We're all dopamine addicts. 

The question is what kind.

Fast dopamine is easy. Scroll, click, swipe. The hit is instant. The crash is guaranteed. And five minutes later, you're back for more.

Slow dopamine is different. It’s the reward you feel after finishing a long book. 

The pride in cooking a meal from scratch. The glow from a real conversation. It asks more of you, but the reward actually lasts.

Here’s the problem:
Most of us are so hooked on fast dopamine that slow dopamine barely registers anymore. 

Silence feels uncomfortable. 
Boredom feels painful.

If something isn’t instantly stimulating, we bail.

The solution isn’t to try and go cold turkey.
It's to slowly change where you’re sourcing your dopamine from.

This week, pick one fast dopamine habit and replace it with something from this list. 

Just one swap. 

Instead of scrolling before bed, read a chapter. 
Instead of background noise on your walk, try silence. Instead of takeout, cook one meal.

Your brain will resist. It'll tell you this is boring, that you need your phone, that you should quit. That's not failure. That's withdrawal.

Stay with it anyway.

Then next week, replace another one. And another. 

You're not trying to be perfect. You're trying to retrain your system to recognize what satisfaction actually feels like.

The shift happens slowly. But it does happen.

I used to think leading meant directing everything.

Turns out, people thrive when you let them own it.

In the past I’d give detailed instructions, check in constantly, and make sure everything was done “the right way.”

It drained me - and everyone around me. 

Then someone on my team took a work package I’d been overthinking and delivered something far better than what I had in mind.

All I did was give them the goal and step back.
That’s when I realized when someone owns the outcome they start thinking differently. 

They care. They go extra mile.

Here’s how I build trust that creates ownership:

1/ Start with the why, not the how
↳ Explain the goal and why it matters. Skip the step-by-step instructions.

2/ Set clear expectations upfront
↳ Define what success looks like. Be specific about deliverables and deadlines.

3/ Give resources, not directions
↳ Ask "What do you need to succeed?" instead of "Here's exactly what to do."

4/ Step back and resist the urge to jump in
↳ Let them figure it out. Challenges build ownership.

5/ Celebrate the outcome, not the method
↳ If they hit the goal their way, that's a win. Period.

The less I control the how, the better the results become. People exceeded expectations I didn’t know I had.

Leadership isn’t about control.

It’s about empowerment.

Track when you feel most focused, creative, or drained for 3 days. Then schedule tasks accordingly: deep work during peaks, admin during dips.

2️⃣ Build in micro-recovery
Between meetings or tasks, take 5 minutes to step away. Walk, breathe, stretch. Small resets prevent big crashes.

3️⃣ Audit your energy drains
What tasks, people, or habits leave you depleted? Eliminate, delegate, or batch them when your energy is higher.

4️⃣ Protect your morning momentum
Don't start your day reacting (emails, Slack, social media). Start with intention. One meaningful task before the chaos begins.

5️⃣ End your day deliberately
Close loops. Write down tomorrow's top 3 priorities. Your brain needs permission to stop. Give it that signal.

I just spent a week in the Andes with a shaman, two medicine women, a lot of alpacas and a group of seekers.

Very limited wifi. No meetings. No notifications.

Just ancient philosophy, connecting with Pachamama (the Incan earth mother), volunteering with orphans and shelter dogs, teaching English to local kids, and standing at the awe inspiring Machu Picchu.

Through this retreat, I reconnected to three principles from ancient Incan philosophy and their worship of Pachamama that were a great reminder:

- Reciprocity with nature. Take what you need, give back more than you took.
- Community over individual gain. Your success means nothing if your neighbour struggles.
- Presence over productivity. Being fully here matters more than checking off another task.

Without my phone constantly pulling my attention, I actually felt these principles instead of just understanding them intellectually.

I watched the way nature operates in perfect reciprocity. How the mountains give shelter, the rivers give life, and everything cycles back.

I saw how the community here shows up for each other without checking what's in it for them first.

And I experienced what it feels like to be completely present. Not half-listening while thinking about my next task. Actually here.

