I worry that AI is taking marketers farther away from the fundamentals, at a time when it's more crucial than ever to know them.

The environment in which many teams are operating today is less stable than it has been in decades, and markets more prone to rapid demand shifts than ever. 

In SaaS, for example, the underlying market growth that was for a long time a given has stalled or been disrupted by AI, but the targets being set by leadership and investors have not caught up to the reality. 

Double digit company growth targets in a category that's flat or contracting is a very different marketing strategy and a very different timeline, and AI can only help that in minor ways since it's about changing buyer behavior.

The ability for performance marketing and demand gen to follow data signals to pipeline is massively undercut by increased perceived buyer risk and a shift towards conservative buying habits. 

Underinvestment on brand when buying habits favor safe brand choices has enormous impact on companies who are majority spending on demand gen.

The value and need for marketers to be properly trained in the fundamentals is not new, but the leadership pressure is all around pushing to run marketing around and through AI.

The problem is that it's happening on an often incorrect foundation about how marketing works and through tactics that are lessening in efficacy.

Does marketing produce growth through pure persuasion or through developed mental associations, or both? What's the balance, and how much does it vary by price point, category maturity, buyer maturity, and so on? 

How far can a performance marketing program go before it hits the ceiling and becomes unsustainable - how does that point change with changing buyer sentiment?

If we engage in an AI industrial revolution of marketing and the techniques we're mechanizing are wrong, then we only accelerate the pace of decline. We already saw with martech and sales tech what happens when you try to outrun an ineffective tactic by increasing the scale of it.

AI is primarily improving the efficiency of marketing today but not the effectiveness of it, and that's not good news if the efficiency value is being cancelled out by declining tactic efficacy.

Maybe the future demands that AI will own a large part of the marketing strategy and execution, but those underlying fundamentals are only increasing in importance and scarcity, especially if marketers are becoming more technologist than strategist.

And when the market shifts in ways we don't understand, all of that elegant AI infrastructure won't shift with it unless directed by someone with marketing understanding.
