“How much does it cost to build an app?” 

I’ve heard that a hundred times.

Usually, plus a hopeful pause as if waiting for a magic number.

But the truth is the cost to build an app isn’t in the code. 
It’s in everything in front of and behind it.

Years ago, a founder came to us with a “simple” app idea. 
He listed out all the reasons it would be easy. 
Basic features, very little complexity. 

What he didn’t realize was that when you factor in user flows, integrations, design, and back-end logic, “simple” became $120K of REAL work. 

Not because we over-built the app.

So what does it really cost to build an app? 
No-one puts this reality in their ads: 

Basic MVP: $30K—$50K.

"Hiring own designers will be cheaper and faster.”

But let’s take a closer look at the numbers. 
And they paint a different picture. 

✦ Time-to-hire is slow. 
The average time it takes to hire a UX/UI Designer in the U.S. is 41 days (LinkedIn Hiring Report). 
Senior designers can sometimes ask for 55-60 days of time-to-hire.
Adding your time to onboard them and evaluate their cultural fit means artificially delaying revenue by 3-4 months, even before you feel it’s safe to assign any work to them. 

Dedicated design teams?
Kickoff happens in 1–2 weeks with established workflows already in place.

✦ Total cost is higher than simply salary. 
The average U.S. UX/UI designer earns roughly $85,000-110,000/year. 
That’s just salary. 
And if you add other costs like benefits and payroll taxes, equipment, software licenses, and office overhead, you can expect to pay significantly more than 30-40% (all-in) to employ any individual. 

That would mean it would cost about $120,000-150,000 per designer, per year. 

And let’s not even approach whether you would ask them to dig deeper as your business grows and needs: most in-house teams would need:

 - Product designer
 - Brand designer 
 - UX researcher 
 - UI Designer 

That means you can be committing $500,000-600,000+ annually to a design team. 

Dedicated teams? 
You are only paying for the deliverables, not overhead, and you can also scale flexibly as needed by your business. 

✦ Next, the hidden risks of internal hiring. 
Design turnover is high: UX/UI attrition sits around 20% in tech (UXPA survey).
So, if you lose one designer on a project, significant delays can occur, since re-hiring and onboarding process could add many months. 

With a dedicated design team, you will likely hire sufficient designers so you have some level of expertise spread across the role(s) to mitigate downtime and reduce single points of risk or failure. 

In-house design isn’t “bad.”
But it’s slower, riskier, and more expensive to get outcomes at speed.

Dedicated teams let you:
1. Scale up or down instantly.
2. Access specialists without hiring 4+ roles.
3. Get results faster without HR bottlenecks.
4. The real cost of in-house isn’t salary.

It’s the delay, the overhead, and the risk of burnout or attrition.

Ever worked with a “perfect” team on paper… 

and still felt something was missing?

When companies compare dedicated teams, they usually look at hard skills.
Tech stack. Experience. Case studies.
All of that matters.

However, through experiences of working on different projects, I’ve learned that soft skills can enhance or crush collaboration.

Here’s my reasoning:

✦ A team that listens intently saves weeks of wasted "incorrect" work.
✦ A team that communicates well removes stress during a tight schedule. 
✦ A team that cares treats your product as if it is their product, including the details.

Companies hire “tier one talent” then watch the project stall, break down, or go haywire because the collaborative force disintegrated.

Others are successful, not necessarily because the scope of work was at all easier, but because the team was patient, focused, empathetic and driven. 

So, when you are choosing a dedicated team, do not ask: 
“Can they code/design this for me?” 
Ask: “Will they care enough to understand us?”

The technology is responsible for building the product. 
However, the people are responsible for building the partnership.

“$5K for a full app” should set off alarm bells.

I’ve seen founders get burned by quotes that sound too good to be true.

And here’s the reality: they usually are.

A credible app budget runs anywhere from $50K–$250K+, depending on scope and complexity. 

At $5K, what you’re really buying is a prototype, a landing MVP, or a template, not a production-grade product.

The hidden costs show up later:

✦ No discovery → scope creep and endless change requests.
✦ No QA → your users become the testers.
✦ No maintenance plan → apps break as OS versions and APIs update.
✦ No IP clarity → some “cheap shops” keep the repo keys, locking you in.
✦ No security → exposing you to compliance fines or breaches (the average costs $4.9M globally).

So what does a serious proposal include?

1. Discovery: user flows, integrations, edge cases.
2. Delivery plan: milestones, QA, release strategy.
3. Security & compliance baked in.
4. Ongoing ops & maintenance plan.

🚩 If a vendor quotes $5K for the whole thing, don’t think “deal.” 
Think “demo.”
The real bill will come later, in rewrites, downtime, or lost trust.

The smarter play: if budget is tight, scope a small, clear MVP with defined limits and a real path to production. 

That way, your “cheap” start doesn’t become an expensive rewrite.

That’s brutal, but fixable.

What breaks trust?

1. Generic, salesy copy.
2. Outdated case studies.
3. Over-promised proof.
4. Hidden pricing or vague offers.
5. Broken UX or bad mobile experience.

These don’t just hurt perception, they kill the pipeline before the first call.

What builds trust?

1. Real results from clients (numbers, logos, testimonials).
2. Fresh content (at least once every 90 days).
3. Visible experts and thought leaders. 
4. Transparency through pricing or testimonials. 
5. UX that is seamless across devices. 

Quick audit (run it today):
→ Does your site have a case study newer than last quarter?
→ Can a buyer find pricing in under 30 seconds?
→ Is your “Book a Demo” page error-free on mobile?
→ Are your testimonials real, recent, and specific?

If the answer was "no" to any of these, that is the "why". The website is the first proof you can provide regarding what you promised.
If you repair the leaks, trust can develop.

A few years ago, I worked with a product team that doubled its user base in six months.

Great problem to have until everything started breaking.

Buttons didn’t fit new workflows.
Layouts collapsed under more data.
