My wife and I took on a church when we were living in Auckland which we then pastored for a number of years. I had been looking to get more involved in Digital Business and hadn't planned on pastoring a church. The existing leaders at the time stepped down and we found ourselves with a group of over 100 people who wanted to see the church continue. The focus of the church was to help people Encounter God, Find Community, Discover Purpose and Make a Difference. 

There's a bit of a story involved but in short, we took things on and journeyed together. You never know where life will take you and this has been another chapter to our story that we are very grateful for. 

Part of stepping back into business was that we felt we were to care for people for a season and then transition to new leaders. 

For me the desire to work with people in business remained. Working out that transition of an organisation and moving into this new season has been one of the most challenging and rewarding in my life. 

I've learned a lot about big seasons, identity, courage and purpose. Many more lessons to be learned & if you're in a season of change....keep going, and have good people around you. :)

In 2020, I launched my first business and focused solely on LinkedIn to get clients. I dedicated hundreds of hours to optimising my profile, content, connections, DMs, and webinars to grow the business.

I landed clients within weeks BUT....I was trying a bit of everything. 

- Connections when I thought about it 
- Posts when I felt inspired 
- Lots of DMs without a strategy 
- Relying on inspiration and effort 

I needed to turn it into a repeatable system.

So I started refining my systems and processes to focus on the 20% that gets 80% of the results. 

And it worked. Others started asking how I was doing it.

It’s hard to believe that a week ago Alana Swain and I just wrapped up our 15th LinkedIn Local Tauranga event.

When we first started, our goal was simple: create a space where local people could meet, talk and build real connections. 

We hoped it would work and be meaningful for people but we never expected it to grow into what it is now.

Over these 15 events we’ve seen:
* friendships form
* business collaborations happening
* people find clients, mentors and new opportunities
* and conversations that simply wouldn’t have happened online

What I love most is how these events create the perfect mix of in-person connection and ongoing relationship-building online.

You meet someone over coffee at the event… then LinkedIn becomes the place where that relationship develops, slowly and steadily, kind of like a slow-motion networking event. It’s such an effective way to stay on each other’s radar without any pressure.

A huge thank you to our expert AI panel speakers Belinda Thomas, Julian Thompson, Karrina Mountfort and Steve Naudé for such an honest, entertaining, understandable and practical conversation about AI. We all got something from this amazing AI panel line up.

Here's a few takeaways:

* Many businesses are taking a slow, steady approach with AI — using it to support people, not replace them. That intention matters.

* Human oversight is essential. AI only learns what we teach it, and prompting is becoming a real skill we all need to get more deliberate about.

* AI can genuinely improve the client experience when used well, even simple things like transcription tools, so we can stay fully present in meetings, came up as practical wins.

* We are ALL still learning

It was an encouraging discussion. AI isn’t something to fear, but it isn’t something to take lightly either. Like any tool, it needs good judgement, clear boundaries, and a people-first mindset.

I was finishing a 90th birthday cake for my aunty on Saturday morning when I had an "ah ha" and "hmm" moment.

There was quite a mess everywhere. I had everything spread out, sticky fingers and my husband had the "I'm not sure this is going to work" look on his face.

But I knew it was all going to work out and I reminded myself of the 12-tier wedding cake I made for friends and a 50th cake I made for another.

Every time, I start with a clear picture of the final cake and what I want it to look like.

But the process of getting there is always a little organic (and messy).

I gather the ingredients, pull things apart, adjust as I go and somehow it all comes together beautifully in the end.

That's exactly how I work with clients on their LinkedIn presence.

Most people have all the ingredients including the experience, stories, strengths, values, personality.

But they are not sure how to pull everything together in a way that feels natural.

So we start by unpacking things.
What makes you different?
What lights you up?
What you want people to understand about your work?

Then I shape everything into something that genuinely represents you.
Not a template.
Not a cookie-cutter version of someone else.
Your voice, your expertise, your way of helping people.

Here’s what that process usually looks like.
↳ Understanding your strengths and what makes your work meaningful
↳ Pulling apart the ideas that matter most
↳ Turning your stories and skills into clear, simple language
↳ Creating content that sounds like you, not everyone else

The end result always feels like the moment the final layer touches go on the cake.

Everything fits. Everything makes sense. It all looks amazing.
And it reflects the person it was made for.

Which part of your LinkedIn presence feels the hardest at the moment?

A lot of people still think LinkedIn success comes down to “just posting more often”.

It sounds logical because the more you post, the more you’ll be seen - right? Wrong...

The algorithm now rewards quality and relevance, not volume.

Posting every day won’t help if your content feels rushed, repetitive, or out of sync with what your audience actually cares about.

I’ve seen people spend hours trying to post five times a week, only to burn out and stop altogether.
Then I’ve seen others post once or twice a week consistently, with purpose and grow faster because they’ve built genuine trust and rhythm.

For me, the balance looks like this:

I post twice a week and comment every day (mainly weekdays).

That mix keeps me visible without feeling like I’m glued to LinkedIn (and I repurpose some of the posts, about 50% of them, and post them on Facebook and Instagram)

It’s manageable, sustainable, and still leaves room for real work and life outside the platform.

When I work with clients, we always start with one simple question:
“What’s the easiest and most sustainable way for you to show up?”

That’s where strategy meets consistency.

It’s not about feeding the algorithm. It’s about showing up regularly enough that people remember you, and meaningfully that they care.

Here’s what works better now:
↳ Post once or twice a week, but make every post count.
↳ Choose a few content themes and rotate them so your message stays consistent.
↳ Spend more time commenting thoughtfully on other people’s posts, it’s just as powerful as posting yourself. Infact sometimes my comments on other posts get more impressions than my actual posts!

LinkedIn success isn’t about volume. It’s about showing up in a way that feels real and sustainable.
That’s what builds confidence, connection, and momentum.

How often do you find it realistic to post and engage on LinkedIn each week?

In my Done With You monthly sessions, we create a plan that helps you post with purpose, not pressure and keep LinkedIn feeling light, not like another full-time job.

* You can see where I had a few weeks break from posting on LinkedIn. My reach went right down because there were no posts, but it is building up again and the world didin't end. You need to do what is best for you :)

I'm really grateful to have been able to join the Pacific Business Women's Network end of year lunch last week. I ran a LinkedIn workshop for them earlier this year and have been working with several of the women in the group. 

Plus I was actually born in Suva, Fiji. I lived there for the first few years of my life and have been back twice to visit.

I love that there is a really amazing diverse array of groups around Tauranga Moana for business people to be part of. Working on your own, or in a small team can be hard at times. So having others who get it can really make a difference. 

There's a very special energy and vibe with this group of wahine and I'm honoured to have been invited to the lunch. Thank you Marie Roberts for brining everyone together. It really is a magical talent of yours!

We finished by setting some intentions for next year and writing postcards to each other in our pairs that I will be posting out on the 1st June next year to remind us of our intentions, and to encourage us to keep going.
