While I was the CFO of the lead bank, I was also the secretary-treasurer of the bank holding company.  I became a director of the holding company in 2015.  During this period, the holding company was active with the acquisition of a California bank, the sale of this bank after performance improvement and ultimately the decision to sell the family owned holding company. 

I participated in all the discussions and provided strategic options for the Board's decisions.

American Trust & Savings Bank

I was the CFO for a $1.2 Billion Community Bank until the Bank was sold May 2019.  I was also the Secretary/Treasurer and Director of ATBancorp, the multi-bank holding company whose lead bank was ATSB. My responsibilities included ALCO, bank operations, strategic planning and general executive management.  During the merger process, I participated in negotiations and oversaw the due diligence process, and assisted in the transition planning.

BankPlus,FSB

Responsible for financial reporting, accounting and check processing operations for a $300 million thrift.  Developed a brokered loan program and participated in price setting, product development, marketing/ calling programs, evaluation of merger/ acquisition opportunities and asset-liability management. BankPlus was affiliated with Illinois Mutual Insurance. The Bank was sold in September 2007.

Managed the operations and performance of corporate affiliates.  Participated in affiliate management as needed.  Identified and evaluates additional strategic affiliations.  Supervised retail investment sales activities of an affiliated broker-dealer and producer group from 1998 through the end of 2005.  Also worked with fixed annuity product management and development.

Par-A-Dice Gaming Corporation, 

Executive manager for financial operations of a $100 million gaming and hotel operation.  Supervised 120 employees including information processing, purchasing and gift shop. Actively developed and managed regulatory relations program with Illinois Gaming Board.  Supervised due diligence process for Company's sale to Boyd Gaming.

Developed and implemented business development program for firm’s banking practice resulting in significant local office client growth. Assisted clients with strategic planning, asset-liability management, merger-acquisition analysis, profit improvement strategies, branch location evaluation and systems selection.

MIDWEST FINANCIAL GROUP, INC.

Developed and implemented a strategic planning process and the annual profit planning budgeting process for $2.5 billion multi-bank holding company and subsidiaries.  Personally facilitated planning meetings and chaired the Asset-Liability Management and Investment committees. Evaluated and advised senior management and Board regarding merger/acquisitions, and organized due diligence process.  Presented monthly reports to Board of Directors.

First National Bank in Champaign

Developed and implemented asset-liability management program, responsibility center accounting, budgeting process and internal audit procedure for a community bank. Reported to Board of Directors Monthly. Facilitated the Strategic Planning Process. This Bank was one of four founding members of Midwest Financial Group.

Participated in audits primarily of community financial institutions.  Worked extensively with documenting operational procedures for internal control evaluations.

Am passionate about working with small to medium sized businesses to resolve problems.  And that passion creates the energy to begin a new endeavor, JohnWServices, LLC.  

My career has spanned a number of years with multiple businesses.  Primarily, I have worked with mid-size companies in regulated industries. Although most of those years were connected to community banks, I was fortunate to work in gaming, securities, insurance and consulting. 

Building teams and developing problem solving strategies is the common denominator.  Early in my career, I discovered that I could not do everything myself.  That realization led me to adopt delegation.  The result was the pleasure of helping others grow and succeed through their hard work and ingenuity.  If you are a leader, this is the goal.

As an executive, your perspective shifts as you work with the Directors and owners as well as staff.  Collaboration is critical to successful relationships at this level.  I learned to listen closely and read between the lines while helping to lead the organizations.

Developing strategies that meet the needs of multiple constituencies is a complex process.  It is more complex in regulated industries where the regulators are also an important stakeholder.  I have negotiated these treacherous waters on multiple occasions.  Many times it is a balancing act with compromise as the only viable solution. 

Telling the story is essential to finding common ground.  Too many times opinions are based upon incomplete information.  My job in many cases was to explain the company’s story in comprehensible ways to each of my constituencies.  Financial statements serve as a basis for the story. Explaining the “numbers” in terms of performance and what they mean for the future is the greater challenge. I have often described my CFO role as “a storyteller.”
