Refuse to automate what cannot be explained

This morning, I had the honor of serving as the keynote speaker at the 2026 Executive Leadership Conference for the American Academy of Physician Associates.

In the room: 300+ #PA and #NP leaders from across the country.

Not beginners.

Decision-makers.

The people who determine whether AI becomes noise…
or becomes patient impact.

We didn’t talk about shiny demos.

We talked about consequences.

Here’s what we unpacked:

Not because AI replaces us.

But because the demand curve, burnout rates, and complexity of care are outpacing human capacity alone.

AI is not the captain of the ship.

You are.

AI is the lighthouse.

Grateful for the thoughtful questions on governance, regulation, and responsible implementation and for the leaders who stayed after to wrestle with the hard parts.

The future of healthcare won’t be written by algorithms.

It will be written by clinicians courageous enough to shape how those algorithms are used.

The real question is:

Will we design AI around medicine…

Or redesign medicine around AI?

As a Digitalization Humanist, Futurist, and Innovation Key Opinion Leader, I regularly speak at international events about cutting-edge technologies such as Digital Health, Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, Big Data, Augmented Reality / Virtual Reality, 5G, Blockchain, and Healthcare in the Metaverse. However, I believe that while these technologies are truly remarkable, it is crucial to always prioritize people in our design process to ensure that technology serves humans and not the other way around.

Prior to this, I spent approximately 30 years in global roles in big multinationals, primarily in the pharmaceutical industry (about 15 years at Novartis & 1 year at Lonza) and previously in the specialty chemicals industry (about 15 years at Ciba & Ciba Specialty Chemicals). I was fortunate to travel the world and encounter a diverse range of cultures, which was an incredible experience.

As I enter my early retirement phase, I feel compelled to give back to the community. I feel responsible for the world we are handing over to future generations, and I want to support their efforts to create positive change. Although some may argue that I am not personally responsible for the world's issues, I believe that we all have a role to play in creating a better future.

Where Longevity Conversations Turn Into Real Connections 🧬

Yesterday I had the pleasure of participating in the GAME CHANGER SWITZERLAND EVENT IN ZURICH, a truly inspiring gathering bringing together innovators, scientists, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders exploring the future of LONGEVITY, HEALTH OPTIMIZATION, AND HUMAN POTENTIAL.

The day was filled with FASCINATING TALKS, FORWARD THINKING DISCUSSIONS, AND CUTTING EDGE INNOVATIONS that once again confirmed how rapidly the longevity ecosystem is evolving. From biomarkers to personalized health strategies, the conversations clearly showed that we are entering a new era where PREVENTIVE, DATA DRIVEN, AND HUMAN CENTRIC HEALTHCARE will redefine how we think about aging and wellbeing.

Beyond the stage discussions, one of the greatest privileges of such events is always the HUMAN CONNECTIONS.

I was especially happy to spend some quality time again with my dear friends Dr. Martha Boeckenfeld and Dr. Dominik Thor, whose work and perspectives in the longevity space continue to inspire me.

It was also wonderful to finally meet in person some LinkedIn connections I had only interacted with online so far, including Dr. Dr. Kateryna Kondratiuk, MD, PhD, MPA or Dr Christopher Wall, who was showcasing the impressive SALIVA BIOMARKER SOLUTION from Maven Health at the exhibition area.

Innovations like these are a strong reminder that BIOMARKER DRIVEN PREVENTIVE HEALTH is moving rapidly from concept to real world application.

Starting tomorrow, I will be attending health.tech | global summit in Basel and I am genuinely looking forward to it.

Originally, I was scheduled to travel to Dubai this week. Due to the tragic circumstances currently unfolding in the region, that trip was cancelled. My thoughts remain with everyone affected.

It also means that I will now be able to attend this important gathering close to home in Basel. Sometimes plans change, and presence shifts closer than expected.

After decades in global healthcare and countless conferences across the Middle East, Africa, Europe and beyond, what truly matters to me is not another stage full of consensus. It is real dialogue. Real friction. Real implementation.

Honest discussions about adoption, procurement, scaling and AI integration.
Healthcare transformation does not happen in keynote rooms alone. It happens at the intersection of startups, pharma, investors, policymakers and practitioners willing to challenge each other constructively.

Great Conversations Often Matter More Than Great Slides 🚀

After three inspiring days at the health.tech | global summit in Basel, I am leaving this event with a simple reflection.