I am leaving the Andes and Peru feeling refreshed and reinvigorated. Not tired, but relaxed. Actually energised. Turns out disconnecting isn't just rest. It's fuel.

We think we're connecting through our devices. But being disconnected from technology and connected to nature for a week showed me how backwards that is.

I'm not saying delete your apps and move to the mountains. 

I'm saying maybe we need to remember what it feels like to just be somewhere. Fully. 

To feel the earth under our feet instead of the phone in our hand.
That's where the real connection lives.

Last night, I hit send on something 15 years in the making.

My manuscript for "The Wellbeing Advantage" is now with my publisher.

Writing this book has been one of the most challenging projects of my career. Juggling it alongside global consulting work, I found myself living the exact paradox I'm writing about.

I almost burnt out writing a book on how not to burn out.

That irony wasn't lost on me. It reinforced everything I've learned about wellbeing in high-pressure environments.

Here's what drives this work:
- Wellbeing isn't a nice-to-have perk or a checkbox exercise.
- It's a fundamental driver of safety and performance in organisations.
- When leaders treat it as such, everything changes. Teams perform better. Safety improves. People thrive.

There is 15 years of research and real-world application showing this connection in my book. It's time organisations invested accordingly.

There are some editing rounds ahead from my publisher, but I'm incredibly proud of what we've created.

Yesterday I had the honour to speak at the Industrial Safety Summit in Baku, Azerbaijan. 

The Ministry of Emergency Situations and AISA - Azerbaijan Industrial Safety Association brought together some great speakers to explore a very relevant question: Are we at a tipping point with AI in safety?

My general thought: Yes, but not in the way most people think.

The future of safety isn't AI replacing humans. It's AI + HOP + Wellbeing working together.

AI detects patterns humans can't see across vast datasets.

Human & Organisational Performance makes sense of those patterns through context, intuition, and understanding of work-as-done.

Wellbeing enables humans to actually act on what they learn.

Technology evolves. Human biology does not.

We can build smarter systems, but we can't upgrade human capacity for attention, decision-making, and adaptability without addressing wellbeing. Low wellbeing means lower trust, higher error rates, and resistance to change.

Human-centred predictive safety that reduces cognitive load while increasing adaptability.

L. David Marquet just dropped some serious leadership wisdom at the Navios Annual Forum in Manila.

His core message from commanding USS Santa Fe and captured in his brilliant book, Turn the Ship Around: stop creating followers. Start creating leaders.

The traditional "leader-follower" model breaks down at sea. When the Captain isn't on the bridge, decisions still need to be made. Lives depend on it.

Marquet's approach flips the script:
• Push authority to where the information lives
• Replace "permission to..." with "I intend to..."
• Build competence before granting control
• Create clarity at every level

This isn't just naval theory. It's exactly what drives human performance and wellbeing onboard vessels.

When crew members have genuine decision-making authority, three things happen:
1. They stay more engaged and alert
2. They take ownership of safety outcomes
3. They develop faster as professionals

The alternative? Passive compliance. Waiting for orders. Disengagement.
That's when incidents happen.

Leaders creating leaders; not just followers. 

I'm building on these principles in my talk later today, connecting leadership practices to measurable performance and wellbeing outcomes at sea.

Today I'm speaking at the Industrial Safety Summit in Baku, Azerbaijan.

This is the third annual summit, jointly organised by the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Azerbaijan Industrial Safety Association.

I'll be on the "Safe Talks" panel discussing something that's reshaping how we think about industrial safety: the convergence of AI, Human & Organisational Performance, and wellbeing.

Here's the core premise I'll be exploring:
- AI detects patterns we can't see at scale.
- HOP helps us make sense of those patterns through human judgment.
- Wellbeing ensures people have the capacity to act on what we learn.

The questions we're tackling are the ones keeping safety leaders up at night:
- How do you maintain human trust when AI starts making predictive decisions?
- How do you integrate AI without undermining the HOP principles that emphasise learning from error?
- Where's the tipping point for economic viability without compromising safety culture?

These aren't theoretical questions. They're playing out in operations right now across every industrial sector.

The intersection of these three domains is where the future of safety lives. Not in choosing between technology and humanity, but in understanding how they amplify each other.
