All there is to it really.

I'm going to settle this right now:

If you can count it, it's fewer.
If you can't count it, it's less.

"There were fewer emails to read."
vs
"I had less work to do."

Easy.

You can't write something worth reading until you've lived something worth writing.

Shorter isn't better.

Don't write: "He was mean."

Write: "He'd cheat a widow out of her last coins, just because he could."

Show, don't tell.

Even if it takes longer.

Delete "that".

Don't write "He thought that it was a good idea."

Write: "He thought it was a good idea."

Cleaner, and easier to read.

(If it breaks the sentence, put it back.)

Read a real book.

X-Twitter rots your brain and spoils your writing.

So do most self help and business books.

Pick up a classic novel instead.

You'll write better.

By age 30 you should have realised writing is the most powerful skill in the modern world.

It's wild how many terrible writers make amazing money because they just keep putting themselves out there and never doubt their ability.

Something to think about

Writing is a skill, not a talent.

You can learn.

You can improve.

Everything is online now.

Everything is writing.

Never neglect it.

The world belongs to the writer who writes even when nobody will ever read it.

Sometimes I write at night.
Sometimes I write in the morning.
Sometimes I write at lunch.
Sometimes I write on my phone.
Sometimes I write at the desk.

The important thing is writing every day, not where or what time you do it.

Writer's block is just a fancy word for laziness.

Avoid negatives.

Never write "He wasn't the best of shots"

When you can write "He was a bad shot"

Your readers brain will skip the negative, then have to go back and correct it, which jars them out of the reading trance.

Rephrase it.

Stop overthinking.

Write it. Edit it. Publish it.

Move on to the next thing.

1/100 aspiring authors will start writing.
1/100 of those will finish the book.
1/100 of those will publish.

I thought it might be just another business update. 

It wasn't.

This one focused on Redeemed and the lives they touch right here in our city.

Real stories. 

Real people. 

𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙗𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚.

I listened to Laura share how Redeemed gave a woman her second chance. 

You could see how much it meant. 

Not just to her, but to everyone around her.

It made me pause. 

We talk about impact in business all the time. 

But it's different when you see it up close.

It's a reminder. 

Numbers matter, but people matter more.

Supporting Redeemed feels less like charity, more like being part of a quiet chain of good.

𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘮𝘦𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘬. 

This one did.

If you get the chance, look beyond the numbers.

Sometimes, the biggest impact isn't in a spreadsheet. 

𝙄𝙩'𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙤𝙣𝙚'𝙨 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮.

Walked into my first-ever Society of Petroleum Engineers International Hydraulic Fracturing Technical Conference this week. 

𝘋𝘪𝘥𝘯'𝘵 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵. 

Figured I'd see a lot of the usual, booths, handshakes, recycled talking points.

From the jump, the energy in the room was different. 

𝗜𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗱, 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱. ⚡

Everyone in the building knew the oil and gas landscape is changing fast, and nobody's in the mood for lip service. 

There's real pressure on the industry, and you could feel it in every conversation.

The main panel: "Hydraulic Fracturing 2035: Goals, Challenges and the Path Forward," moderated by Elena Melchert 

Some key themes that hit home:

𝟭. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗴𝗮𝗽 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹. Everyone admits it. The industry is facing more eyes, more regulations, and a public that's not buying the old narratives. Ignoring this is not an option. Operators are finally being forced to talk about how they earn trust instead of how they avoid scrutiny.

𝟮. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. New frac techniques, better data, smarter controls. But there's still pushback, still a sense of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." The next decade will belong to the outfits that move first, not the ones who wait it out.

𝟯. 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿. Everyone's run out of fat to trim. Now it's about genuine efficiency, making better choices, not just cheaper ones. You can't cut your way to long-term dominance. You have to build new value.

𝟰. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴. No sugar-coating it. Young talent isn't showing up like it used to. Lots of talk about mentorship, internships, new kinds of outreach. Companies offering "cool perks" that nobody under thirty cares about. The panel called it out,if you want new blood, give them something real to work on.

𝟱. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿. Not just PR or selfies at charity events. Real impact. Building real roots in the places drilled and deployed. Companies that ignore this get left behind, fast.

I kept thinking about my own world, brand visibility, workplace culture, the real heartbeat behind a successful company. 

The lessons translate. 

Visibility is nothing without trust. 

Swag and workwear mean nothing if they don't reflect who you actually are as an organization. 

You can't buy reputation. 

𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘪𝘵, 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘣𝘺 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘬, 𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘣𝘺 𝘥𝘢𝘺. 🧱

None of this blend-into-the-background boring stuff. 

People stepped in for a drink and walked out with stories, selfies, and new connections. 

And yes, the "slope" was only ten feet long, but that didn't stop grown adults from living out their après-ski dreams in the middle of downtown Houston.

You couldn't miss it on social. 

