It was my first SMX - Search Marketing Expo in Munich today.

A nice trip to enjoy the company of El-Hadi Zahri and discuss GTM strategies for our new products and initiatives. (more info coming soon!)

Content-wise, I had the chance to attend 5 talks. Not all lived up to my expectations, but certainly those of Malte Landwehr and Aleyda Solís, for example, did. Or, even, exceeded them.

It has been nice to meet and chat with some smart colleagues, partners, clients, like Hannah Downes, Kerstin van Haastrecht, Thomas Peham, Carlos Peula Jiménez, Jesús Alfaro Aguado, David Gerginov, Nikita Tanskiy.

I have learned a few things, challenged some believes and strengthened some concepts that were already rolling in my mind.

It was certainly nice to hear Malte saying that #Reddit is a great source for AI citations (we're hosting a webinar on the subject on March 24th, if you want to register for free, link in the qst comment ⬇️ ).

Just a pity I had to leave now and skip Day 2. But, after a week of holidays, my backlog is calling and I need to be back to work tomorrow.

It’s been one week since the edition of the Berlin SEO & Content Club x SEOFOMO meetup and we're all still buzzing.

The energy in the room was unreal. An international crowd of SEOs, content nerds, founders, in-house leads, consultants, all packed together, sharing notes, opinions, doubts, and sharp takes on where search is heading.

Honestly, it felt like a perfect event. Nothing missing.

Well… almost nothing.

Two things didn’t make it:

1️⃣ The legendary SEOFOMO beanies Aleyda sent over got stuck somewhere thanks to “creative” weather conditions.
2️⃣ Actual good Berlin weather. A bit of sunshine, like we have today, would’ve been nice.

Through our new tool (currently in Alpha, Beta opening in May 💡), we tracked 3 brands that showed sharp spikes in Reddit citations. A pattern typical of generic content services. Here's what we found across 90+ posts and comments over 60 days.

Initial results looked promising: 

👍 400+ upvotes in the first month 
👍 Comments appearing in top threads 
👍 Accounts gaining followers steadily

Then something changed. 📉

By weeks 4-5, communities started calling out accounts: "This reads like it was written by someone who doesn't actually use this product", "Why does every post feel the same?", "Fake post." Moderators removed posts. Upvotes dried up. Momentum vanished.

But the bigger problem: Reddit shapes the information environment LLMs learn from. When users flag content as inauthentic, they're not just downvoting: they're signaling it's untrustworthy. That damage extends beyond Reddit into the wider AI-mediated information ecosystem.

The only sustainable Reddit strategy is built on #authenticity, #consistency, and #realexpertise.

While analyzing ChatGPT’s code, I came across a recurring internal term directly tied to advertising: “Bazaar.”

Bazaar appears to be the internal naming convention for the ad framework powering sponsored placements in ChatGPT.

Beyond generic ad control data, the codebase contains clearly defined action types, including:

There is also a dedicated system prompt triggered when a user interacts with an ad via the “Ask ChatGPT” feature.

The internal instruction reads:
"The user is referring to an ad shown to them about: {LABEL}. Your response MUST BE ABOUT THE ADS shown, since the user explicitly asked about them..."

Deep Research says "0 searches". The WebSocket says 30.

After completing a Deep Research session, the interface displays:
👉  "Research completed in 21m · 45 citations · 0 searches."

The "0 searches" value is technically correct — it counts user-initiated searches. What the agent executed itself is not reflected there 🤯 

I intercepted and analysed the underlying WebSocket stream via Chrome DevTools. 

Three findings I didn't expect:

1️⃣ The search engine is Bing
Every single one of the 30 search calls carries the field `source: "web_with_bing"`. No provider switching, no variation. The tool name in the stream is `browser(.)search` — the actual index behind it is Bing.

2️⃣ 30 queries in 21 minutes
30 search calls were dispatched via the WebSocket protocol, invisible to the standard interface. 

3️⃣ Different number of SERP URLs per query
The `topn` parameter varies systematically between 2 and 10. 
🔸 broad entry queries receive `topn: 10`
🔸standard brand queries `topn: 5`
🔸lower-priority queries `topn: 3`,
🔸pure image verification `topn: 2`
👉 70% of all calls use `topn: 5`

While reverse-engineering Grounding Queries in Bing’s AI Performance Report, I noticed an interesting connection: these queries are very similar to the rsGroundingChips queries.

In the background of Bing, we can identify two types of chips:

▶️ 𝗿𝘀𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 – the grounding keywords Bing uses to generate AI content; closely tied to the related queries in the SERPs.

▶️ 𝗽𝗮𝗮𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 – linked to the People Also Ask section and similarly influencing AI-generated answers.

These chips only appear once you expand the search via the "Search" tab and receive a Copilot-generated summary, offering valuable insight into how Bing creates AI content.

In my latest article, I describe this process in detail and show the exact steps so anyone can replicate it.

When using Copilot, you can already observe multiple ad formats being dynamically injected into conversations. What’s particularly interesting is the internal logic behind them: so-called SelectionReasons that indicate why a specific ad was served.

In practice, the most common format I encounter is “text”:
A short sponsored message, clearly labeled, combined with an image.

👉 How to inspect the data yourself (all of this can be extracted via browser DevTools).
Here’s how:
1️⃣ Open Microsoft Copilot and start a new chat.
2️⃣ Open your browser’s DevTools in parallel.
3️⃣ Continue interacting until an ad is shown.
4️⃣ Refresh the page. (Important: The ad disappears visually, but the data remains stored in the background network logs.)
5️⃣ In DevTools, navigate to the Network tab.
6️⃣ Search for: 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆?𝗮𝗽𝗶-𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻=2
7️⃣ Inspect the response payload to analyze ad format and SelectionReasons.
