Rachel Karten's Link in Bio newsletter is always a goldmine, and I love this particular edition — an interview with Christina Le. I follow so many of the Slate folks here on LinkedIn because their content is fascinating. I really appreciate how they all think about social. Christina says to think about LinkedIn like an ecosystem — which to me is interesting in light of broader shifts in thinking about creators on social: the idea of building a presence across platforms, with credibility that follows you. If you're a brand on LinkedIn, think of your leadership team and employees as a way to expand that credibility.

She says:

"When we approach our LinkedIn strategy, we don’t think 'how do we grow the Slate page?' We think, 'how do we increase Slate’s surface area on LinkedIn?' That age old belief that 'people follow people' is true. So we invest in personal brands internally. I think the solution to the “em dashes are an AI tell” is that we should all adopt AP style. Let's embrace spaces around the dash (until AI does it too).

I saw something the other day about how AI loves phrases like "today's fast-paced world." I get that, but like... how else are we supposed to describe it? "Today's *gestures at everything*"? It's useful to have a shorthand and I'm running out of creative ways to get this point across. 

This is facetious-ish, but the underlying point is: Sometimes you need to stop worrying and love the AI tells.

Your social, comms, marketing and content teams likely already ARE storytellers. These functions and skills aren't new, although I'm glad they're in the spotlight right now. Use this moment to make sure your company is set up to let these roles have real storytelling impact.

why now? because AI has changed the game completely.

when anyone can generate decent content in seconds, the bar is no longer "good enough"

what cuts through? genuine, human, compelling storytelling (and creatives.. but that’s another post). the kind that makes you feel something.

here's the thing though… you don't need to hire a head of storytelling to win at this.

✅ what you need is great storytellers within the team. and in most companies, that starts with the founders.

✅ they're the ones where someone at the top actually knows how to tell a story… about why the company exists, what their customers are going through, and what they uniquely do about it.

✅ in a world drowning in AI "slop", great storytelling+creative is the great differentiator. the companies identifying that early are the ones building moats.

the question isn't "should we hire a storyteller?"

it's "do we have storytellers in our dna already?"

I am cringe but I am free?

I've been reading so much "cringe discourse" lately — a desire to embrace cringe, or even the idea that cringe is an obligation for professional growth in today's digital world. I loved this article (https://lnkd.in/gGSZDAyJ) by Juliette Dallas-Feeney about the cost of being invisible:

"But what makes this more than a feelings problem is that the cost of staying invisible has also changed. So many people are showing up online now, because they have to. Our digital identity is increasingly tied to our economic viability."

And I think that's honestly true. Visibility is scary, and feels cringe, but it's the gateway to opportunity today. I also saw a fantastic reel (https://lnkd.in/guvCQrkB) this morning from Justin Schuman about the idea, inspired by Judith Butler, that posting — being visible — helps shape who you are, in a way that therapy or other private ways of trying to evolve your identity, can't. 

This is a fascinating moment, as so many of us explore how to create in public, share your thinking and embrace messy humanity. (Do I think this is partially a response to AI? Absolutely.) The idea that you have to embrace "cringe" to get there is true, but it also does get easier as you get more confident in your own self and ideas.

Updates to The LinkedIn Feed Focusing on Authentic, Relevant Conversations

It’s so funny, I was thinking of posting something very similar to this (although not as eloquent as Austin’s!). My prevailing feeling lately about AI and careers is: “Why CAN’T I do this?” 

This new world explodes (in a good way) the concept of “transferable skills.” In particular, there are heaps of opportunities for word people — and there are no set career paths right now. My wiggly journey has set me up incredibly well for the work I now spend large chunks of my time on: taking fuzzy concepts and turning them into definitions a machine can implement; building systems; evaluating output; working cross-functionally with engineers and PMs; so much more. 

It’s so liberating to break out of those mental (to Austin’s point) and real-life constraints around who’s best for what kind of work. This is all being forged RIGHT NOW. Your experience is just as meaningful as anyone else’s.

I grew up thinking my strengths were already assigned. I was "the writer," the kid who loved English class and lived in stories. So I told myself a familiar story: if I'm good at words, I must be bad at math. If I'm a journalist, I must not be technical. If I'm creative, I must not belong in science or tech.

Those labels felt harmless, but they subtly shaped what I believed I was capable of. They made entire fields feel off-limits before I ever stepped into them.

Then I started working in AI. And suddenly the line I'd drawn between "creative" and "technical" disappeared. My storytelling instincts made the tech clearer and more human. My systems thinking made my creative work sharper and more structured. My journalism background (curiosity, pattern-spotting, explaining complexity) turned out to be a technical skill all along.

I didn't have to trade one identity for another. I just had to stop treating them like opposites.

This is a lesson I often share with other young professionals: the boxes you were put into early on don't have to define your career. As early as grade school, we're sorted into "the artsy one" or "the math one" — labels that can quietly become limits.

But the future, especially in AI, belongs to multi-hyphenate thinkers. People who can build AND explain. Imagine AND execute. Hold logic AND empathy.

You don't have to pick a lane. You can be both creative and technical, and that combination can actually be your edge.

Meet the humans that help shape LinkedIn’s feed everyday

So LinkedIn let me ask their execs some questions

Here's official info on # of posts per day, links in posts, 3rd party tools, video, and more!

1. LINKS IN POSTS ARE NOT ALGORITHMICALLY PUNISHED.
Us social folks always assume platforms will do anything to stop us from putting links in posts. The thinking: they must wanna keep us on their social networks, not clicking out, right? But LinkedIn confirmed they do not algorithmically throttle posts with links.

