What happens when you take a patriotic American song and make it about biking?

You get "Battle Hymn of the Bicycle" - my new single that just dropped.

A fun reimagining of "Battle Hymn of the Republic."

Instead of marching into battle, we're pedaling through puddles.

The recording process was pure joy:

↳ Captured wind rushing past during morning rides
↳ Recorded the rhythmic click-click of pedal rotations
↳ Found melodies in the sound of tires on wet pavement
↳ Replaced war drums with the gentle whoosh of spinning spokes

The contrast made me smile every day in the studio.

"Battle Hymn of the Republic" carries the weight of history and conflict.

But what if that same soaring grandeur could celebrate something wonderfully ordinary?

The small triumph of choosing to bike instead of drive.
The quiet victory of fresh air filling your lungs.
The surprisingly epic feeling of conquering that hill on your morning commute.

XDG Labs is a research organisation engaged in projects, places and people to advance our core purpose: healthy habitats.

This research project seeks to explore the connections between the built environment and citizen well-being; factors being researched: intentional and unintentional public spaces being used for informal / formal meditation & mindfulness practices; the density and frequency of use of such spaces, in neighbourhoods and districts, and corresponding data on health outcomes (with a focus on mental health).

The research further seeks to inform the creation of a ‘conscious places / cities’ index, that can help shape a narrative around how the creation of intentional social meditation spaces, alongwith intentional communication to nudge behaviour to drive usage of these spaces, is positively correlated, and impacts the overall well-being of urban communities; it explores the need for fundamental changes in our built environment to provide social support and ‘normalisation’ of meditation in public spaces. 

This project advances a vision of healthier cities, by decoding the links between better mental health and conscious urban design. It aims to provide a general model, as well as specific prescriptive guidance, that can unify urban planners, policymakers, commercial real estate developers and investors, educators, healthcare leaders, and media, behind this important cause: a conscious city.

From Mumbai, India’s global city, to Jaipur, Bharat’s original world city, and eventually to Amdavad, a heritage city in transition. 

Three cities. Different trajectories. Shared pasts. What does the future hold for these cities? What choices made by their citizens and leaders today, will shape the destiny of future generations?

As I reflect on my two weeks in India, and navigate Bengaluru’s bumpy roads and bumper to bumper traffic, I can’t help but wonder what sort of systemic shifts are underway in this continental country.

In a 1972 speech, S. Rajaratnam defined Singapore as a "Global City," arguing that by plugging into the world, the nation’s hinterland becomes global. 

Key elements of the "Global City" vision include:

The World as Hinterland: Rajaratnam, then-Foreign Minister, argued that Singapore did not need a physical hinterland (neighboring countries) if it functioned as a vital hub for global trade, finance, and services.

Essential Lifeline: Staying open is not optional; it is a critical strategy for a small, resource-constrained nation to ensure long-term prosperity.

Trust and Stability: Singapore's reputation as a reliable, stable, and transparent hub is its competitive advantage in a volatile global landscape.

Continuous Transformation: Leaders like PM Lawrence Wong emphasize that while the world is changing, Singapore must continue to be a "Global City" by investing in AI, innovation, and digital economies.

Balance: The goal is to remain globally connected while ensuring the city serves as a home for its citizens, providing, for instance, secure housing and a high quality of life.

Economic development and the promise of prosperity can be transformational for countries. 

The conversation on the ground, and the energy in summits and roundtables, is markedly different in 2026 than in 1996, or 2006, or 2016.

Decade on decade, development has compounded and is starting to penetrate the psychology of the nation. 

This psychology isn’t seeking wealth for wealth’s sake. 

It’s recognising the value of values, the nature of development itself, investing in process not just  outcome. 

This is how capability development happens and this is where maximum effort must now be made.

The Berlin Wall did fall. Even the day before, the experts couldn’t imagine that was ever possible. Yet, it happened the very next day!

As a 10 year old orphan girl sang to the President of the United States once:
