My biggest professional regret is how much of my life I’ve lost to accidentally doomscrolling the LinkedIn feed. You open LinkedIn to reply to one message, then resurface 17 minutes later wondering where all your time went. 

Yes, there are good posts to be found around here.

Yes, you should engage with people you actually care about.

But to do that, you have to first scroll past the 90% of content written by ChatGPT, and that's after you've skimmed past the ads and puzzle games.

Turns out, there’s a better way to use LinkedIn without getting sucked into the feed.

I’m grateful to announce that the LinkedIn inbox is still a mess.

Last year, I worked anxiously on Kondo, worried about the possibility that, after shipping a bunch of new puzzle games, LinkedIn’s product team would finally turn its attention to the inbox.

As someone building a tool to fix the LinkedIn inbox, I might be out of a job if it suddenly stops needing fixing.

I hate to admit it, but it would be quite easy for LinkedIn to put us out of business, all they have to do is build a functional inbox with labels, reminders, folders, etc.

But 2025 came and went, and by the end of it, they did nothing!

The 2026 LinkedIn inbox continues to be a cluttered mess.

I guess we live to see another day 🤷‍♂️.

My cofounder has never read a single LinkedIn post I made.

In fact, he low key thinks LinkedIn is for clowns.

He might be on to something.

While I have the fun job of running about talking to customers and pulling marketing stunts, Leo just spends 12 hours a day actually building trykondo.com

You might wonder how he manages to somewhat successfully build an app for LinkedIn power users, if he is barely a LinkedIn user himself.

The answer is simple really. 

I’m a really big customer of his, and he listens to me a lot. 

For some context, that’s not as easy as spinning our chairs around in the office. We live 16 time zones apart, and talk 1-2 hours a week at most.

Our solution is to radically divide ownership.

What I do :

- talk to customers
- decide what to build next 
- write tickets in Linear 

What he does:

- figure out about how to build the thing
- write code (or babysit AI)
- test the feature 
- ship the feature 

In this set up, we almost NEVER need to debate anything. He doesn’t care why I decide a feature is important, and I don’t care how he wants to ship it. We just trust each other to do the work we’re supposed to do. 

(The only time we really disagree is when I think something should be easy and he thinks I’m dumb for thinking that. Then we get into a brawl.)

Honestly this setup only works because of: 

1) how we’re wired as individuals - Leo likes to code all day and not need to talk to anyone, I like to talk to interesting people and come up with impossible ideas. 

2) our prior relationship - we worked together for years before building Kondo together and wouldn't have if we didn't trust each other's skill and judgement 

Is this going to end in disaster?

Last night at family dinner, my father-in-law asked what I do for a living.


I said, “I help people organize their inbox.”

He goes, “So…you’re a digital janitor?”

That's pretty much it, TBH.

I make a living cleaning up LinkedIn mess, except I made myself a magical vacuum called Kondo, a tool that gets your LinkedIn inbox organized like it's never been before (and doesn’t judge your unread count).

I made my very first marketing budget in November. It was very scary! 

For context, I’m a first time founder who’s never owned marketing before.

Also, we’re fully bootstrapped, so no VC money to throw around, and every dollar we spend could be literally a dollar we pay ourselves instead. 

The idea of spending 20k / month was a bit…crazy. 

1️⃣ So, why spend money?

A vast majority of Kondo’s growth so far has been organic i.e. free 😅. 

That’s great! BUT also not something we could SCALE. 

You can't 2x your word-of-mouth next month just because you want to.

I wanted to find a way I can spend $1 to get $2 back.

2️⃣ What to spend on?

Mainly, influencers. 

Our power users already talk about Kondo a bunch. That totally worked.

By paying them money, we can double down and give them more reason to give our brand and product a spot in their content.

We spent a month picking influencers, 70% of our budget ended up going to people who had previously already used and paid for Kondo themselves.

3️⃣ Why 20k? 

I read Grant Lee’s advice, he said most startups spend too little for too short a time on too narrow a set of creators, and suggested allocating 10-20k for 6 months.

Basically following that advice + it's the max we can spend without running into the red, heh. 

