Today is my birthday.

And instead of telling you what 31 years of life has taught me about B2B marketing... I’d rather look back at what life looked like at 21 vs now.

At 21, I was studying a master’s in marketing.

In all honesty, I did it because I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do.

Marketing sounded like the least boring option out of all the business subjects, and I secretly just wanted to stay in my uni town and live with my best friend.

And instead of leaving with a new perspective or a sense of direction…

I left even more confused and lost.

The next two years were a blur of trying different roles, industries, and possibilities.

Eventually, I landed in a marketing role at a huge events corporation.

But even then, I had this deep gut feeling that there had to be more.

I used to ask myself, “Is this what I see myself doing for the next 30, 40, 50 years?”

And I sat with that feeling for an entire year.

Every day, I’d daydream about what life would look like if I could work on my own terms, from anywhere, with no one to answer to but myself.

Then I basically slapped myself in the face and started doing something about it.

I spent the next 6 months figuring out how to use the skills I had from my job and past experiences and turn them into a business.

And in 2021, I left the comfortable job behind and launched the agency.
I gave myself 6 months to make it work with Delia.

That 6 months turned into 5 years of ups and downs and, ultimately:

- Working with 40+ clients
- Working on 100+ projects
- Generating millions in revenue
- Hiring and contracting 12 people
- Moving to Bali full time
- Adopting a Balinese dog
- Setting up a property business in Bali
- Actually feeling real freedom

All because I followed a gut feeling and had the bravery (or stupidity) to act on it.

I can't imagine what life would be like now if I hadn't.

Co-Founder @ Nude | Stripping the boring out of B2B marketing

A little Friday appreciation post.

I don’t think many agencies can say they genuinely enjoy working with most of their clients.

But right now, we’re lucky.

The clients we have on board are genuinely fun to work with, even when things get tough.

And this week has been hectic, to say the least.

So far, we’ve:

- Launched a pretty risky anti–Black Friday campaign
- Developed 5 funny UGC videos for a SaaS brand
- Fixed a broken tracking issue on Google and Meta
- Revised and finalised two content plans for December
- Designed and built a last-minute 30-page pitch deck
- Run an online workshop to prep a launch strategy

If we had to do all of this with clients who panic or breathe down our necks, it would be a lot harder.

I think we’re in this position because we can’t stand the overly professional corporate nonsense.

If you just build real relationships by being honest, in good moments and bad, everything gets easier on both sides.

Anyway, super grateful for our clients.

P.S. Delia isn’t too bad to work with either, I suppose 🤷‍♂️

The very first thing you should be doing as an early stage founder is outreach.

Not some complex 50-step marketing strategy.

Not trying to convert, but trying to learn.

It’s something I wish I did when we started our business.

Instead, I rushed into trying to market and sign clients before truly understanding the real, and sometimes hidden pain points my audience was facing.

Here’s what we do for clients now, and what you should test:

Step 1:
Build a list of 200 people that match your ICP 1:1.

Step 2:
Connect with them on LinkedIn.

Step 3:
If they accept, skip the BS, be honest and get straight to the point. Tell them why you are reaching out and ask for feedback. Offer free access to what you are building in return for their help.

Step 4:
Follow up and be human.  If they don’t reply, follow up once more and leave the conversation open.

You only need 10-20 people to agree to a 15-minute call.

On those calls, you get foundational clarity on:

- Better messaging
- Real pain points
- Product discovery routes
- Buying objections
- Decision-making triggers
- What actually makes them take action

It sounds like basic human-to-human outreach because it is.

+ it's insanely easy to do. 

Being a normal human and asking for help in return for something they can actually use works far better than people think.

But barely anyone does it.

If someone personally messages me on LinkedIn asking for genuine help on something I could actually use, I will always reply.

P.S. If they don’t accept your LinkedIn request, you can always switch to email.

Hard lesson I’ve learned running the agency...

You get what you pay for, and you pay an even bigger price when you try to do things as cheaply as possible.

Over the past four years, we’ve hired freelancers, contractors, UGC creators, designers, copywriters, media buyers, the lot.

In our first year, we often went for the “cost-effective” option.

More often than not, that meant paying even more later to fix mistakes made along the way.

That doesn’t mean there isn’t incredible talent out there at a lower price point.

But to be honest, most of those people should be charging far more than they do, and it’s the exact reason we raised our prices as an agency.

When we did, none of our clients pushed back. 

Not one.

If you want the best, you’re going to pay a premium.

Pay the premium, or pay the price.

Your choice.

P.S. If you're doing genuinely good work and getting results, please raise your prices. You deserve it, and it's not going to put people off.

If you’ve got a friend starting a business, it takes 15 minutes to:

- Engage with their posts
- Share what they’re building
- Mention it to someone who might be interested

and if it makes sense:

- Test their product/service
- Buy it without asking for a discount
- Give them honest feedback

Speaking as someone who started from zero, that early support means more than people realise.

We actually signed a small client from a referral from a friend and ex-colleague. 

Support your friends.

Unless the idea is genuinely terrible. 

Then maybe… support them emotionally instead.

There’s a huge opportunity B2B businesses are completely overlooking.

Hiring a full-time content creator.

Here's solid proof that this works:

We’ve been working with a B2B SaaS that grew from $900k ARR to $3m ARR over the last two years.

During that time, we tried every kind of creator setup imaginable:

- UGC ads
- Product reviews
- Demos and walkthroughs
- Podcast-style content
- Q&A videos

You name it, we tested it.

The problem is that we cycle through a lot of creators and budget.

But here’s where things got interesting.

In January, we signed a long-term deal with one creator who consistently outperformed 90 percent of everyone else we’d worked with.

They do all of the above, and more.

What's better is that the results keep improving month after month.

Here’s why I think it works:

1. B2B buying cycles are long so a familiar face keeps you top of mind
2. People are resonating with the creator we are using
3. People are seeing the same person throughout the buying journey
4. The creator learns the product deeply, so the content hits harder
5. The creator naturally improves over time
6. The brand starts to feel human, not corporate

And honestly, people just like buying from people they recognise.

The secret is finding a creator that your audience truly resonates with.

If you’re constantly cycling through creators, or if you don’t have a camera-shy founder, this is definitely something you should think about.

LinkedIn is full of personal preferences disguised as 'expert advice'.

You shouldn’t listen to most of it.

Here are a few of my favourites:

"If you send a voice note in a DM I'll block you"
"I will never reply to a cold email"
"I won't read long LinkedIn posts"
"I've never bought something because of an ad"
"If you call me and tell me it's a cold call, I'll hang up"
"I will instantly delete your email if it's long"

Then they offer absolutely no proof or alternative that actually works.

This causes people to freeze and start thinking that “everything is dead”.

But what one person hates might stand out to the exact person you want to reach.

And while you sit around worrying about what people think of you, there are 100 other people testing, iterating, and growing.

Don’t live inside someone else’s pet peeves.

Or your own.

If I only ran marketing campaigns based on what I personally like and respond to, I’d be out of business.