Sometimes the real value of a conference is not only on the stages…
It is in the conversations happening between the sessions.

This week confirmed it once again.

With hundreds of innovators, founders, clinicians, investors and policymakers gathered in the same place, the energy was remarkable. What made this event particularly special was the strong focus on networking. I have rarely seen so many dedicated meeting tables designed specifically to facilitate real exchanges.

For me personally, the three days were incredibly rich from a networking and meeting perspective, reconnecting with friends and colleagues from across the global health innovation ecosystem and meeting many new inspiring people.

And this time, there was an additional luxury.

The event took place only 10 km from my home near Basel.
No intercontinental flights, no jet lag, just meaningful conversations and great discussions about the future of healthcare.

A big thank you to the organizers for bringing together such a vibrant community.

The future of health innovation will not be built by technologies alone.

Longevity Frontiers: When Science, Vision, And Leadership Converge 🧬

Last Friday, I had the pleasure of attending a truly inspiring panel discussion at the GAME CHANGER Switzerland held at the Zentrum Glockenhof in Zurich.

The session, titled LONGEVITY FRONTIERS, brought together an outstanding group of thought leaders to explore one of the most fascinating questions of our time: how science, technology, and human-centered innovation are reshaping the future of healthy aging.

It was a real privilege to listen to some exceptional minds on stage:

The discussion was expertly moderated by Alexander Fürer who guided the conversation with great insight and energy.

One moment from the session particularly stayed with me. During her introduction, Martha shared a powerful observation that perfectly captured the shift we are experiencing:

“THE ACTUAL ECOSYSTEM IS USED TO HAVING LINEAR PROGRESSION, BUT TECHNOLOGY IS NOT LINEAR. IT IS EXPONENTIAL.”

This statement resonates deeply with what we are witnessing today across longevity science, artificial intelligence, and digital health.

While many systems around us, healthcare regulation, business models, and institutional structures, still evolve at a linear pace, technological innovation is accelerating exponentially. This growing gap is precisely where both the greatest opportunities and the biggest challenges lie.

Longevity is therefore not only about biology or medicine. It is also about our collective ability to rethink systems, embrace interdisciplinary collaboration, and adapt to a future where breakthroughs may arrive faster than our traditional frameworks can handle.

The Future Of Healthcare Is Being Designed With Courage And Vision 🌙

Yesterday, I had the HONOR and PRIVILEGE of being invited to the Head Office of the Department of Health Abu Dhabi.

An institution that is not only regulating healthcare
but actively SHAPING its future.

During two highly insightful meetings, I had the opportunity to exchange with my brother Dr. Shahrukh Hashmi, whose clarity of vision and depth of execution reflect the outstanding work being done across the region. What he and his team are building is not incremental improvement. It is STRUCTURED TRANSFORMATION.

I was equally grateful to sit down with my brother Hesham Husni Abuasi, to explore how I could contribute to the remarkable work happening within their incubator and accelerator programs. Supporting innovation is not about slogans. It is about creating the right environment for ideas to become SCALABLE IMPACT.

It was also a blessing to briefly cross paths again with Dr. Asma Al Mannaei, on the very first day of Ramadan, and to wish her Ramadan Kareem in person. Moments like this remind us that leadership is not only about strategy, but about presence and values.

What struck me most was the quality of the people around the table.

Visionaries who understand that the future of healthcare must be:

• Prevention-oriented
• Ethically grounded

One of the true highlights of health.tech | global summit in Basel was meeting again in person my dear friend Koen Kas.

His opening keynote at the Horizon Stage at the Congress Center in Basel was powerful, visionary and deeply human at the same time. A rare combination.

Koen has always challenged conventional thinking in medicine, pushing us to move from reactive healthcare to predictive, personalized and participatory models. But what resonated most yesterday was not only the technology it was the mindset.

Ramadan Is A Time For Peace, Reflection And Protection 🤲🌙

My heart is with all my friends, brothers and sisters in the UAE and across the entire region during these difficult and uncertain days.

At a time that should be marked by reflection, gratitude and spiritual elevation, many are instead facing anxiety and concern for their loved ones. Moments like these remind us how fragile stability can be and how deeply interconnected we all are.

The UAE has always been, for me, a land of vision, safety and unity, my second home. A place where innovation meets humanity, and where people from all backgrounds live side by side in mutual respect. It is precisely during challenging times that these values matter most.

From Science To Self Experimentation In Longevity 🔬

This morning I finally did something that I often recommend when speaking about the future of healthcare.