4️⃣ How would I know if I get $2 back?

The problem with influencer spend is that attribution is lossy. 

Someone might see the post, go away, come back 2 months later and forget all about that link the person said to click when they sign up.

I asked Vitalii Dodonov who's spent a ton more money than me how he deals with this and he said add a 2-3x multiple to the signups directly attributable, and if that gets the spend to target ROI then keep going. 


What do y'all think? Is this going to end badly for me? 😬

Sending voice notes on LinkedIn is an absolute waste of time. 

But you should still send them anyway.

Here's the deal:

- Your prospects DMs are flooded with templated outreach.
- Most people DON'T send voice notes (some don't even know you can)
- So, when you send 🎙️ you're probably the ONLY DM in their preview that says (audio message).

It sticks out, proves you're human, shows you put some effort into it.

Problem is you CAN'T SEND VOICE NOTES ON DESKTOP

So if you want to do this A LOT, you have to grab your phone each time, find the prospect, hold down the button, repeat on loop. Huge waste of time.

And if you were thinking like me (were you?) that you could hack it by connecting your iPhone to your Mac, nice try, doesn't work.

Startup founder was the last job I wanted.

Three years ago while I was working for a startup, a friend asked if I wanted to start my own some day. 

I said nope.

Honestly, founder sounded like a nightmare job:

- No boss to halp if I got stuck
- Can’t ignore problems above my pay grade
- I hated fundraising, hiring, negotiating, all the stuff
- I get stressed easily and worry a lot 

So, I was a happy camper being someone else’s employee. 

Fast forward a bit, the company got acquired, and the folks I'd grown fond of working with were breaking up. 

That sucked. I didn’t want it to end. 

So I got together with some teammates I liked and said, ok fine, let’s go start something so we can keep working together

That’s why I became a founder, I guess.

Honestly it still is a nightmare  ̶s̶o̶m̶e̶ ̶ most days, but a few things have helped made it less scary:

- We made no unicorn ambitions
- We got to profitability quickly
- We have just 1 employee Anastasia (she puts cats in our app)
- I’m learned to compartmentalize worries (aka hide from problems)
- We got an advisor Gaurav (I text him about everything hard)
- We pay agencies who own outcomes 

And I’m happy dealing with all of it, because it lets me work with people I like on a product I care about. 

Anyone else land up doing something you swore you’d never do?

Our most loyal users will never pay us a cent. 

And we're super happy with that!

Example: Chris Colt joined with 2 free months from Kobi Omenaka's referral link in December.

Then, he used his own link to accumulate $420 in referral credits.

Some of our users have THOUSANDS in referral credits banked up.

Meaning they can use Kondo for 10 years and still not have to pay for it.

Btw, these credits currently aren't cash. They offset your subscription. Meaning that people refer Kondo because they actually think it's useful and keep wanting to use it themselves. Not because they get paid to shill it.

- Adds HubSpot link and fields to the Kondo side panel
- Syncs Kondo labels, notes, etc. to HubSpot custom fields
- Logs DMs to the HubSpot activity feed

My first job as a consultant taught me to plan meticulously.

Running a tech startup forced me to unlearn this.

In consulting, we helped F500 companies plan 5 years ahead. Think million-dollar research projects with phased rollouts over years.

Every project had detailed timelines, resource allocation, dependencies mapped out.

So naturally I brought that mindset to building Kondo.

Whenever our team meets for an offsite, I tell myself this is an opportunity to get everyone on the same page about ALL THE THINGS we’re going to do for the next 6 months, estimate how long each thing is going to take, prioritize, forecast, etc.

Honestly it’s been a complete waste of time.

Because the reality is when you’re building something new in tech, you’re learning something new about your business every day, and changing your mind every other day.

So there’s no point planning that far ahead.

Our new approach is only planning ONE step ahead.

We re-evaluate priorities weekly anyway, so why plan 3 weeks out?

“Fail to plan, plan to fail” is true.

But if you plan too much when you don’t need to, you’re wasting valuable time that could be spent building.

Leave planning to the consultants (and don’t hire them until you’re a F500 company)
