I didn’t set out to become an email retention expert.

When people say email “doesn’t work anymore,” it’s usually because one of these steps is missing.
 
Here’s how I think about it, step by step.
 
Step 1: Start with quality leads
If the wrong people enter your list, everything downstream suffers.
Focus on attracting people who actually want your product, not anyone who’ll trade an email for a discount.
 
Step 2: Segment your audience
Not everyone should receive the same message.
Use behaviour, interests, and lifecycle stage to decide who sees what.
Relevance is where returns come from.
 
Step 3: Send emails people want to open
Concept beats tricks.
If the angle isn’t interesting, no subject line hack will save it.
Timing and intent matter more than clever wording.
 
Step 4: Optimize for clicks
Make action easy.
Clear CTAs, visible above the fold, with copy that naturally leads people there.
 
Step 5: Use automation properly
Welcome, abandoned cart, post-purchase, winback.
These aren’t “advanced.” They’re foundational.
Build them once, then keep refining.
 
Step 6: Clean your list
Inactive subscribers weaken your signals.
Prune regularly to protect deliverability.
 
Step 7: Test, learn, adjust
Let data decide, not ego.
Keep what works. Kill what doesn’t.
 
Do this consistently and email stops feeling “hard” and becomes one of the most profitable levers in the business.
