A lot of people ask me where community capital is really going in Europe…

So let me answer it in a very concrete way!

In 2026, Over Ventures will work to help companies raise more than €20M through community-based fundraising (trying to over double the 2025 result).

Not as a slogan… As the sum of many well-designed, well-timed operations!

After 2025, one thing is clear:
this is no longer an “alternative” channel or a nice add-on for marketing. It has become a structural part of how early and growth-stage companies raise capital.

What we’re seeing on the ground is interesting:

– Founders use the community to validate, accelerate and de-risk rounds.
– VCs increasingly accept and sometimes expect a retail or community leg.
– Platforms are evolving from marketplaces into real fintech infrastructure.

And most importantly, the crowd is no longer just capital… It’s signal.

Signal on pricing
Signal on traction
Signal on market credibility

That’s why this year isn’t about chasing volume. It’s about proving again that community capital can be:

	•	scalable
	•	and compatible with institutional capital

I’m sharing this objective publicly because I believe in building in the open. Numbers force clarity. Clarity forces discipline.

Most startups still do the same thing when they raise capital…

They plan and try to allocate equity just to #VC investors and Angels.

Rarely they plan allocate equity to the people who actually use, love, and validate their product every day.

That model worked… of course!
But it’s no longer the only one that makes sense.

There’s a growing middle ground that more #founders are starting to explore:
keep the institutional round intact, but intentionally carve out a small allocation for the #community.

Not instead of VCs but alongside them.

Because a 5-10% community allocation doesn’t weaken a round. In many cases, it strengthens it.

It turns customers into long-term believers.
It creates alignment instead of pure consumption. It adds distribution, advocacy, and resilience that doesn’t show up in a term sheet but absolutely shows up in execution.

From what I see across Europe and the US, this isn’t about “democratising” for ideology’s sake. It’s about building stronger companies.

VCs bring capital, structure, and governance.
Communities bring signal, adoption, and trust.

When those two things work together, companies don’t just raise money faster
they scale with more conviction.

The question for founders is no longer “VC or crowd?” It’s “where does the community fit in the round?”

And that’s a much more interesting question to ask in 2026!

Last week European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) published its Market Report “Crowdfunding in the EU 2025”.

For those less familiar with it, ESMA (European Securities and Markets Authority) is the EU authority responsible for supervising and monitoring financial markets, including #crowdfunding platforms operating under the ECSPR regulation.

Important clarification on the data:
Despite the “2025” title, the report is entirely based on 2024 market data, collected from national regulators across the EU.

Some key takeaways from ESMA:
	•	€4.25bn raised via regulated crowdfunding in the EU in 2024
	•	Market still largely loan-based, not equity-driven
	•	Retail investors dominate (≈88%)
	•	Strong geographic concentration: 5 countries = 80%+ of volumes
	•	Limited cross-border capital flows

It’s a solid, institutional snapshot of where EU crowdfunding stands today.

That said, this is where the perspective differs from what we do at Over Ventures.

📌 ESMA looks at crowdfunding as a regulated market segment.
📌 ECCL our report (European Community Capital Landscape) looks at community capital as an evolving capital formation ecosystem.

ECCL goes beyond:
	•	equity crowdfunding only
	•	regulated platforms only
	•	no real estate and renewables 

It includes:
	•	hybrid models (club deals, co-investments, secondary transactions)
	•	exits, write-offs, and real liquidity signals
	•	founder, investor, and platform behavior
	•	forward-looking trends, not just backward-looking reporting

The European Community Capital Landscape 2025 (ECCL) will be officially presented on 19 February 2026 in Milan, together with Italian Tech Alliance and Fondazione Giacomo Brodolini as the starting point of the ECCL European Roadshow.

I have a background of 25 years in tech and traditional entrepreneurship, with several businesses co-founded (with some fails and some successes), funds raised from Angels/crowd/casual/VC investors while staying consciously in the super - immature Italian ecosystem, with a track of a venture studio, a venture accelerator and two corporate accelerators launched, an undefined number of new founders mentored, and some policies succesfully designed to support entrepreneurship and venture business in my country.

Io credo seriamente che qualsiasi startup founder europeo che in questo momento abbia la holding in Delaware mentre in realtà opera, sviluppa, scala stando ben piantato in UE, DEBBA fare una scelta di dignità, serietà, etica, e si prepari ad un #backfliptoEU. 

Lo schema dual company (testa negli USA, execution in UE) era questionabile prima, ma oggi è proprio vergognoso usare casa propria come una località terzomondista dove pagare poco il personale, ma mettendo tutto il valore reale (governance societaria, IP, tasse, ma anche peso geopolitico) oltre oceano. 

Scegliere sempre e solo quello che conviene, anziché quello che è giusto, genera scenari mostruosi. 

È ora di difendere il tipo di società che stiamo costruendo in #Europa anche con questo tipo di azioni. Credo che la European Commission, la presidente Ursula von der Leyen, la commissaria Ekaterina Zaharieva, e l'iniziativa EU–INC dovrebbero avviare dei dialoghi con i founder per un pre-roll delle #startup e #scaleup pronte a rientrare in Europa sotto il 28th regime. 

E se non lo fa la UE, credo che dovrebbero pensare di provarci singole nazioni europee, semplificando il regime societario per le società tech e creando una finestra semplificata per il rientro anche con finanza o incentivi ad hoc.
