The top 5 things I'd do to improve a subscription program with little time.

I'll list them by potential impact for your business:

1. Default to subscribe and save with some simple design changes to make the subscription option more prominent.

Impact: 30-40% opt-in rate (minimum) - more subscribers coming in

2. Upsell to subscriptions in the cart. Simple, straightforward, but effective.

Impact: additional 10% improvement to opt-in rate

3. Make the billing reminder feel like a value reminder than a transaction. Show them why they subscribed in the first place.

Impact: lower monthly churn 10-15%

4. Update the cancel flow with better copy, stronger offers to stay, and a founder video on the splash screen when someone first cancels.

Impact: minimum 10% improvement on your cancel save rate

5. Make the onboarding flow feel educational and welcoming. There are so many questions people have; show them how you're different and how they can be successful with you.

Impact: lower MoM churn by 5-10%

My name is Eric Smith from a small farm city in Northern Utah called Hooper (good luck on the pronunciation). I play the guitar (sorta). I like to exercise as if I were still in my 20's. My wife and I lovvve animals, especially cats (we currently have four. No shame!) I used to live in a mortuary - like, legit. And I kinda look like Johnny Bravo, I guess?

For over 10 years I have proven the ability to successfully launch, lead, and develop various teams and departments ranging from sales to business development and partnerships. All the while learning how to be led at the same time. 

Reflecting on my professional career is both gratifying and humbling as I recognize how my leadership abilities have led to quantifiable company growth. The ability to develop, organize, and execute new processes allowed me to launch successful sales teams and whole departments helping my company to achieve the honor of being a two-time Inc. 500 company, as well as being recognized as one of Utah’s fastest-growing companies multiple years in a row. 

Although these company growth achievements have been fulfilling, my passion and gratitude for what I do come from supporting and developing individual people. Creating positive employee outcomes and learning how to transform low performers who lack confidence into top producers is a skill of mine. My ability to lead and motivate others is a direct result of my personal drive to become an expert among experts while also learning how to do better the next time. Through criticism and the ability to admit when I’ve made a mistake I am able to make a meaningful change that makes me a better leader.

Lastly, I have endless energy and passion! I also thrive on being able to create meaningful conversations with everyone I meet and bring value to each interaction.

eTail™ West… genuinely don’t know where to start. 

In more ways than I can count, you crushed. 

And you crushed because you brought the right people, to the right place, for 3 full days of amazing’ness. 

Some people say it’s a “mini shoptalk”

But honestly, I hate to even compare. 

Palm Springs vs Vegas. Like… COME ON! 

Palm trees vs Casinos. Like… COMMMMME ON!! 

Truly obsessed with the space and intimacy eTail West brings vs other conferences 

This year, Pattern® took a different approach 

No booth. No speaking. But instead, two dinners, a wine tasting event, an impromptu lunch, and a champagne/caviar event with fancy cars. 

The best part about eTail..? 

I never felt like I was selling anything or myself the entire time! (Breath of fresh air)

I was thinking about tagging everybody I engaged with, but I’m just gonna let the pictures do the talkin’.

Natural Products Expo West was awesome. So awesome!

As a first time goer, here's my authentic review/feedback and a couple hacks:

- Hack: As a retailer/vendor... Go the day before the exhibit halls technically open. Make friends with a nice security guard. "Sneak" into the Exhibit Hall while booths are still being built. Network and get a head start on "the lay of the land". :)

- When needing to use the restroom, walk a little further, and use the ones on the outer edges of Hall A and D. Bathrooms just outside Hall B and C were insane.

- For lunch, don't waste your time leaving the exhibit hall. Get some friends and walk the "up and coming" brands hall. They're sooo eager to give away food. Fuel. Network. Sweet convo's. Boom.

- Make friendlies and make friendlies fast. The show is so massive it's hard to talk to everyone you want to talk to. Let your top 3-5 partners know who you want to talk to, and look our for each other "Hey, John. That dude you wanted to talk to at Sports Research is back at the booth now. Hurry over."

- Another Hack: offer to ask prospect brands if you can get them some food or a drink. They're super busy and tired managing their booth. Show value without selling, but by being a friendly human. They'll never forget it.

- Connecting on LinkedIn is cool. Exchanging cell phone numbers is cooler. Take a pic with someone in THEIR booth, offer to text it to em. Boom. You have their cell.

Overall, I give Expo a 10/10 for this category. Any one who's any one is there, and everyone is incredibly pleasant. I attribute this to everyone being fed non-stop! lol

My perspective may also have been slightly influenced by the event Pattern® did at Disney!

Just want to say thank you to everyone who gave me some of their time to chat and catch up (And for letting me take sooo many selfies. haha). Face-to-face time is the best!

Really appreciated reading the Utah Business piece on Melanie Alder and the journey to Pattern®'s IPO

The headline is honestly historic! "The largest Utah IPO led by a female co-founder". Dang. And I have the coolest opportunity to be a small part of this amazing company/success story. 

Mel and David Wright have been building Pattern together for years. Not chasing headlines or rushing. Just steady execution and a ton of trust between founders and team.

Proof of their commitment to their employees, and believing strongly that business is a team sport was witnessing all of the long-tenured employees they flew out to NYC to ring the Nasdaq bell with them. 100+. 

This was more than just a liquidity event. It was also a huge culture moment for all of us. 

Like many other awesome companies. Pattern was not built overnight. It was built over years of alignment between founders, a strong executive team, and hundreds of people who believed in the mission early.

The IPO is a milestone, but the culture behind it is the real story.

As someone who works in partnerships every day, I am reminded that the best outcomes usually come from durable relationships and complementary strengths.

Congrats to Mel and the entire Pattern team on a moment that reflects years of steady execution.

This is bigger than it looks.

Amazon partnering more deeply with OpenAI is being framed as a cloud and infrastructure story.

It is. But it is also a shopping story.

If Amazon strengthens its AI engine behind the scenes, that eventually shows up in how people discover products, compare options, and make decisions.

A few things I’m thinking about:

• Recommendations could become more guided and less “search and scroll”
• Product pages may matter less than how well your data can be interpreted
• The brands that win might be the ones built for machine readability, not just visual appeal

This does not mean marketplaces are going anywhere.

If anything, it reinforces their importance. The rails stay the same. The layer on top evolves.

At Pattern®, we spend a lot of time thinking about how structured content, digital shelf quality, and clean data prepare brands for exactly this kind of shift.

For brands, this is a quiet reminder.

Clean data. Clear positioning. Consistent signals. Those fundamentals are not optional.

Feels early. But directionally important.

After an incredible journey at G FUEL, where I led ecommerce and growth initiatives, I’m now stepping into a new chapter after being impacted by a recent layoff.

This role has been an incredible journey! I started as an Ecommerce Coordinator and grew into Director-level responsibilities, leading teams, building strategies, and driving growth across all channels. Along the way, I learned so much about resilience, leadership, and what it takes to scale in a fast-moving environment.
