Regal Gentleman, born out of a bad haircut, and now a side-hustle, is an award-winning men’s grooming D2C, e-commerce and educational company. Our vision was to eliminate the complexity from men’s grooming experiences, and I am the player that steered the ecommerce and digital strategy that now attracts over 200,000 organic website visits/month. 

I created a vision, plan and action that resulted in a social media and content strategy, and video series that attracts 2million+ YouTube views/month. Is this the most dangerous page in Klaviyo? 

For far too long, the understanding around this page has caused confusion. 

And I’ve noticed a recent trend where email marketers boast about it.

90+ = we're saviours 🦸

70 or below = this is what you should not do 😔

The issue is that this page is largely guesswork and outdated. 

Let's break this down: 

1️⃣ Klaviyo can’t report on true deliverability

Klaviyo doesn’t have direct visibility into Gmail, Microsoft, or Apple inbox placement.

So when it reports a “low” spam rate, there’s a high chance that isn’t the full picture.

That’s why tools like Google Postmaster exist.

And why inbox placement testing tools are so popular.

2️⃣ Some of the benchmarks are misleading

A click rate under 1.2% doesn’t automatically mean you have a deliverability problem.

An unsubscribe rate of over 0.30% doesn’t mean you end up in spam.

What this has led to is email marketers chasing a 90+ score.

While missing what’s actually happening.

Usually a slow decline in unique monthly clicks.

And still no real idea of true deliverability health. 

Now, don’t get me wrong. Klaviyo is a BEAST.

This page has done a great job raising awareness around deliverability.

But it needs better education around what it can and can’t tell you.

It's great as a rough indicator.

But not as the truth. 

I honestly don't know why Klaviyo doesn't purchase one of the inbox placement tools. 

And offer their customers access to a full 360' deliverability analysis. 

I think that would be an incredible value-adding feature for the Klaviyo ecosystem.

Running a business and being a new parent is tough.

My sleep has taken such a dive that Tom Daley would score me all 10s.

And I just don’t have the time to do everything I’d like to do.

But there have been some business positives.

Saying no to the wrong clients is so much easier now.

Before, I’d often ignore my gut when I knew a client wasn’t right.

Usually for one of two reasons:

1) An obsession with hitting financial goals meant my self-respect got left at the dry cleaners.

2) A weird belief that if I said no too many times, the opportunities would stop.

But now it’s simple.

How can I trade giggles and baby cuddles for a client who doesn’t respect my time or capacity?

It’s a non-negotiable.

So thank you to my son.

You’ve made me a more efficient business owner.

And given me a completely new part of life to appreciate.

I love you ❤️

This year, I move down to 4 days per week.

Thursdays have officially become “Daddy Day”.

Having the ability to do this is something I’ll always be grateful for.

I love my work.

But building a life that isn’t only work feels even better ❤️

P.S. You know what would be amazing next. 

If this could somehow highlight when two different flows overlap each other to help brands build a more aligned customer journey.

The repeat customer rate in Shopify is very misleading.

I had a call with a beauty brand last week, and they were confused. 

“Our repeat customer rate over the last 12 months is 36%, but we’re still feeling pressure from paid ads and profit.”

Here’s the issue:

Shopify’s repeat customer rate includes everyone who has ever ordered more than once.

But in most cases, the real uplift happens between the 1st and 2nd purchase.

That’s where you start to see meaningful uplift in LTV and margin, and where pressure on CAC actually eases.

I ran a Lifetimely audit for this brand, and the picture looked very different.

Their 1st–2nd purchase rates were:

- 8.6% in the first 30 days
- 14% in the first 90 days
- 18% in the first 365 days

That’s a long way from 36%.

So if you’re using Shopify’s repeat customer rate as a north star, take it with a pinch of salt.

Break retention down by each stage of the customer journey.

That’s where the real data lives.

And where the real optimisation opportunities are.

One of my favourite reviews last year when working with the team at NAYDAYA ❤️

The recent advice around unsubscribes is dangerous.
 
Since Gmail made unsubscribing easier, this has become a hot topic.
 
A lot of email marketers are rightly saying:
 
"Quality over quantity"
"Unsubscribes are a good thing"
 
And this is factually true.
 
But it's what I call "Isolated channel thinking"
 
And it doesn't look at the broader business impact.
 
Unsubscribes are fine.
 
A negative list growth rate isn't.
 
If list churn is outpacing growth every month, you have a serious problem. 
 
And that is incredibly important to flag.
 
If that continues for a prolonged period of time, it won't be just CRM results that start to drop. 

It will also feed into a drop in business results. 

The good news is that these trends are visible early.

But you have to be willing to surface them and act on them.

If you’re a B2C brand following all the recent advice, just make sure you’re also watching net list growth month by month.