I TESTED MYSELF.

Thanks to the team at HealthFluencer, I received a GlycanAge test kit delivered directly to my home and completed the blood sampling today.

A big thank you to Diana Mereu and Teodora Pamfile for inviting me to be part of this testing initiative.

I was especially glad to be selected because about a month ago in Dubai I had the privilege of meeting Gordan Lauc, the scientist behind GlycanAge, and listening to his fascinating keynote at the Geneva College of Longevity Science Symposium.

Even better, I also had the pleasure of speaking at the same event about my LONGEVITY GPS concept.

For those who may not yet know it, GlycanAge measures biological age through GLYCANS, complex sugar molecules attached to antibodies that reflect inflammation and immune system aging. It is one of the most interesting biomarkers emerging in the longevity space.

As someone deeply involved in discussions around AI, longevity, digital health and personalized medicine, I strongly believe that the future of healthcare will rely on CONTINUOUS BIOMARKER MONITORING COMBINED WITH INTELLIGENT DATA INTERPRETATION.

But beyond the theory, it is always valuable to experience these technologies personally.

Now the waiting begins for the results.

I am curious to see what my immune system has to say about my biological age.

Longevity Is Not A Concept, It Is A Lifestyle We Build Together 🌱

Last Friday at the GAME CHANGER Switzerland Event in Zurich, I had the pleasure of joining a panel on “Digital Wellness Strategies: Reclaiming Human Health in the Age of AI” at the Zentrum Glockenhof Zürich.

What made this session truly special was the quality and authenticity of the discussion.

A sincere thank you to my co-panelist Vanessa Bertinotti and our moderator Tobias Stalmann for creating such a meaningful and well-balanced exchange.

Despite coming from very different backgrounds, it was fascinating to see how complementary our perspectives were.

Because in the end, LONGEVITY is not a buzzword.
IT IS A LIFESTYLE.

And more importantly, it is a shared responsibility that should bring us together rather than divide us into silos.

One of my key messages during the panel was the urgent need to protect and NURTURE COGNITIVE ATTENTION, especially for the younger generation growing up with AI.

We are entering a world where:

AI will not only assist decision-making
It may also influence behavior, perception, and even identity

And this comes with responsibility.

We must remain vigilant about the hidden agendas that can exist behind some technologies, particularly when business models rely on capturing attention, shaping habits, or influencing choices.

We have seen in the past how industries can drift.
The Opioid crisis is a powerful reminder.

Let us ensure we do not unintentionally step into a future of DIGITAL OPIOIDS, where technology soothes, distracts, or controls rather than empowers.

Technology should elevate humanity.
Not reduce it.

In other words, medicine is becoming continuous instead of episodic.

The real question is no longer:
“HOW DO WE TREAT DISEASE?”

It is becoming:

A powerful shift to reflect on as the week comes to an end.

Bomb Peace, Not People 🌍

As we approach the weekend, my thoughts are with the millions of people across the Middle East and beyond who are living through yet another tragic escalation of war.

Every conflict comes with numbers reported in the news: casualties, destroyed infrastructure, military losses. Yet anyone who has witnessed the human side of conflict knows that the real civilian toll is always far higher than what statistics can capture.

Behind every number there are families.
- Children.
- Parents.

Communities that may take generations to rebuild.

While innocent civilians continue to suffer across multiple countries from bombings and attacks, another thought keeps returning to my mind.

THE TRUE COST OF WARS IS NOT ONLY MEASURED IN LIVES LOST, BUT ALSO IN OPPORTUNITIES LOST.

Think about the staggering financial scale.

BILLIONS IN BOMBS.

Sometimes even TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS if you add also the operating costs including vessels, airplanes, soldiers, firefighters, doctors, nurses and other resources poured into weapons, destruction, and military escalation.

Now imagine for a moment if even a fraction of those resources were redirected toward what humanity truly needs.
- Healthcare systems that save lives.
- Nutrition programs that eradicate hunger.
- Education for future generations.
- Climate solutions protecting our planet.
- Technologies improving wellbeing for everyone.

How many millions of lives could be saved?
How many children could grow up healthy instead of in fear?

As someone working globally at the intersection of TECHNOLOGY, HEALTHCARE, and HUMAN-CENTERED INNOVATION, I cannot help but think that the greatest innovation humanity still needs is not technological.

It is PEACE.

Perhaps it is time we start thinking differently.

