SEO budgeting in 2026 is shifting from output to influence, I just read on the latest release of one of my favourite newsletters, Growth Memo, by Kevin Indig.

Most marketing leaders are still budgeting for click growth, even though:

- AI Overviews have already cut organic traffic by half
- AI Mode will make most search sessions zero-click
- Visibility no longer equals visits

But...this is the new reality:

- SEO is no longer a spend → output model, it’s rather a capacity → influence system
- Budgets shouldn’t chase traffic but they should build authority and presence in AI-driven discovery

What this means for SEO in 2026?

- Stop asking “How can SEO drive more clicks?”
- Start asking, instead, “What capabilities do we need to earn brand visibility inside AI ecosystems?”

"Trust” is quietly becoming the new #SEO power metric.

I just read Duane Forrester's latest piece on Search Engine Journal, and the message is pretty direct: if AI doesn’t trust you, you don’t show up.

Ranking alone doesn’t cut it anymore, for obvious reasons. Brands need recognition + credibility strong enough for machines to pull you into their answers.

In this context, #EEAT isn’t a checklist. It’s the difference between being “searchable” and being “mention-worthy.”

A lot of brand awareness is now happening inside AI tools… where you don’t get referral data. The dark funnel just got darker.

Structured data, clear authorship, updated content, real experience, and external validation are the signals AI actually latches onto.

 To summarize it: your content wins when your expertise is verifiable, your signals are consistent, and your brand is the one AI feels safe citing.

The AI era is rewarding outcomes, not insights.

Kevin Indig’s latest analysis makes the shift undisputably clear: investors poured $227M into AI visibility trackers because dashboards looked like easy SaaS, but the real value sits in tools that actually ship work.

The pattern is obvious:
Monitoring tools → instant onboarding, pretty charts, zero defensibility, negative switching costs.
Agentic SEO platforms → operational depth, workflow automation, brand-grounded context, high switching costs.

One gets you information, the other gets you outcomes.

That’s why “visibility monitoring” is already being commoditized. When every vendor offers the same graph, the moat disappears. 

If you’re investing:

- Follow the friction. High-friction products become moats once integrated.

If you’re building:

 - Insight layers will get bundled away. Execution layers win by becoming the workflow.

Das bedeutet: Publisher-Quellen werden jetzt sichtbar in den Antworten verlinkt, genau wie bei Perplexity. Plus: Eine "Show all"-Funktion zeigt alle verwendeten Quellen auf einen Blick.

Warum das für GEO im B2B ein wichtig ist:

Wenn ich mit mittelständischen Unternehmen spreche, höre ich ständig: "ChatGPT dürfen wir aus Datenschutzgründen nicht nutzen."

Und genau hier liegt die Chance! 

→ Copilot ist DSGVO-konform nutzbar
→ Bereits in Teams, Outlook & Co. integriert  
→ 80%+ der deutschen Unternehmen nutzen Microsoft 365
→ Die Hürden? Minimal!

Während alle auf ChatGPT optimieren, wird der deutsche Mittelstand still und leise zum Copilot-User und genau DA musst du mit deiner Marke und Unternehmen präsent sein!

Mit den neuen Citation-Features wird Copilot jetzt zum vollwertigen Discovery-Kanal. Wer hier nicht optimiert, verpasst den deutschen B2B-Markt.

Wie seht ihr das? Optimiert ihr schon für Microsoft Copilot?

Eigentlich bin ich großer Fan von Studien, da diese immer ein wenig Licht ins Dunkle bringen, aber eine Art von Studien finde ich super kontraproduktiv. Das sind die Studien, die sich anschauen, welche Domains in bestimmten KI-Systemen zitiert werden.

Laut Studien ist Offpage-GEO ganz einfach:

Macht Reddit, seid aktiv auf LinkedIn, besorgt euch einen Wikipedia-Artikel und schreibt vielleicht noch einen Beitrag auf Medium und macht ein Video für YouTube…

… aber trifft das auch auf euch und eure Branche zu? 🤔

Spoiler: Nein!

Das mag ja schön und gut sein, dass diese Domains häufig zitiert werden, aber in der Regel gehen sie an der eigentlichen Realität der Marken vorbei.

Wenn man sich anschaut, welche Domains für das eigene Prompt-Set bzw. sogar Teile des Prompt-Sets zitiert werden, sieht das schon ganz anders aus.

In dem Slider findet ihr 11 verschiedene Top-10-Domains, die bei ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews und ggf. Google AI Mode als Quellen herangezogen werden:

⬇️ Finanzen & Versicherungen (Bausparen & Versicherungen in der Schweiz)
⬇️ E-Commerce (Tiernahrung, Elektronik, Gartenmöbel)

Jede Branche ist anders, jede Branche braucht ihre eigene Betrachtung.

Welche Quellen werden in deiner Branche zitiert?

Ich glaube, es gibt aktuell nichts Spannenderes, als die Entwicklung von LLM/AI Tracking Tools zu beobachten. Gefühlt kommt jede Woche ein neues, spannendes Feature raus!

