It was my first SMX - Search Marketing Expo in Munich today.

A nice trip to enjoy the company of El-Hadi Zahri and discuss GTM strategies for our new products and initiatives. (more info coming soon!)

Content-wise, I had the chance to attend 5 talks. Not all lived up to my expectations, but certainly those of Malte Landwehr and Aleyda Solís, for example, did. Or, even, exceeded them.

It has been nice to meet and chat with some smart colleagues, partners, clients, like Hannah Downes, Kerstin van Haastrecht, Thomas Peham, Carlos Peula Jiménez, Jesús Alfaro Aguado, David Gerginov, Nikita Tanskiy.

I have learned a few things, challenged some believes and strengthened some concepts that were already rolling in my mind.

It was certainly nice to hear Malte saying that #Reddit is a great source for AI citations (we're hosting a webinar on the subject on March 24th, if you want to register for free, link in the qst comment ⬇️ ).

Just a pity I had to leave now and skip Day 2. But, after a week of holidays, my backlog is calling and I need to be back to work tomorrow.

It’s been one week since the edition of the Berlin SEO & Content Club x SEOFOMO meetup and we're all still buzzing.

The energy in the room was unreal. An international crowd of SEOs, content nerds, founders, in-house leads, consultants, all packed together, sharing notes, opinions, doubts, and sharp takes on where search is heading.

Honestly, it felt like a perfect event. Nothing missing.

Well… almost nothing.

Two things didn’t make it:

1️⃣ The legendary SEOFOMO beanies Aleyda sent over got stuck somewhere thanks to “creative” weather conditions.
2️⃣ Actual good Berlin weather. A bit of sunshine, like we have today, would’ve been nice.

Hint: AI Visibility alone won't help you grow. You need to care for your brand reputation, communicate it consistently, and create opportunities to be cited via trusted off-page sources like Reddit...

Through our new tool (currently in Alpha, Beta opening in May 💡), we tracked 3 brands that showed sharp spikes in Reddit citations. A pattern typical of generic content services. Here's what we found across 90+ posts and comments over 60 days.

Initial results looked promising: 

👍 400+ upvotes in the first month 
👍 Comments appearing in top threads 
👍 Accounts gaining followers steadily

Then something changed. 📉

By weeks 4-5, communities started calling out accounts: "This reads like it was written by someone who doesn't actually use this product", "Why does every post feel the same?", "Fake post." Moderators removed posts. Upvotes dried up. Momentum vanished.

But the bigger problem: Reddit shapes the information environment LLMs learn from. When users flag content as inauthentic, they're not just downvoting: they're signaling it's untrustworthy. That damage extends beyond Reddit into the wider AI-mediated information ecosystem.

The only sustainable Reddit strategy is built on #authenticity, #consistency, and #realexpertise.

Wie einfach lassen sich KI Antworten beeinflussen und was, wenn es die Brand gar nicht gibt?! Genau das haben wir getestet! 🤔

Mit einem komplett fiktiven Matcha Pulver namens "Matchatteus" (ja, mein Name war die Inspiration) wollten wir herausfinden, ob man es schaffen kann, ein nicht existierendes Produkt in KI Antworten zu platzieren.

Das Setup: Wir haben 3 unique Listicle Artikel erstellt, in denen wir verschiedene Matcha Sorten miteinander verglichen und Matchatteus jeweils in die Top 3 gesetzt haben. Diese Artikel haben wir auf 3 verschiedenen externen Portalen veröffentlicht, von denen wir wussten, dass sie häufig als Quellen von KI Systemen zitiert werden.

Anschließend haben wir über 12 verschiedene Prompts systematisch gemessen, wie oft Matchatteus in den Antworten von sechs KI Systemen auftaucht.

Die Ergebnisse sind bemerkenswert:

🟢 Claude: 63%
🟢 AI Overviews: 49%
🟡 ChatGPT: 11%
🟡 AI Mode: 11%
🔴 Perplexity: 7%
🔴 Gemini: 2%

Besonders spannend: Bei Prompts wie "Was ist der beste Matcha?" erreichen wir bei Claude eine Sichtbarkeit von 100%. Bei Gemini gleichzeitig 0%. Und das Ganze war bereits 24 Stunden nach Veröffentlichung der Artikel sichtbar.

Was das zeigt: Wir haben dieses Experiment bewusst als kontrollierten Test durchgeführt. Aber stellt euch vor, jemand macht das mit einer anderen Absicht. Aktuell steht Manipulation in KI Systemen Tür und Tor offen. 3 Artikel reichen aus, um ein nicht existierendes Produkt in KI Empfehlungen zu platzieren. Ohne Prüfung, ohne Verifizierung, ohne Konsequenzen. Was passiert, wenn jemand das nutzt, um gezielt Fehlinformationen oder minderwertige Produkte in KI Antworten zu pushen? Die KI Systeme sind darauf heute noch nicht vorbereitet.

Die durchschnittliche Sichtbarkeit über alle Systeme lag bei 24%. Für ein Produkt, das nicht existiert. 3 Artikel. Keine bezahlte Werbung. Nur gezielte Content Platzierung.

GEO funktioniert. Aber nicht überall gleich!
