This is exactly how I’d approach it.

First, I wouldn’t touch ads.

I’d start by understanding buyer intent and decision triggers.

How awareness turns into consideration.
How consideration turns into action.

Because performance marketing isn’t about platforms —
it’s about understanding the FUNNEL!

Next, I’d pick one channel and go deep.
Not to “diversify”.

But to understand signal quality.

>How intent manifests.
>How attribution starts lying once scale kicks in.

Then I’d obsess over the post-click experience.

>Landing page messaging.
>Conversion friction.
>Form depth vs lead quality.

Most beginners optimise CTR before CVR.
That’s backwards.

Traffic without conversion architecture is just leakage.

After that, I’d track decision-making metrics, not vanity ones.

>Conversion velocity.
>Drop-off points.
>Lead-to-close ratio.
>Payback period.

If a metric doesn’t influence budget allocation or creative direction,
it doesn’t matter yet.

Finally, I’d document everything in public.

>Experiments.
>Failed hypotheses.
>Incremental wins.

Because in performance marketing,
proof of work beats certifications.

If I started today, I wouldn’t try to master tools.
I’d master intent mapping, funnel diagnostics, and signal interpretation.

Clear thinking compounds faster than any tactic.

Are you too guilty of changing creatives too early?

A dip in performance shows up, and is your first reaction is:
“Let’s refresh ads.”

But more often than not, creatives aren’t the problem.

Before I touch copy or visuals, I check four numbers.

1. Conversion rate (post-click)

If traffic is converting, the message is landing.
Low CVR usually points to landing page friction, not creative fatigue.

2. Time to conversion

If users are converting slower than usual, intent has dropped.
New creatives won’t fix that.
Better targeting or clearer messaging will.

3. Lead-to-close ratio

If leads are coming but sales aren’t closing, it’s a sales quality issue.
That’s a conversational problem, not a creative one.

4. Frequency or exposure depth

If the same audience has seen the ad too many times, fatigue is real.
This is when new creatives actually help.

Only when these four point to a creative issue do I change ads.

Otherwise, you’re just decorating a broken funnel.

Creatives amplify what already exists.
They don’t fix fundamentals.

I’ve learned this the hard way:

More tools don’t make you better at performance marketing.

Clear thinking does.

Here are the tools that help me think, decide, and fix what’s broken while campaigns are live.

1. Triple Whale
This is my source of truth.

I use it to see:

– which campaigns actually drive revenue
– where conversions look good but don’t hold downstream
– which channels are stealing credit

This tool has stopped me from scaling the wrong things more times than I can count.

2. Microsoft Clarity
This is where landing page performance problems become obvious.

Session recordings.
Heatmaps.
Rage clicks.

When ads bring traffic but conversions don’t move, this tells me why.

3. Miro

This is my thinking layer.

I map:
– funnels
– intent levels
– drop-offs
– message handoffs between ads and landing pages

If I can’t explain the flow here, I don’t scale it.

What I don’t use?

Tools that promise instant optimisation without understanding.
Or dashboards that look impressive but don’t change decisions.

Performance marketing isn’t about having more tools.
It’s about using the right ones, at the right moment.

I just killed a campaign that was generating leads at $47 each.

Everyone on the team thought I was insane.

"It's our best performer by cost per lead," they said.

Sure. 

But those leads had a 2% close rate.

Meanwhile, a campaign generating leads at $210 was closing at 31%.

Do the math. 

The "expensive" campaign was giving us customers at $677. 

The "cheap" one? $2,350.


This is the trap most performance marketers fall into. They optimize for the wrong metric because it's easier to measure.

CPL goes down, dashboard looks green, everyone's happy. 

Until sales calls you asking why lead quality is in the bin.

Here's what changed my approach: I stopped looking at marketing metrics in isolation. 

Now I track three things together:

>Blended CAC. 
What does a customer actually cost when you factor in close rates, not just lead gen cost.

>Conversion velocity. 
High-intent leads convert in days. Low-quality ones sit in your CRM for months, inflating your pipeline and wasting sales time.

>LTV alignment. 
A $500 CAC isn't expensive if the customer is worth $8K. A $50 CAC is a disaster if they churn in 60 days.

The best marketers I know aren't the ones hitting the lowest cost per lead. 

They're the ones whose sales team actually wants more of their leads.

Everything else is just vanity metrics with a dashboard.

I switched from ChatGPT to Claude for all my content work last month.

No shade to ChatGPT. It's still in my stack for ideation.

But for writing or editing anything that needs to sound human, Claude just works better.

So here's what I think: 

ChatGPT always felt like it was trying too hard. 

Every response had this eager-to-please energy. 

Lots of "delve" and "unlock" and "leverage." It writes like a LinkedIn influencer who learned English from marketing blogs.

Claude writes like a person!

Same prompts. 

Completely different output. Less fluff, more substance. 

It doesn't default to listicles or motivational speak unless you explicitly ask for it.

The other thing: it argues back.

When I give Claude a weak brief or a lazy prompt, it pushes back. 