If your post with a link isn't getting engagement? It's probably just not that compelling for your audience, or comes off a little too promotional / spammy. But don't blame LinkedIn!

2. DOES POSTING TOO LITTLE OR TOO MUCH HURT YOUR CONTENT?
Nope! Every single time you post on LinkedIn, the algorithm treats it as new content, regardless of how often you post—you can post multiple times per day, or a few times a week, the algorithm views it all the same! BUT, one caveat—they specifically noted that LinkedIn tends to have higher "fatigue" than other social networks, meaning your audience might not wanna see your face / brand as often as they do on other social networks. Play around with what works for you.

3. 3RD PARTY TOOLS ARE NOT ALGORITHMICALLY PUNISHED!
One of the longest social rumors: that scheduling tools hurt your content performance. NOPE. However you post your content or engage with LinkedIn is okay with LinkedIn—with one major exception. They're cracking down on automated comments and spammy behaviors.

4. HASHTAGS ARE DIRECTIONAL GUIDES
So yes, hashtags can help your content get to the right people, but like every social network, they don't increase your reach. Think of hashtags like a steering wheel, not a gas pedal.

5. WILL VIDEO BE PART OF LINKEDIN'S FUTURE?
They say yes! Though they caveat that it's part of an overall social network that will support all sorts of formats and content types, and that us creators should try all types! This isn't an Instagram situation where it's all Reels now all the time.

6. WILL LINKEDIN HAVE A CREATOR FUND OR START PAYING CREATORS?
We got a smile and confirmation that they're looking into different ways to compensate creators, and that we'll hear more soon!

Think about a content strategy that leans into the human element, real-world credibility and experiences. When information is so accessible, what does your audience need from you?

The year is 2021. Life’s good. 

Your blog post is ranking #1 on Google and you’ve got the featured snippet. 

Traffic is steady, leads are coming in, and your distribution strategy is mostly SEO. 

ChatGPT doesn’t exist yet. AI overviews don’t exist. Your main competitor is another blog post targeting the same keyword.

You find a decent-volume keyword, write a solid “what is” or “how to” post, optimize your H2s, add a few internal links, and call it a day.

Fast forward a few years.

That same “what is” post that used to drive 20,000 visits a month can now be answered directly on the search results page. The user gets what they need without ever clicking through. Ranking is no longer the only goal. 

Content still matters, but the bar is so much higher.

Now the real questions look more like this:

•	Does this topic deserve to exist beyond an AI summary?
•	Does it reflect real experience, proprietary insight, or a clear point of view?
•	Does it build authority and trust?
•	Where will people see this content, beyond Google search?

Content used to be largely about driving traffic. Increasingly, it’s about building credibility in an ecosystem where information is cheap and instantly generated.

That requires a different level of strategy than “find keyword, write post, publish.”

Anyone else think it’s wild how much has changed in a relatively short space of time?

This idea of org charts and career paths looking like an ecosystem or network — rather than a pyramid — jibes with something I was thinking about this morning, after talking with Rebecca Casey and her class of MSc Digital Business students at Newcastle University Business School. 

The individuals and teams that are most successful think about end-to-end product development. This is a core part of the "full-stack builder" approach (https://lnkd.in/gUt6sXgv) Aneesh Raman mentioned. But even aside from being able to execute or guide a project from soup to nuts*, I think it also means imbuing a sense of responsibility to understand the entire lifecycle or ecosystem. 

For example, in media: There's a difference between a journalist who writes a piece, then passes it off to audience/circulation/social teams to distribute, and a journalist who integrates distribution into their piece planning. Rebecca brought up similar examples in healthcare, where silos impede progress of the larger effort.

There's a subtle but important distinction between "I can do it all" and "I understand it all." AI enables both, but companies and teams can unlock a lot of value through structures, processes and cultures that empower people to understand as well as execute. I think that's where we'll see more web-like systems within businesses as we figure out how to balance employee specialism and generalism.

There's a lot of talk these days about what AI will do to the shape of organizations. The traditional org chart pyramid, many believe, will take on more of the shape of a diamond—growing narrow at the bottom as entry-level jobs get hollowed out while remaining wide around the middle, with veteran workers who've developed expertise to help manage all the agents.

But Iain Roberts, Airbnb's global head of people and culture—and a designer himself who previously worked at IDEO and Ford—sees a different shape. Organizations, he told me at Charter and The San Francisco Standard's Leading with AI Summit on Tuesday with LinkedIn's Aneesh Raman, are "moving away from structural scaffolding of spans and layers to something that feels much more like an ecosystem or a network." More like a web, I asked? "Yes - it's a network of small, highly autonomous teams that actually are focused on the most important customer problems."

Roberts and Raman talked about how organizational shapes are changing, their own non-linear careers, the development of new jobs in their organizations (full-stack "builders" at LinkedIn and roles that treat HR like a product at Airbnb), and how their organizations are talking about career ladders when the traditional pyramid is being reshaped. "The ladder's done," said Raman. "Think about this more like a climbing wall. ... Worry about what you're doing today to get better at the tools that you're using and get better at defining your unique curiosity and capability."

What actually is "social media" anymore? In today's digital landscape, it's everything and nothing. 

It's morphed into something more like cultural infrastructure — and a playbook for attention (and retention) that's been copied by a zillion other apps and platforms.
