time presenting. My confidence was already broken from personal struggles. And the minute I stood up, I froze.

→ Went blank when questioned
→ I couldn't explain the concept
→ Gave wrong answers out of pure panic

I failed the test.

Sach main, that room felt like a courtroom. 
And I was guilty of not being good enough.

I walked out thinking, ‘Maybe training is not for me’

But then I remembered something.

This wasn't my first failure.

Engineering? 

Failed 4 subjects in the first two years. 

Cleared them all eventually.

✅So I did what I knew how to do: 
 
I prepared like my career depended on it.

And a couple of months later, I passed.

That failure taught me more than the certification ever could:

→ Confidence comes from preparation, not pretending
→ Clients will hijack your session with tough questions 
→ If you nail the concept clarity, you’ll survive 
→ Failure isn't the end, giving up is

That day, I learned something trainers don't talk about enough:

You'll bomb, blank out, and even feel like a fraud

But if you prepare, persist, and stay humble,

You'll come back stronger.

Here’s the breakdown:

Freshers: 21% prepared

Now, let’s talk about where does the problem lies:

We’ve normalized learning interview skills through failure.

Freshers burn opportunities figuring out what experienced professionals already know.

We call it ‘gaining experience’
I call it a ‘broken system’

Because we treat interview skills like something you absorb through rejection,

As if you’ll magically get better at articulating your value after enough failed attempts.

To be clear:
That’s not skill development but survival of those who can afford to fail.

The professionals who succeed aren’t always the most talented.

They’re the ones with:

“I still prefer in-person training.” 

Cool, but can your model scale without burning cash or carbon?

The best training I ever delivered?

Nobody traveled for it. Zero flights, zero hotels, zero carbon guilt. 

And the engagement was higher than most in-person workshops I've done.

Yet, we still treat in-person training like it's the gold standard. 

If people are not in a room together, learning doesn't count.

Meanwhile:

My friend experienced her colleague taking credit for her work in a meeting in front of 15 people (including their CEO)

Her mind screamed, 

‘Say something,’ 

but she didn’t.

(or rather I’d say, ‘she couldn’t)

She told herself that she was ‘being professional’

But she wasn’t being professional.

Rather, she was scared.

That silence cost her a promotion she had worked toward for 8 months.

Remembering this incident last night, I want to say that:

The situations that feel most uncomfortable to face are usually the exact ones blocking your growth.

After years of avoiding every difficult moment possible, here are 10 situations you can’t run from:

1. Owning your mistake publicly
2. The conversation you’ve been avoiding
3. The promotion interview you don’t feel ready for
4. The opportunity that feels too big for you right now
5. The day you want to quit after everything goes wrong
6. Speaking up when someone takes credit for your work 
7. The conflict you keep hoping will somehow resolve itself
8. Learning from someone who is better than you at what you do
9. The feedback that makes you want to defend yourself immediately
10. Admitting “I don’t know” when everyone expects you to have answers

And talking for myself,

Every time I’ve run from discomfort, I’ve delayed my own growth.

Every time I’ve stayed, even when every instinct screamed to leave, 

I’ve built something real.

So, stop asking yourself, 
“How do I avoid uncomfortable situations?”

“What am I avoiding right now that my career actually needs?”

I don’t usually talk about this. 

But behind every session I lead is a version of me that almost didn’t survive.

At 25, I got married.
Everyone said I was “settled.”
But inside that home, I was falling apart.

Because abuse doesn’t always scream. 

Kabhi kabhi woh itna silent hota hai that you start to believe maybe I deserve this.

So, I stayed.

Because I thought leaving meant I failed.

Because I was scared.

Because I kept thinking, “Shaayad kal better ho jaaye.”

By 26, I was numb.

Some days I couldn’t get out of bed.
Some days, I didn’t want to exist at all.

When I finally left, I wasn’t proud. I was grieving.

Not just the marriage, but the version of me I lost inside it.

And still I started again, slowly, quietly.

→ Faked confidence until it felt real
→ Helped others speak, while I found my own voice again

That’s how I rebuilt:

Use when you need receipts, not responses.

Use when you need clarity, not confusion.

1. Nuanced discussions

Use when you need a connection, not just content.

1. Sensitive conversations
2. Brainstorming sessions
3. Relationship building
4. Quick desk-side clarifications (if they're actually quick)

📍Bonus tip: 

If you're in the office and it's under 2 mins + they're available, sure, walk over. Otherwise, respect their flow and ping first.

This isn't rocket science. 

But it is a skill most teams are missing.

