Control what you can control.

I’m launching my new business in April.

A few weeks ago, a marketing partner of mine told me “Great, we have plenty of time. Let’s chat in March.”

But I know how it goes.

I’d follow up in March.

Wouldn’t hear for a week, because people are busy.

Then we’d get into onboarding, but they have lots of clients so it would go slow.

And inevitably, we would not be ready for launch, or we would be sloppy about it to get started in time.

So I just lied.

I said “Oh, but I wanna do a pre-launch campaign in March, so we should start now.”

They said “OK,let’s hop on a call.”

Took a week to schedule.

Took another week and a half to get the actual onboarding process started.

Now we are in onboarding. That’s supposed to take 2 weeks, but I bet it takes 4.

And that means we will be ready to go 1-2 weeks ahead of time.

Just enough to handle an inevitable last minute change or crisis.

I can’t see the future, so I’m just trying to control what I can control.

And sometimes that means telling a white lie in the best interest of both parties.

How do you control what you can control?

This VC has 90 celebrity investors, money in 4 unicorns, and gets most of his deal flow...from Instagram?

I sat down with Marshall Sandman, co-founder of Animal Capital, to find out why:

1. Seed stage funds have to create alpha out of thin air. 

In Marshall's words:

"The Andreessens, the Founders Funds — they're indexing. They might invest in every single Y Combinator startup and they're totally fine when 60% or 90% fail. It doesn't matter to them. 

Seed stage funds have to go out and create alpha out of thin air. I would just like for a few more of those founders to show up at my door."

His answer was a daily Instagram Reel series targeting 300 videos. He's on Day 48.

2. Why Instagram and not LinkedIn? 

"Founders are scrolling Instagram at 1am to turn their brains off."

He'd know. He built Animal Capital by cold DMing 3,000 celebrities to find investors.  

80% of that outreach was on Instagram. 

LinkedIn is where founders go when they're in work mode. There's value in that - it's how I've built my own business.

But Instagram is where they actually live.

3. Keep the content tight, focused, and high value.

"If all you take away from today's video is that convertible notes are cheaper to raise than equity rounds — that's the takeaway."

Every video comes from a question someone sent him in the DMs.

He's responded to roughly 300 DMs and 90% of comments over the last 48 days. 

He knows it won't scale. He thinks it's worth it anyway.

40 founders have already reached out. 

Brian Kelly (The Points Guy) slid into his DMs. 

People are asking to invest in the fund itself.

"Even if one great founder comes out of 300 videos, I will have done my job."

Marshall's content playbook is what I call the Reverse Monetization Model in practice. 

Marshall isn't selling to his audience — he's using content to acquire the thing that matters most to his business: proprietary deal flow.

He's offering to give people money, they're coming to him, and he's picking winners who will generate him a much higher ROI. 

Hence, "reverse monetization".

It's also a reminder that your audience isn't necessarily where you think they are. While ICPs are a useful tool, customers are human beings with full lives outside of work - even in B2B.

Phil Spencer’s the one who is guilty of destroying XBox. 

He didn’t do it fast, either. 

He made it slow, with many years of bad decisions and worse programming.

Long-term poisoning. 

A thousand cuts. 

An insidious cancer.

But yea, let’s get mad about the new CEO who hasn’t even done anything yet.

When the “gamer guy” y’all are “wishing well”already destroyed what you and I used to love.

What are the best startups raising money in the Creator Economy right now?
I want to know which ones are:

- Raising Seed, Series A, or Series B
- Serving a huge segment of Creators by solving a painful problem
- Launched product with signs of product-market fit (Seed) or actual product-market fit and meaningful revenue (Series A+) 
- Great economics (profitable or obvious path to profitability)

- follower counts
- view counts
- bio content
- bio link info
- if they do brand deals, promote affiliates, have OF, sell merch, etc.
- like 20 other things

Across YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, X, Twitch, and more....

What to do after getting laid off….

Start a business. Maybe not your dream, but the new reality of the world.

You were meant for more than filing TPS reports so your CEO can get a $100M bonus for laying you off.

Corporate jobs are a fairly new concept, born out of the Industrial Revolution.

Before that, you either worked for a government entity (the minority - these jobs were #goals) or you were partn of a small business.

- Farmers selling at market
- Shops and taverns and their owners and staff
- Blacksmiths, weavers, dressmakers, cobblers, carpenters, and other tradespeople and their apprentices

Then the Industrial and Computer and Internet Revolutions happened and created huge corporations filled with millions of white collar workers.

For a while, those jobs paid really well.

Now, a gallon of milk is $5, a $5 burger is $15, and rent and childcare together cost more than the median income of the US.

And with 23% effective unemployment (accounting for people who are making poverty wages or have given up), companies have no incentive to raise salaries.

As corporate jobs are quickly eliminated and wages decline, I believe we're going to return to a new paradigm of small businesses entrepreneurship and employment.

Primarily housed on the internet.

Entirely driven by content.

That's the thesis behind my new business, Creator Access Network - to help enable this new small business paradigm and build the Creator Middle Class.

Because corporate jobs aren't how anyone is going to achieve the American Dream anymore.
