Self-Management of Depression

Depression is a complex illness, which presents in a myriad of ways and almost 60-70% people treated with antidepressants fail to achieve a symptom-free state when first treated with these medications. The treatment of depression cannot be pigeon-holed into one or two kinds of treatment modalities. Self-management is increasingly becoming the standard of care in people with long-standing medical conditions. Self-management puts one in the driver’s seat with regards to making choices regarding one’s health. However, treatment of depression has lagged behind in incorporating the concept of self-management with the most popular self-help paradigm on depression focusing mostly on cognitive-behavioral approaches. Self-management goes beyond the narrow perspective of self-help and addresses life style changes, social relationships, communication, problem-solving, and also includes elements of wellness and recovery.

In addition to conducting studies, I developed numerous assessments,  published, trained, peer-reviewed, mentored, and presented widely. Highlights: Principal investigator on nearly 3 million dollars in funded projects, 2016 article reprinted for Teaching Exceptional Children, and developed an all-in-one preschool-kindergarten assessment, generative curricula, and teacher training for preventing reading difficulties (by examining early literacy skills, working memory processing constraints, and classroom behavior factors in learning).

I directed the development and roll-out of a 48-measure state-wide assessment for preventing reading disabilities across K -12 grades. In addition to coordinating studies across three counties for assessing technical adequacy, I co-constructed measures and helped to shape its technology basis. Highlights: I trained 30+ testers on child-assessment procedures and directly supervised the work of testers, county leads, item developers, programmers, and other support staff.

I taught courses in the Special Education program about teaching diverse instructional needs (especially for students with learning disabilities), assessment, collaboration, and inclusionary practices. I also conducted field supervision (observing classroom instruction and providing specific feedback about teaching practices to promote teachers' professional growth). Highlight: Working closely with both pre-and in-service teachers to strengthen learning for students with special learning needs.

I’m LAY-LAWN-EE SIGH-EZ, a former researcher and now ICF-certified coach focused on helping others be more stress-resilient. What began as a passion to understand working memory -- a fundamental executive (brain) function we use for nearly everything not automatic -- turned into a need to share what I’ve learned. Working memory processing enables us to hold information in mind while doing or thinking about something else, and it's influenced by stress, attention, emotions, thoughts, skill level, and aging. It’s fundamental to how we self-regulate and do the things we do! 

My coaching is directly drawn from this essential aspect of how we are at any moment. I use a sincere and practical approach that’s based on brain, cognitive, & psychological research and mindfulness teachings. I use a RESiLIEnt framework to help overwhelmed clients think, feel, and live better so that they can optimally self-manage and stay stress resilient. This means discovering how they best function (including motivations, strengths, and needs) and how to leverage this as a resource each day, to navigate through challenges and uncertainty clear, strong, and ready to take beneficial action. They enhance how they use their natural capacities. 😉

I also present, educate, and consult on topics that cultivate greater stress resilience, such as optimizing working memory through brain-healthy habits, preventing personal overload & decision fatigue, and enhancing wonder for positive well-being.
