When I started my first company while I was still in school, I just wanted to find a better way to earn a living. I was living in small-town Indiana selling vacuum cleaners door to door (yes, that’s seriously still a real occupation) and I was willing to do whatever it took to get out of my current situation. 

I read every book on business and finance I could get my hands on. And I participated in every business conference and networking event I could get to, even if that meant catching the bus when my car wasn’t working. 

It’s been a heck of a ride since those early startup days. After selling that first business, I started a few more—some successful, others not so much. I even joined other startup teams leading marketing, or product, or sales. 

And there was one thing I learned through that whole process…

There’s a lot of noise. 

There are a lot of people talking about doing stuff—talking about changing the world, talking about creating wealth, and talking living "the good life." But I got the most value when I connected with the people who had done what I was trying to do. 

I originally started Verge because I wanted to know that I wasn’t completely crazy. I felt so alone. 

But as my businesses grew, I found more and more people who were challenging themselves, growing, and learning along the way. That original community is the foundation of what Verge is today, and we’ve built a team and tools around it to make it easier than ever to create cool stuff that matters.
