We used this data to provide clients like Procore, ServiceNow, Snowflake, Twilio, and ZoomInfo (etc...) with research, advisory support, and consulting to help them grow faster. We also hosted TOPO Summit, an annual event that brought together 2,000 sales and marketing leaders to share proven best practices. As a bootstrapped business, we punched way above our weight, supporting over $20B in client revenue, all thanks to our remarkable team of analysts.

Tippit

Tippit was a digital media company that was acquired by Ziff Davis. We owned and operated a network of websites that helped professionals make better technology decisions in areas like CRM, telephony, and finance software. Major accomplishment was developing a vertically-integrated model that allowed us to monetize traffic in excess of $1,000 RPM.

Covalent

Covalent was the leading provider of products and services for Apache Tomcat and Apache HTTP, the world's leading Web server. Basically shut the company down, but two team members/absolute legends (Mark Brewer and Javier Soltero) acquired the technology assets of Covalent and built two great businesses which were ultimately acquired by VMware.

Corio was an application service provider (ASP) that delivered enterprise applications like PeopleSoft and Siebel to its clients via the internet - basically the first generation of SaaS. Corio completed a successful IPO and then was acquired by IBM.

Here's what we (the startup community) are building/funding right now...

- "Chad the brainrot IDE"
- VC-backed bot farms
- Casino capitalism apps
- Cluely
- More sh*tcoins

The defining principles of these companies are:

1. Nihilism - nothing matters

2. Performative - do whatever it takes to spike engagement, no matter how fleeting

Put these two things together and we're at the point in the cycle where founders are willing to trade almost anything (value, their own dignity) for a temporary attention spike (typically lasts ~10 hours).

Bummer. We should be building companies that improve the world. Doesn't have to be a radical improvement. It could just be that we make the job of the payroll person 5% better. And we should be building companies that create enduring, sustaining value - not fleeting engagement spikes.

This too shall pass, but right now these nihilistic/performative startups are killing my personal vibe.

Why do US startups grow so much faster than the rest of the world?

Many reasons, but one that's not discussed is that US startups are just way more aggressive with sales and marketing.

I've been meeting with lots of international startups recently, running GTM Founder workshops, discussing the latest/greatest growth things, etc... Basically trying to educate founders on what's happening with GTM in the United States and why it's so important in today's market (aka, a good product is no longer sufficient).

And there's just massive resistance to what we consider mainstream GTM tactics in the US.

There's a *cultural/mindset* thing where founders are just not comfortable with many of the sales and marketing tactics that we use in the States. Even though these founders: 1) Want to break into the US market; 2) Know that these GTM tactics work.

I'm hearing things like "I can't do that. My friends will make fun of me" and "I can't say that" and "They're (US-based competitor) lying".

I find that mindset really, really admirable and refreshing given where we are with the state of startup marketing in the United States right now (we are way out over our ski tips).

At the same time, I want these non-US founders to succeed and to do that, they'll need to walk the line between what they're comfortable with and what they need to do to hit the growth metrics that the market (VCs, customers, competitors) demands.

That's a high level principle that isn't very useful when it comes to building a startup. Honestly, I'm not sure how to translate it into day-to-day tactics, but I really hope we can. These founders, startups, products are amazing and deserve an honest shot.
