Everyone thinks it’s a mistake.

But it’s a strategy.

And that is how I got a 38% reply rate on outbound.

Because people do not respond to sequences.  
They respond to humans.


How to use it the right way.

- Only use it when the email is actually short  
- Keep the message plain text  
- Avoid heavy formatting and banners  
- Write like you talk  
- One idea per email  
- One simple next step  

A simple structure that pairs with it:

1) One line that proves relevance  
↳ a real reason you picked them

2) One line that shows proof  
↳ a clear one, not a feature

3) One easy action  
↳ “Worth a quick chat this week”  
↳ “Open to a short reply”  

Then let the iPhone line do its job.

The key idea.

You never win cold email with more tricks.

You win by sounding like a person.

“Sent from my iPhone” is not magic.

It is a signal.

And signals drive replies.

The first 2 lines of your email are the whole email.


Name. Subject.
Two lines of preview.
Decision made.

A simple rule:
Line 1 = their context
Line 2 = the tension

Not your company.
Not your role.
Not “quick intro”.

If your first 2 lines don’t have:

1. a signal
2. a point of view
3. an easy reply
  
you don’t have an opener.

Templates you can steal:

Line 1: “Saw you posted 6 SDR roles in 2 weeks.”
Line 2: “That’s usually when ramp gets messy; are you seeing it yet?”

Line 1: “Noticed you moved from [tool A] to [tool B].”
Line 2: “Most teams hit [specific friction] right after; is that on your radar?”

Line 1: “Saw you launched an enterprise plan.”
Line 2: “Does messaging stay consistent across reps, or is it drifting already?”

Write the body after you’ve earned line 3.

This sequence booked 35 meetings.
Cool. But that's only half the truth:

Not because it’s a lie.
But it’s incomplete.

Before our best-performing sequence, we ran 12 that underperformed.
And those 12 were the reason the 13th worked.

Not because we finally found a magic line.
Because we wrote things down and changed one thing at a time.

If you want outbound to be repeatable, try this for 30 days:

1 → After every sequence, write one sentence:
“People didn’t reply because ______.”

2 → Change one small thing and run it again.
Just one.

3 → Repeat until it sticks.

That’s the loop.
That’s the work.

You keep using subject lines like ‘’Quick question’’.
But you still want to sell.

Subject lines decide whether the rest of your work even enters the room. I’ve watched teams tweak CTAs, rewrite body copy, rebuild targeting logic, and still see nothing change until they fix the subject line.

3 different ones:

First, trigger references. Something the reader actually did. A visit. A spike. A failed action. Real signals, not imaginary ones invented.

Second, function-specific lines. Real language. The kind an ops manager uses when something breaks. The kind engineering reads without rolling their eyes. If it feels like their world, they engage.

Third, time-bounded lines. A clear window. Not drama. Not cheap urgency.
Most teams get stuck trying to be clever. Waste of energy. Simple structure. Real signal. Short text. That’s the whole game. The rest is ego.

If you want the highest probability of movement, pick one format that matches a real event and commit to it. 

The compounding effect shows up faster than people expect.

“I think outbound is not a good channel for us”
translation:

“I think being in direct contact with my market is not a good way to get leads”
One of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard.

Most people doing outbound are bad for this one reason:
They never implemented a clear process.

After helping more than 200 organizations in the last 3 years to generate leads.
Here’s the bare-minimum process to implement to start driving results:

1️⃣ List all the reasons that made you win new customers
2️⃣ Translate those reasons into buying signals
3️⃣ Create objectives to validate through outbound campaigns
4️⃣ Confirm or invalidate those campaigns
5️⃣ Repeat

The preview line is doing more than your sequence.

A useful opener should do one of these:

Name a real trigger
Point at a problem
Make the ask specific

Examples that fit:
“Saw you’re hiring SDRs—what’s the ramp plan this quarter?”

“Noticed the pricing page changed—testing conversion or ACV?”

“Quick one on outbound—are replies down since the new sequence?”

Takeaway: write 10 openers that start with “saw” or “noticed” plus one concrete detail.

Most DMs fail because they read like emails.

You can book meetings from DMs.
You also get ignored faster.

Email carry context.
DM should not.

Here’s a simple split:

Email structure:

- Trigger
- Problem
- Proof
- Next step

DM structure:

- One line of context
- One question they can answer in 10 seconds

Example: same offer, two formats.

Email:
“Noticed you’re hiring AEs.
That usually breaks onboarding consistency by week 3.
We help teams keep ramp tight without adding manager time.
Worth a 12-minute look next week?”

DM:
“Saw you’re hiring AEs.
Is onboarding already working well, or still being put together?”

Actionable takeaway: write the DM as the first line of a conversation.

If it would look normal on Slack, it’s probably right.
