I hit that goal before 2026 began.

There was always an expectation of secrecy when I was a child. I was made responsible for keeping the family skeletons in the closet. I was forced to hide guilt, shame, pain, trauma—my own thoughts and feelings—and the truth.

Lately I’ve been thinking about how difficult it is to balance professional responsibilities with being a poet, writer, and artist.

Some days, it feels like being pulled in different directions—my priorities and passions competing for the same limited hours.

I've spent every single holiday dinner for the past 10 years or so trying to help my relatives understand the basics of what I do for a living. Some of my favorite summaries so far have been:

"You're a blogger."
"You put stuff on the internet." 
"You're a writer but not, like, books."

Sort of...but not quite.

Here's the gist: I'm a full-time freelance writer who specializes in creating long-form online content (primarily blog posts and ebooks) for software clients in the careers, human resources, productivity, project management, and business ownership spaces.

I have a knack for writing content that's approachable, conversational, and engaging but simultaneously ranks well in SERPs (go ahead and Google "SMART goals" or "STAR interview method" if you need proof 😉).

Some of my past and current clients include Trello, Loom, Atlassian, Glassdoor, Workable, Wrike, GoSkills, QuickBooks, Handshake, Miro, Culture Amp, The Muse, Toggl, and more. Plus, my work has been published and/or syndicated by The New York Times, Forbes, Fast Company, Inc., Business Insider, TIME, Mashable, and LifeHacker, to name just a few.

I know some people say LinkedIn isn't the place for "politics" or "personal" stuff. I know you expect relatable quips about freelancing when you see my name pop up here. I know we've all become exceptionally good at tuning out the world, pretending nothing is happening, and showing up here.

But I also know that I can't do any of that today.

I spent a good chunk of my weekend fielding phone calls and texts from old friends, all of which went something like this: "Alex Pretti was shot and killed. OUR Alex Pretti."

Alex and I shared the stage (and the sacred safe space known as the "choir room") for many musical, play, and show choir performances during the two years we overlapped in high school.

This is a photo of him in our production of "Guys and Dolls." Until seeing the news this weekend, he was frozen in my mind and memory just like this.

High school is a time when kids can be notoriously awful (and upperclassmen are particularly intimidating), but Alex was as welcoming and inclusive as they come. I've always remembered his kind and gentle nature, his quick (and sometimes mischievous) sense of humor, his warm smile, and his big laugh.

You know that guy that too many of the younger girls had a hopeless crush on? That was Alex.

We haven't kept in touch since high school, but it sounds like all of those qualities that made him so adored stayed with him (and only grew stronger) in adulthood.

His killing is senseless, and I'm so sad for his family, friends, and all of the people who were lucky enough to love him. Honestly, I'm so sad for all of us. 💔