Letzte Woche ist mir ein Feature von Rankshift aufgefallen. In Deutschland kaum bekannt, denn das Tool kommt ursprünglich aus Belgien. Aber was die da gebaut haben, ist genau das, was wir für professionelles GEO brauchen!

Ich bin fest überzeugt: Die Analyse von Citations wird ein wesentlicher Bestandteil der täglichen ToDos im GEO-Kontext. Quellen kommen, Quellen gehen und genau deshalb müssen wir verstehen:

📊 Wann wurden sie das erste Mal von KI-Systemen zitiert?
🤖 Welches Modell zitiert bestimmte Quellen wie stark?
📈 Wie konstant sind manche Quellen über die Zeit?

Denn wenn ich Inhalte aufbaue, die zu Citations werden, muss ich diese im Detail monitoren.

Das neue Citation Detail Analytics Feature zeigt für jede einzelne Quelle:

✅ Source Usage Over Time: Sehe ich Momentum oder Decay? Wird die Quelle häufiger zitiert oder verliert sie wieder an Bedeutung?

✅ Model-spezifische Citations: Perplexity liebt meine Artikel, aber Google AI Overviews zitiert andere Quellen? Das ist mein Signal, um nochmal tiefer in die Unterschiede der Systeme einzusteigen.

✅ Prompt-Analyse: Welche meiner getrackten Prompts nutzen diese URL als Citation über die Zeit und wie häufig.

Mein Fazit:
Wer GEO ernst nimmt, braucht diese Daten. Nicht als Nice to have, sondern als Grundlage für strategische Entscheidungen.

Die Tools werden besser, die Daten granularer. Jetzt liegt es an uns, sie richtig zu nutzen.

Nutzt ihr schon Citation Tracking? Wenn ja, welches Tool?

Citation Research wird meiner Meinung nach immer wichtiger und ein Teil zukünftiger Aufgaben bei der Optimierung für KI-Systeme.

Was meine ich mit Citation Research? Also die detaillierte Betrachtung der genutzten Quellen für KI-Systeme. Denn du brauchst ein klares Bild über die Art von Quellen, um im Mention Marketing die richtigen Hebel zu bewegen.

Mich überrascht es immer wieder, welche Quellen herangezogen werden, was für Art von Domains und welches Content-Format es ist.

Writesonic hat gestern ein paar spannende Zahlen veröffentlicht, die aufzeigen, welche Content-Formate bei Branded und Non-Branded Prompts genutzt werden.

Unter Non-Branded werden Prompts wie z.B. „beste ERP-Systeme für mittelständische Unternehmen" verstanden

Unter Branded werden Prompts wie z.B. „SAP S/4HANA Features" verstanden

Dass die Quellen unterschiedlich sind, macht schon Sinn, denn je nach Prompt haben Nutzende eine andere Erwartungshaltung.

Die Zahlen aus der Studie (siehe Grafik):
Listicles fallen von 30,9 % auf 19,6 % (-37 %)
Reviews steigen um 637 %
Press Releases verdoppeln sich (2,3x)
Comparison Pages verdreifachen sich (2,7x)

Methodik: Branded Queries = Suchanfragen, die explizit einen Firmen-/Produkt-/Servicenamen erwähnen. Non-Branded = generische Kategoriesuchen. Analyse basiert auf 282.828.738 Citations von 8 AI-Plattformen über 18 Branchen.

Wie regelmäßig und genau schaust du dir die Quellen pro KI-System an, die die Antworten bei ChatGPT, Perplexity und Co. generieren?

Offpage GEO ist kein Projekt, sondern ein Prozess!
… denn die von KI Systemen zitierten Domains ändern sich stetig.

Gestern hatte ich bei der Rheinwerk Spotlight Konferenz die Studie von Profound vorgestellt: 40 bis 60% der zitierten Domains in KI Antworten sind nach nur einem Monat komplett andere, bei identischen Anfragen! 😮

Die Zahlen im Detail:
→ Google AI Overviews: 59,3% Citation Drift
→ ChatGPT: 54,1% Citation Drift
→ Microsoft Copilot: 53,4% Citation Drift
→ Perplexity: 40,5% Citation Drift

Über 6 Monate (Januar bis Juli) steigt der Drift sogar auf 70 bis 90%.

Was bedeutet das für deine GEO Strategie?

Anders als bei Google mit 4 bis 5 Core Updates pro Jahr sind KI Zitationen inherent instabil. Einmalige Messungen sind wertlos. Wer heute in ChatGPT zitiert wird, ist morgen vielleicht raus.

Die Konsequenz: Offpage GEO braucht kontinuierliches Monitoring, statistische Signifikanz und plattformspezifische Strategien. Keine Quick Fixes, sondern systematische Prozesse.

Die Herausforderung ist nicht, OB dein Content in KI Antworten erscheint, sondern WANN, WIE OFT und WARUM.

Mein Tipp: Wer GEO als einmaliges Projekt behandelt, wird scheitern. Es ist ein Marathon, kein Sprint (wie schön, dass ich meine Redewendungen auch bei GEO 1:1 nutzen kann 😅)
