My wife and I took on a church when we were living in Auckland which we then pastored for a number of years. I had been looking to get more involved in Digital Business and hadn't planned on pastoring a church. The existing leaders at the time stepped down and we found ourselves with a group of over 100 people who wanted to see the church continue. The focus of the church was to help people Encounter God, Find Community, Discover Purpose and Make a Difference. 

There's a bit of a story involved but in short, we took things on and journeyed together. You never know where life will take you and this has been another chapter to our story that we are very grateful for. 

Part of stepping back into business was that we felt we were to care for people for a season and then transition to new leaders. 

For me the desire to work with people in business remained. Working out that transition of an organisation and moving into this new season has been one of the most challenging and rewarding in my life. 

I've learned a lot about big seasons, identity, courage and purpose. Many more lessons to be learned & if you're in a season of change....keep going, and have good people around you. :)

In 2020, I launched my first business and focused solely on LinkedIn to get clients. I dedicated hundreds of hours to optimising my profile, content, connections, DMs, and webinars to grow the business.

I landed clients within weeks BUT....I was trying a bit of everything. 

- Connections when I thought about it 
- Posts when I felt inspired 
- Lots of DMs without a strategy 
- Relying on inspiration and effort 

I needed to turn it into a repeatable system.

So I started refining my systems and processes to focus on the 20% that gets 80% of the results. 

And it worked. Others started asking how I was doing it. 

They shared their struggles:

Some of the best feedback I’ve had on LinkedIn has come from people who’ve never liked a single post.

They’ve never commented. Never reshared.

But then they’ll come up to me in person and say, “I’ve been loving what you’re sharing on LinkedIn", or "you must be really busy, I see you all over LinkedIn" (that one sometimes does make me do a silent internal cringe)

This happens all the time to me, and more importantly to my clients with the posting we do together.

There’s a whole audience of people quietly reading your posts. They just don’t make themselves known.

I call them your silent audience (I used to call them lurkers but that feels a bit mean) and this silent audience is much bigger than you think.

In fact, most people on LinkedIn fall into this category. Around 75% of users are what we’d call passive or silent.

They scroll, they read, they take it all in but they don’t click the like button and they'd never leave a comment.

But they’re watching.

And more importantly, they’re forming an impression of you.

They’re noticing what you care about. How you think. Whether your approach feels useful or considered or trustworthy.

So when you go to post and feel like “What’s the point? No one’s engaging,” just remember, you’re not writing for likes.

You’re writing for the people who are quietly paying attention. The ones who are still deciding if you’re someone they’d want to work with or learn from.

And often, they’re the ones who’ll reach out later because they’ve already been following along and finally they feel like you're the one for them or they know, like a trust you enough for the initial conversation.

If your posts aren’t getting much visible engagement, it doesn’t mean they’re not working. You might just be speaking to the quietest part of your network and that part is often the most valuable.

Have you ever wondered how flowers are like sharing posts with the people in your network?

Just down the road from us, one of our neighbours has created this lovely little front garden. We live out in the country, and she’s planted sunflower seeds right on the roadside, not even in view of her house. 

You’d think it would be something she’d want to see for herself every day, but no, it’s for everyone else who drives by. Over the months, they’ve grown into these beautiful, bright sunflowers that are such a joy to see.

Some of your LinkedIn content can be like those sunflowers.

You plant the seed by putting a post out there. You might not always see it blooming, and you might not even know who’s driving past and smiling when they see it. 

But it might brighten someone’s day. It might help someone feel a bit less stuck. Or just give them something to think about.

Not all your content needs to be, or even should be, for visibility or likes or leads. Sometimes it’s just about being generous with your knowledge and expertise.

One of the most common things people do on LinkedIn is hit the repost button on a company update and leave it at that.

No comment, no context, just the post, floating there in their network’s feed.

I tell my clients that doing this is a bit like forwarding an email to your whole contact list without adding a single sentence about why you’re sharing it.

Here’s why I think that’s a problem:

People don’t always know how to interpret silence.

If you repost something without saying anything, your network is left wondering is this relevant to me? Why are you sharing it? What do you want me to take from this?

And because they’re not sure, they often just scroll past.

I've got a theory on why this happens...I don't think it's a confidence issue. It’s more about not knowing what to say.

People don’t want to sound overly promotional, or like you’re just parroting the company line. So you hit repost and hope it helps the algorithm a bit.

Here’s how to fix it:

Next time you share something from your company or organisation, add one or two lines to give us all some context.

You don’t have to write a full post, just a quick note that tells your network why it’s relevant to them.

Here are a few ways to do that:

* Point out something you found genuinely interesting or useful in the post
* Explain why you think it’s worth reading, especially for your network
* Connect it back to something you’ve been hearing in conversations with clients or colleagues

Even a short line like “I’ve had a few people asking about this lately, this article sums it up well” is more helpful than silence.

Before you hit repost, ask yourself "why am I sharing this and how can I make that clear to the people I care about reaching?"
