It was my first SMX - Search Marketing Expo in Munich today.

A nice trip to enjoy the company of El-Hadi Zahri and discuss GTM strategies for our new products and initiatives. (more info coming soon!)

Content-wise, I had the chance to attend 5 talks. Not all lived up to my expectations, but certainly those of Malte Landwehr and Aleyda Solís, for example, did. Or, even, exceeded them.

It has been nice to meet and chat with some smart colleagues, partners, clients, like Hannah Downes, Kerstin van Haastrecht, Thomas Peham, Carlos Peula Jiménez, Jesús Alfaro Aguado, David Gerginov, Nikita Tanskiy.

I have learned a few things, challenged some believes and strengthened some concepts that were already rolling in my mind.

It was certainly nice to hear Malte saying that #Reddit is a great source for AI citations (we're hosting a webinar on the subject on March 24th, if you want to register for free, link in the qst comment ⬇️ ).

Just a pity I had to leave now and skip Day 2. But, after a week of holidays, my backlog is calling and I need to be back to work tomorrow.

It’s been one week since the edition of the Berlin SEO & Content Club x SEOFOMO meetup and we're all still buzzing.

The energy in the room was unreal. An international crowd of SEOs, content nerds, founders, in-house leads, consultants, all packed together, sharing notes, opinions, doubts, and sharp takes on where search is heading.

Honestly, it felt like a perfect event. Nothing missing.

Well… almost nothing.

Two things didn’t make it:

1️⃣ The legendary SEOFOMO beanies Aleyda sent over got stuck somewhere thanks to “creative” weather conditions.
2️⃣ Actual good Berlin weather. A bit of sunshine, like we have today, would’ve been nice.

In your opinion, what are the three foundational things everyone should know about AI Search to start creating their strategy?

Hint: AI Visibility alone won't help you grow. You need to care for your brand reputation, communicate it consistently, and create opportunities to be cited via trusted off-page sources like Reddit...

Through our new tool (currently in Alpha, Beta opening in May 💡), we tracked 3 brands that showed sharp spikes in Reddit citations. A pattern typical of generic content services. Here's what we found across 90+ posts and comments over 60 days.

Initial results looked promising: 

👍 400+ upvotes in the first month 
👍 Comments appearing in top threads 
👍 Accounts gaining followers steadily

Then something changed. 📉

By weeks 4-5, communities started calling out accounts: "This reads like it was written by someone who doesn't actually use this product", "Why does every post feel the same?", "Fake post." Moderators removed posts. Upvotes dried up. Momentum vanished.

But the bigger problem: Reddit shapes the information environment LLMs learn from. When users flag content as inauthentic, they're not just downvoting: they're signaling it's untrustworthy. That damage extends beyond Reddit into the wider AI-mediated information ecosystem.

The only sustainable Reddit strategy is built on #authenticity, #consistency, and #realexpertise.

You may have gained visibility in LLMs only to realize that what AI says about your brand is outdated, incomplete, or plainly wrong.

Examples include: Old pricing information, outdated product descriptions and wrong messaging.

Look, in many ways LLM answers are merely the average of everything that has ever been said about your brand online.

And that includes your library of COVID-related content, a Reddit thread where your customer complained about the price increase in 2018, a listicle article created by your competitor, the Youtube channel a past team member created 4 years ago with a password now missing, or the review site(s) that you are not actively managing.

The good news: A lot of these LLM sources are in your control - others are harder but not impossible to update, align and expand on.

Here is how we think about it:

Top down from web properties that you own and control to those the hardest to influence... ⬇️

1. Audit the content on your own website. Prune old and outdated topics. Refresh those topics that are still relevant today. Make your point of view not the lonely theme that lives on a pillar page - make it the cohesive approach that permeates all content old and new. 

2. Review your social media profiles and update them to the current logo, company boiler plate and tagline.
Yes, that includes LinkedIn, Youtube, Facebook etc. But also factor in Crunchbase, Google My Business, Glassdoor and other directories.

3. Integrations, partners and marketplaces. If they still use your brand colors from 2019, now is the time to get in contact with their teams. Make sure that their integration pages have your latest boiler plate, product description and feature list.

4. Update your review site listings. Same boiler plate as for socials. Making sure you are listed in the correct category. Collect fresh reviews that talk about the latest features, e.g. your AI rollout 6 months ago.

5. Ask for corrections on listicles that you are already featured in - this is especially true if you are a category leader and competitors and content sites naturally include your brand in their "best software" listicles. If they have wrong or outdated information, you can always ask for an update.

6. And then, you will want to build an approach to for digital PR, media appearances, inclusions in more listicles or meaningful participation in forums.

Most people start at the bottom, the hard stuff, the unlikely stuff (listicles, Reddit, Wikipedia...). I recommend to start at the top: With the web properties that you own. 

Tell a cohesive story.
Update and align your digital footprint before you expand.
