I've been building businesses from the ground up for 12+ years. I am a recent Dad of 2 boys under 2.5! My work informs one goal…. to spend more time with my family. 

But, I wasn’t like this always. I ground myself to a nub for nearly 9 years and in 2019 I closed a business, I didn’t exit, I closed it. I failed. 

I was completely burnt out. I wasn’t just tired. I was medically burnt out, a doctor said, “you need to stop or you’re going to die”. I was 32.

Lots of innovation, and the future of food and supplementation is heading in a very specific functional direction. 

Taste is still the biggest driver in getting repeat customers, but strong macro and functional call outs are driving the initial purchase.

With that said, Azadeh is leading the charge sharing the functional health info we all need to know and implement into daily lives.

These aren’t quick fixes, nor are they unrealistic actions. Most of what she shares can be implemented with a little bit of awareness and consistent action.

Epic times at Expo West made possible by the incredible people building brands in CPG.

Had the pleasure of catching up with tons of friends, new and old, and snacking more than I usually do.

Saw tons of protein-packed products (both drinks and snacks), hydration and healthy sodas. These categories are exploding and becoming staples for consumers - and I think the demand is in line with the supply of strong brands with great products.

The question for all of these brands - how are you standing out?

That's the fun (and hard) part - if you don't stand out from the crowd, you may not be at the next show.

Why did it take so long?

Feedback, product dev, iteration, improvements and new releases. Pack size and variety changes. 

Understanding what our customers really like, and delivering incredible flavour without compromising on the benefits.

We've branched off into 2 separate lines of hydration depending on the use-case, with both being very important:

Had the pleasure of connecting with the legendary Jack Armstrong this morning after The University of British Columbia Thunderbird Scholarship Breakfast.

During his keynote, he shared a few very important lessons/reminders:

- High achievement takes place when there are high expectations.
- The 5 P's - Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance
- Do not mistake activity for achievement
- Watch your habits, as they become your character, and you character becomes your legacy
- Don't get addicted to the destination. Where else would you rather be than where you are right now? Be present and find the beauty in the moments you're experiencing rather than what's next.

It's rare that you meet someone of status/fame that is genuine and is exactly the same in person as they are on camera. 

Grateful for this connect and the lessons learned here.

This is something often forgotten in the sea of tasks, to-do lists, strategy and execution when you're running a business.

This past week was an awesome opportunity to get our team together for games, dinners and connection. These are moments that go way beyond Slack messages and emails.

Axe throwing, super mario bros and some good laughs helped us hit the ground running for big tradeshow weekend, a time we had 3 simultaneous events at No Days Wasted®

This took serious coordination from our team to pull off, but couldn't be achieved if there's burnout.

Ultimately, lock-in and work hard, but build a team that you'd like to throw axes and play nostaligic video games with! 

Having fun is part of the job description.

Got to hang with the legend Gary Vaynerchuk, and it was very inspiring, but not in the way you might think...

You probably think he said something profound, or gave great advice, or had meaningful insights - which he did. 

But, one thing that you may not notice about Gary from social media is that he is in a league of his own when it comes to active listening.

He is hands down the best listener I've ever met.

To be able to be fully present with a complete stranger (myself) and take in everything I had to say, process it, and give truly thoughtful responses is an art. 

It also means he probably does this with everyone he meets. Not many are able to pull this off.

You learn the most by listening, which enables you to connect with more and more people and keep learning. 

It's a beautiful feedback loop.

Driving trial is the key to crushing it on shelf with the bigger retail players.

If you don't have a strategy to drive trial locally, it's going to be hard for any emerging brand to achieve its velocity goals. 

On the left is a photo a family member sent me of our products being sold at a local cafe, just down the road from the local Safeway (see right). 

This is one of the most popular coffee shops with very high foot traffic - premium drinks, quality ingredients, delectable pastries - exactly the brand association NDW aligns with, given our premium ingredient stack.

While the sales from this store are good, they kickstart the "Trial to repeat/bulk purchase" fly wheel. Customers see us, snag a packet, and later on when they come across us in the grocery store, they're already familiar and set on what they're going to buy.

Another way to drive trial is demos - get out and sample and get people trying what you offer. Have a new flavour? Set up a demo on site of your accounts and get people trying. 

If people love it, that's great - you'll sell lots. 

If feedback isn't great, you now have actionable feedback.

Either way, it's a win.

Moral of the story - make sure you have a strategy to drive trial in and around your biggest retail partners. 

Build that out alongside retail distribution, and the sales numbers will tell the story.