I’ve trained in rooms where people speak English, but think in Marathi, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil

Same company, same goals, but completely different communication styles.

We love patting ourselves on the back for being diverse. 

But when a South Indian team feels a North Indian manager is "too aggressive," or a Gen Z employee thinks their Gen X boss is "dismissive", we call it a "communication gap."

When really it's India's invisible boardroom barrier.

Because while communicating, you’re navigating:

1. Awareness:
Recognize that your communication style is shaped by region, generation, and upbringing. It's not universal.

Match your message to your audience. One style doesn't fit all rooms.

3. Ask:
When in doubt, clarify:
What does yes mean here?
How do you prefer feedback?
What's the protocol for disagreement?

India's diversity is incredible. 

But if we are not actively learning to communicate across cultures, not just languages, we're wasting it.

This is what I experienced initially 

I didn’t set boundaries and just kept giving my time, energy, support, listening ear, coaching, presence.

In short, sab de diya!

Not because I wanted anything back.

But thoda respect? 
Thoda sa consistency?

That’s not too much to expect from your inner circle, right?

Turns out, it is.

And here’s what I learned the hard way:

People will treat you exactly how you allow them to.

I used to blame others. But one day I sat with it, and realized: I let them.

→ I stayed available for one-sided friendships
→ I showed up 100% for people who gave me 10%
→ I overextended for people who barely showed up

That’s not kindness.
That’s self-abandonment dressed as empathy.

So I stopped.

No fights, no drama
Just silence, boundaries, and a fair distance

I stopped replying
I stopped over-explaining
I stopped caring the way I used to

Because if you can’t stand beside me at my lowest,
You don’t get a front row seat at my best.

1. The job market is projected to grow only 4.4% in H2 of 2025-26, up from 2.8% earlier. Growth is cautious, not carefree. 

2. Over 90% of Gen Z professionals in India say visual communication skills matter more than ever. They want design-led workflows, not just text-heavy reports. 

3. Employers list communication skills as India’s #1 hiring priority (37% of employers say so). In a world of hybrid teams and cross-border meetings, clarity is now non-negotiable. 

A new Harvard-backed list shows the most future-proof skills: communication, persuasion, emotional intelligence and adaptability. 

Meanwhile, automation and AI aren’t distant threats; they’re already reshaping roles across sectors. 

If you’re leaning only on your degree, you’re running behind. 

After training thousands of professionals and speaking on many stages, here’s what I know for sure:

🔰 Technical skills might get you the interview
🔰 Human skills get you the room

Because when everything else changes, one thing remains constant:
Those who speak with clarity, listen with intent, and lead with empathy will always stand out.

The question you must ask today isn’t Do soft skills matter?

It’s How fast are you building yours?

So I’ll ask you:

AI writes better content than my team now. 

What's my value?

This is what a product manager asked me this yesterday. 

She looked like her career just became obsolete.

I asked her: "Can AI feel the frustration your customer felt at 2 AM when they abandoned their cart?"

And she paused before answering:

"No, 
But does that matter if the AI copy converts better?"

Wrong question!

Right question: 

"What can I do that a machine never will?"

Here's Bernard Marr's answer:

9 skills AI can't touch:

1. Creativity
2. Leadership
3. Critical thinking
4. ⁠Communication
5. ⁠Growth mindset
6. Decision-making
7. Cultural intelligence
8. Embracing change
9. Emotional intelligence

But we've called these "soft" for so long, we forgot they're actually the hardest to develop.

AI now handles the "hard" stuff like data, analysis, pattern recognition, content.

What it can't do is pattern breaking.

AI optimizes existing solutions. 

Humans imagine solutions that don't exist yet.

But we're terrible at this.

We've been trained to analyze, not invent. 

Perfect processes, not question them. 

Sound smart using existing frameworks, not create new ones.

Meanwhile, AI is getting really good at sounding smart with existing frameworks.

So what's actually left for us?

The messy human work:

→ Asking questions that feel stupid but unlock new thinking
→ Leading through uncertainty without fake certainty
→ Connecting ideas from wildly different places
→ Feeling problems customers can't articulate
→ Reading tension in a room that data misses

Your technical skills have an expiration date.

Your ability to think creatively, communicate clearly, read emotions, and adapt? 

That's permanent value📍

Why is your 1:1 a waste of time?

Because you use them to get updates, not build trust

I asked, “When they do, what happens?”

He said, “I tell them how to fix it.”

You think you’re being efficient.

→ Ask “How are you?” but can't wait for an answer

So stop treating empathy like a soft skill; it’s your ROI multiplier.

Your team isn’t underperforming because they don’t care.
