I see this mishap often with senior executives conducting an executive job search.

They do the research.

A recent piece by The New York Times noted that so many job seekers have embraced AI tools that they've overwhelmed employers with AI-generated resumes.

That's the wrong way to use AI.

The right way? Strategic prompts that accelerate your discovery of networking contacts and employment opportunities.

I recently wrote an article for Martha Heller and Heller, outlining three specific AI prompts for executive job seekers.

Here's a preview of each prompt below:

1️⃣ Prompt 1: Make Interview Conversations More Fluid

Feed the AI your LinkedIn profile URL alongside your interviewer's profile URL. Ask for 10 ice-breaker questions for the specific role. The output gives you conversation starters that connect your story to theirs.

2️⃣ Prompt 2: Nurture Your Network and Spark Replies

Same approach, different goal. Feed both profiles to the AI and ask for 10 ways to reach out that will increase the odds of getting a reply. You'll get context-rich suggestions that move past generic requests.

3️⃣ Prompt 3: Target Employers Who Value Your Background

Ask the AI to analyze your profile and give you a list of 20 companies most likely to want someone with your background. This narrows the playing field to organizations where you have a realistic edge.

NOTE: the quality of these outputs depends entirely on how well your LinkedIn profile articulates your expertise and measurable impact.

If your profile is vague, the AI suggestions will be vague.

If your achievements aren't quantified, the AI can't match you to companies seeking those outcomes.

This is where most executives get stuck. They try these prompts, get mediocre results, and blame the AI.

But the AI is only as good as the information it's working with.

No matter how accomplished you are, marketing yourself as an executive is a skill to be acquired.

Your brand isn't enough anymore.