People tagged the brand, posted stories, and made sure everyone knew where the real party was. 

Think about it: How often do you see people organically promote a trade show event? 

In this case, the crowd did the work.

This isn't luck. 

It's strategy.

Anyone can place an order for swag. 

Few will dream up a mini mountain inside a bar and then pull it off.

Here's what most companies miss:
𝙂𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩 𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙘𝙝 𝙞𝙨 𝙤𝙣𝙡𝙮 𝙖 𝙛𝙤𝙤𝙩 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙤𝙤𝙧. Nobody bonds over another tote bag.
𝙋𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙘𝙧𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙨, 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨. Make them feel something, and they'll remember your name.
𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙙𝙤𝙚𝙨𝙣'𝙩 𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙠 𝙖𝙩 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚. It gives them something to share.

The Olivia Gibbs team turned a fleeting trade show moment into a brand memory that outlasted the event itself. 

They didn't just fight for attention; they became the main event.

I see this all the time: corporate decision-makers in Oil & Gas, Energy and Construction sectors feeling pressured to "do more" at events. 

But breakthrough isn't about outspending or out-shouting. 

It's about creating moments worth retelling.

Everyone 𝙇𝙊𝙑𝙀𝙎 to talk about "being authentic" in sales.

But let's tell the truth, putting yourself out there is 𝗔𝗪𝗞𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗗.

I'm talking full-on, sweat-under-your-arms, "do they see my hands shaking?" awkward.

Nobody wants to admit:

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻'𝘁 𝘀𝗺𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗵-𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘀.
𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆'𝗿𝗲 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆, 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲.

I learned this the hard way, back in my early days.

I'm standing in a conference room, pitching branded workwear to a group of Oil & Gas execs.

Half of them look bored.

One guy is probably playing Candy Crush under the table.

I'm over here, fumbling with my samples, trying not to drop a box of hi-vis vests.

I blurt out and turned a shade of beet red, "Honestly, I never thought I'd be this excited about reflective tape."

They laughed.

And suddenly, they were paying attention.

And then I was reminded. 

People buy from people they 𝙆𝙉𝙊𝙒, 𝙇𝙄𝙆𝙀, and 𝙏𝙍𝙐𝙎𝙏

We all say it.

But most folks forget the "human" part.

Here's what vulnerability in sales actually looks like:

1. Admitting when you don't know the answer (without turning into a puddle).
2. Sharing a story about the time your branded polos arrived two sizes too small, and you looked like you borrowed clothes from your nephew.
3. Owning your mistakes, instead of blaming "supply chain disruptions" (aka, you forgot to click "send").

It's not about being perfect.

𝙄𝙩'𝙨 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙗𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡.

Newsflash:

Nobody trusts a walking LinkedIn profile.

They trust the person who admits they get nervous.

Or that they once spilled coffee on a client's custom embroidered jacket before the big reveal.

Vulnerability cuts through the noise.

It connects.

It reminds people you're not selling to check off a quota.

You're selling because you believe you can actually help.

BUT.....You have to put yourself out there again and again.

Even when you'd rather eat your own business cards.

You'll get rejected.

You'll make mistakes.

You'll have days where your "big idea" lands with a thud.

But every time you show up as yourself, awkward, honest, sleeves rolled up, you stand out in an industry full of copy-paste sales scripts.

So next time you feel that cringe creeping up?

Lean in.

Crack the joke you think might bomb.

Admit you're excited about something weird.

Ask the "dumb question."

𝘗𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘮𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴.

And if all else fails, just remember:
There's nothing wrong with sweating through your shirt,

𝗠𝘆 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮:
1. Wear the ugly-but-supportive shoes. Style can wait.
2. Hydrate. Not just with bad coffee.
3. If you say "let's connect" one more time, actually do it.
4. Don't be the person who collects swag and leaves. Network.
5. Smile. It makes your elevator pitch at least 40% less awkward. (Science? No. Personal data? Absolutely.)

The real win isn't in the number of handshakes. 🤝
It's in making that one solid connection, learning something useful, or even just sharing a laugh with someone who's also limping toward the exit.

SLB broke it down like this:

The gap between innovation and regulation is shrinking. Faster product cycles mean compliance can't be an afterthought.

Supply chain headaches aren't going away. Materials traceability, banned substances, and documentation are now non-negotiable.

The era of "good enough" documentation is over. Regulators expect full transparency, not just easy check-the-box answers.

I looked around the room. 

People were actually taking notes.

That last point stuck with me. 

We've all seen companies paralyzed by new rules, reactive, slow, always playing catch-up.

But I also met leaders yesterday who treat new compliance standards like a puzzle to solve. 

Not a burden, but a chance to stand out.

The day wasn't just about regulations.

Last week, I showed up to the AADE Houston lunch ready to half-listen through the same old industry chatter.

𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘬 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘥 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘮𝘦.