Instead of bombing cities,
LET US BOMB THE WORLD WITH PEACE, HEALTH, FOOD, EDUCATION, AND COMPASSION.

Because the future of humanity will not be decided by who wins wars,
but by HOW WE CHOOSE TO CARE FOR ONE ANOTHER.

My thoughts and prayers go to all civilians affected by violence and conflict.
May peace prevail.

When Protection Becomes Strategy: A Lesson From The UAE 🛡️

Over the past days, in the midst of a highly tense and dramatic situation in the Middle East, the United Arab Emirates has once again demonstrated something truly remarkable.

Not just technological strength…
But strategic foresight put into action.

The UAE’s advanced, multi-layered defense system has not only been designed with vision. It has been successfully deployed in real conditions, protecting its citizens against complex and evolving threats.
👉 Different types of attacks
👉 Different levels of complexity
👉 Different response mechanisms

All anticipated.
All prepared.
All coordinated.

This is not just defense.
👉 It is visionary leadership in action, proving that investing early in preparedness is what makes resilience possible when it matters most.

And it made me reflect…

What if we applied the same mindset to healthcare?

Because today, our health systems are facing their own “threat landscape”:

➡️ Lifestyle factors accumulating daily risk

Yet, we still largely operate in reaction mode.

Every Day Should Be Women’s Day But Today We Pause And Reflect 💜

Every year on International Women’s Day I repeat the same conviction.
Women should not be celebrated only one day per year.
They should be respected supported and empowered EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Those who know me well also know how deeply this belief shapes my work and my commitments.
Across my journey in healthcare AI digital health and innovation I have always tried to support women wherever I could.

Women in healthcare leadership
Women entrepreneurs and innovators in FEMTECH
Women in science and technology
And of course the global fight for BETTER WOMEN’S HEALTH.

Because societies that empower women build STRONGER ECONOMIES HEALTHIER FAMILIES AND MORE RESILIENT COMMUNITIES.

Yet today my thoughts are also very personal.

Just a few weeks ago on February 1st my mother left us.

On this INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY I find myself thinking about her and about all the mothers around the world who quietly carry extraordinary strength. Women who often put THEIR CHILDREN THEIR FAMILIES AND THEIR COMMUNITIES BEFORE THEIR OWN HEALTH AND WELLBEING.

My thoughts are particularly with the women living through conflicts and instability especially in parts of the Middle East and other regions of the world.
Women who continue to protect nurture and hold families together in circumstances many of us can hardly imagine.

Their courage rarely makes headlines.
But it deserves the world’s recognition.

So today is not only about celebration.
It is about GRATITUDE RESPECT AND RESPONSIBILITY.

Responsibility to build a world where women do not have to choose between CARING FOR OTHERS AND CARING FOR THEMSELVES.

And where the next generation of girls can grow up knowing that their ambitions voices and leadership are NOT EXCEPTIONS BUT EXPECTATIONS.

To all the incredible women in my life and in my global network

THANK YOU.

The AI Doctor Revolution Is Not Coming From Where Most People Think 🚀

Many discussions around AI in healthcare still focus on pilots, prototypes, or early-stage startups.

But when you look at what is happening in China, the picture is very different.

As highlighted in the excellent ecosystem map shared by my friend Effie GUO, China has not tried to build a single universal AI doctor.

Instead, it has built an entire AI healthcare stack.

At the infrastructure level, major technology players such as Baidu, Inc., Tencent, Alibaba Cloud, and Huawei provide the computing power, cloud architecture, and data capabilities that allow healthcare AI to scale rapidly.

On top of that foundation, dozens of specialized companies are developing AI solutions across very specific domains.
- AI medical imaging companies like Infervision or Deepwise
- Genomics and laboratory diagnostics leaders like BGI Genomics
- Clinical decision support systems built by companies such as IFLYTEK

What is particularly remarkable is that many of these solutions are already deployed in major hospitals, including institutions like Peking University Third Hospital.

In other words, this is not a future vision.
It is an operational ecosystem.

While many countries are still debating regulation, ethics frameworks, and reimbursement pathways, China has already built a multi-layered AI healthcare universe with infrastructure, algorithms, and real clinical deployment.

The lesson is clear.
AI in healthcare will not be driven by one single platform.
It will emerge from interconnected ecosystems combining infrastructure, specialized algorithms, and clinical integration at scale.

And China is currently showing what that model can look like.