It'll say "this angle feels generic" or "do you want me to focus on X or Y?" 

That friction is useful. It forces me to think harder about what I actually want to say.

I can feed it a 3,000-word document and say "rewrite this section to be more direct" and it actually understands the surrounding argument. 

Where I still use ChatGPT: bulk tasks, data formatting, quick research summaries. It's faster for high-volume, low-stakes stuff.

But for anything I'm putting my name on? LinkedIn posts editing, client deliverables feedback, and strategic docs layout? Claude.

If you're still defaulting to ChatGPT for everything, try running the same prompt through both. You'll see what I mean.

Just we need specialists for every different thing, so is the case with AI.

Most people start with the platform:
Google or Meta?
Search or social?

That’s already the wrong starting point.

I start with risk, not reach.

Every budget decision answers three questions first:

What am I trying to achieve?
What can break if this fails?
What are my KPIs?
New campaign or new offer?

Most budget goes where results are QUALITY driven, not where volume is highest.

Because at that stage, data is more valuable than efficiency.

Budget flows to intent-heavy channels.

Places where my target audience thrives:

You can say, Meta for D2C
LinkedIn and Google for B2B

Scaling phase?
I protect what’s working first.

Then I test around it in small, controlled bets.

I don’t split budgets evenly.

I concentrate spend where clarity is highest.

Budgeting in performance marketing isn’t math.
It’s judgment and calculations purely based on data.

And judgment comes from understanding the business, the funnel, and the risk —
not from copying channel splits off the internet.

Brands splurge, with no real results

And wonder- what went wrong

>It’s not bad creatives.
>It’s not the wrong platform.
>It’s not even high CPCs.

The real cost comes from scaling before clarity.

Most brands see something “working” and rush to pour money in.

>A few conversions.
>A decent CTR.
>One good week.

So they scale.

But they never stop to ask:

>Why is this converting?
>Who is it really working for?
>What part of the funnel is doing the heavy lifting?

That’s when spend goes up… and efficiency quietly disappears.

Performance marketers know this:

Early performance is often fragile.

It’s driven by a narrow pocket of intent.

Not a scalable system.

When you scale without understanding:

– intent collapses
– lead quality drops
– sales teams lose trust
– budgets get blamed

The expensive part isn’t wasted spend.
It’s the wrong learning.

The fix is boring, but it works:

>Slow down before you speed up.
>Segment what’s converting.
>Protect the signal.

Scale what you understand, not what just looks good.

Client: "Why did our cost per lead go up this week?"

Me: "Let me check."

Turns out: iOS update changed how conversions are tracked. Our pixel is only seeing 60% of what's happening. The actual CPL didn't change. Our measurement did.

This is performance marketing.

Most clients think the job is creative strategy and media buying. And sure, that's part of it.

But the real work? It's forensic.

Most of my time isn't spent writing ads or launching campaigns. 

It's spent diagnosing why the data doesn't make sense.

> Why did our conversion rate drop 30% overnight? (Someone moved the CTA button in a site update.)

> Why is our best audience suddenly not converting? (Competitor launched a promotion we didn't know about.)

> Why are we getting tons of clicks but zero conversions? (Bot traffic from a placement we didn't exclude.)

The best performance marketers I know aren't just good at buying media. 

They're good at interrogating systems. They know where tracking breaks. 

They understand what attribution tools actually measure versus what they claim to measure. 

They can tell the difference between a campaign problem and a data problem.

Because here's the thing: your dashboard will lie to you. Platforms want you to think they're performing better than they are.

If you just optimize based on what you see in the interface, you'll make expensive mistakes.

The job is equal parts marketer and detective. 

You have to trust the data enough to make decisions, but stay skeptical enough to question it when something feels off.

Clients see the strategy deck and the performance report. 

They don't see the three hours I spent ruling out twelve different hypotheses before I found the real issue.

That's not a complaint. It's just the job.

And honestly? The diagnostic work is what makes it interesting. 

Anyone can spend money on ads. 

Not everyone can figure out why the numbers don't add up and fix it before the budget gets torched.

People don’t buy products. They buy progress!

I first came across this in the Jobs To Be Done framework by Tony Ulwick

And once you see marketing through that lens, it’s hard to unsee.

Before this, I thought marketing was about positioning features.

>Or highlighting benefits.
>Or saying the right things at the right time.

But this idea reframed everything.

People aren’t clicking ads because of clever copy.

They’re clicking because something in their current state feels broken.

They want to move from where they are to where they want to be.

That changed how I look at campaigns.

Instead of asking:
“What should this ad say?”

I now ask:

“What job is the customer hiring this product to do right now?”
"What problem am I solving?"
"What makes us different?"

When you get that right:
– messaging becomes clearer
– targeting feels natural
– funnels stop fighting intent

It also explains why “great ads” sometimes fail.

They’re well-written, but they solve the wrong problem.

Good marketing doesn’t convince.
It aligns.

Once I started building campaigns around progress, not persuasion,
performance stopped feeling random.