He wasn't pitching geothermal as the new king. 👑

He was talking synergy. 

𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 

Not a zero-sum game.

Oil and gas already has the skill set, the hardware, and the mindset to make geothermal thrive. 

The same rigs and teams that punch holes for oil could draw heat from the earth. 

𝙉𝙤 𝙧𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣, 𝙣𝙤 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙨𝙘𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙘𝙝.

That's when it clicked. 

Geothermal isn't a threat. 

It's an ally waiting at the edge of the field, ready to get in the game if we're smart enough to bring them on.

Here's what I learned:

The drilling technology? 𝘎𝘦𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘭 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘴 𝘪𝘵.
The safety standards? 𝘖𝘪𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘨𝘢𝘴 𝘸𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘶𝘢𝘭.
Field logistics, supply chains, workforce management? 𝘈𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦.
The project scale and deadlines? 𝘖𝘪𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘨𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮𝘴 𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘭𝘦 𝘣𝘪𝘨𝘨𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘴 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘥𝘢𝘺.

So why do we act like it's a competition?

Maybe it's pride. 

Maybe it's habit. 

Maybe it's just easier to stick with what you know and ignore the new kid.

Some of the smartest operators are already doubling up, blending geothermal with their traditional projects, keeping crews busy, and taking new revenue off the table that would've gone to someone else.

This isn't about "disruption."

If you want to talk buzzwords, fine.

What do I actually do as an oil and gas business development consultant?

The best moments at a charity golf tournament don't happen on the green.

"Are you awake???"

They say time flies when you're having fun. 

I still laugh at his dad jokes. 

Mostly at him, sometimes with him.

We have an entire language of eye rolls, sighs, and "really?" looks.

We've survived launching and putting a boat on a trailer 250 times. 🛥️

That's a legally binding level of teamwork.

Big moments, sure, we've had them. 

𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘧𝘧 𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘥𝘢𝘺:

Sideways glances across crowded rooms

Knowing exactly how to push each other's buttons, then pretending it was "accidental" ☠️

We've seen each other at our best (promotion, celebration, nailing a new recipe on the first try).

We've seen each other at our worst (flu, family drama, hardships).

My advice? 

Don't marry someone you can live with. 

Marry the one you can laugh with when all hell breaks loose.

I won't pretend it's all magic. 

𝙒𝙚 𝙜𝙚𝙩 𝙤𝙣 𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝 𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧'𝙨 𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙚𝙨. 

He and our daughter leave a trail wherever they go. 

Sometimes we'd both rather be on our phones than talk about our feelings. 

That's normal.

But I'd pick the same person, every time, even though he says "not it" when I just made the kid's quesadillas for 3 nights in a row. 

If you've clocked in more than a few years with someone and you're still willing to split the last slice of pizza, you're doing it right.

Cheers to twenty years, and to still being in love. 

Anyone else out there counting in decades?

Driving into downtown Houston from the suburbs is rarely on my list of favorite things.

The traffic. 

The parking. 

The feeling that I'm losing hours I'll never get back, sitting bumper to bumper on I-10, while emails pile up on my phone.

But over the past few months, I've started to notice something. 

Every trip into downtown, whether it's to visit a client or attend another industry event, is a chance to see the city with new eyes. 

I decided to stop resenting the drive and start paying attention to what's around me.

Houston is a city that hides its beauty behind highways and concrete. 

Blink, and you'll miss out. 

I spent years treating downtown like an obligation. 

Get in, get out, move on with the day.

Now, I make myself slow down.

The mural that wraps around the parking garage on Main. 

The tiny art galleries tucked into old buildings. 

The food trucks, music on random corners, the communities coming together in ways that don't exist in the suburbs.

Even the skyline looks different when you're on foot, instead of behind your windshield. 

There's an energy, a grit, a sense of possibility that gets lost when you only see Houston at 80 miles an hour.

I think about how easy it is for all of us to get stuck in our bubbles. 

Safe, predictable, convenient. 

We run our businesses, meet our deadlines, take care of our families. 

It's comfortable, but it can also be blinding.

Stepping outside my routine, literally leaving the zip code, has given me new creative energy. 

New ideas for helping brands stand out. 

New connections with people I would never meet in my neighborhood. 

Even the hassles have a purpose if you pay attention.

It's pushed me to ask better questions with my clients. 

What do they love about Houston that doesn't show up in their branding? 

What stories are they missing because they're moving too fast? 

How can we build something that feels as alive and authentic as the city?

There's a lesson in here about business, but it's personal too. 

Growth doesn't happen in the comfort zone. 

Inspiration shows up when you do the inconvenient thing. 

Sometimes you find a mural, or a conversation, or a bit of music that makes the whole trip worthwhile.

Next time you find yourself dreading the drive, maybe don't. 

There's more waiting for you outside your bubble than you think.
