Difficult people test your communication skills.

Here's how you likely respond:

Either react or retreat.  

But both will cost you in the long run.

I've worked with 100s of founders...

All of them have dealt with at least one of the following: 

- Demanding clients
- Pushy partners
- Meetings that spiral

In all these cases, you need to balance being "nice" with staying in control.  

Here are the techniques I use to handle high-stakes conversations:

1️⃣ Don’t react. Redirect.
↳ Pause, then say: “Let’s focus on the outcome you need." 

This pulls the conversation back to value instead of emotion. 

2️⃣ Name the pattern, not the person.
↳ “We’ve moved the deadline three times. How do we make this stick?”

This makes them accountable, rather than defensive. 

3️⃣ Use silence on purpose.
↳ After stating your price or boundary, stop talking.

Silence creates pressure, and when you fill it, you instantly lose control. 

4️⃣ Make them repeat it.
↳ If someone says something aggressive, ask them to repeat it. 

Watch how they'll soften or rethink immediately.  

5️⃣ Ask what’s really going on.
↳ “This feels like more than pricing. What’s the real concern?”

You can’t solve what isn’t surfaced.

6️⃣ Set boundaries early.
↳ “Here’s what’s in scope. Anything beyond this needs a new agreement.”

You'll avoid endless rounds of negotiation. 

7️⃣ Don’t match their energy.
↳ Lower your voice. Walk through it step-by-step.

Calm people control conversations.

8️⃣ Call out the cost of delay.
↳ “Each week this stays undecided costs you X. When will that become a problem?”

Inaction only changes when it comes with a price tag.

As a founder, it's your job to manage difficult interactions, 
And keep your emotions and opinions in check. 

By staying calm and in control of the room,
You'll create opportunities that open doors.

If you run a business, marketing isn’t optional. 

It’s part of your job. 

Founder, creator, operator, it doesn’t matter.
If you don’t understand the fundamentals of marketing, growth will always feel slow.

Yet a lot of people casually throw around terms like “conversion rate” or “funnels”
Without really understanding what they mean.

So here are 15 marketing terms worth knowing if you want to scale:

1. CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost)
↳ The average cost required to acquire 1 new paying customer.

2. NPS (Net Promoter Score)
↳ A score that measures how likely your customers are to recommend your business to others.

3. CTR (Click-Through Rate)
↳ The percentage of people who click after seeing your ad or link.

4. Conversion Rate
↳ The % of visitors who complete a desired action (purchase, signup, etc.).

5. Funnel
↳ The journey someone takes from discovering your brand to becoming a customer.

6. A/B Testing
↳ Comparing 2 variations of something (ad, page, email) to see which performs better.

7. ROAS (Return on Ad Spend)
↳ How much revenue you generate for every $1 invested in ads.

8. CPC (Cost Per Click)
↳ The amount you pay each time someone clicks your advertisement.

9. MQL (Marketing Qualified Lead)
↳ A lead who's shown interest but isn’t fully ready to invest yet.

10. Impressions
↳ The total number of times your content or ad appears on someone’s screen.

11. Reach
↳ The number of unique individuals who saw your content or ad.

12. Organic Traffic
↳ Visitors who find you through unpaid sources like SEO, social media, or referrals.

13. Paid Traffic
↳ Visitors generated through advertising channels like Google, Facebook, or YouTube.

14. Churn Rate
↳ The % of customers who cancel or stop using your product over time.

15. Lead Magnet
↳ A free resource offered in exchange for contact info (a guide, checklist, trial, etc.).

If these metrics aren’t part of your everyday thinking,
you’re making marketing decisions "without visibility".

Most businesses are still doing B2B Marketing backwards.

Founders jump straight to outreach or ads before building the foundation. 
Then they wonder why nothing converts.

I’ve seen this across dozens of B2B teams.
Strong product, weak positioning.

Here’s the system, and where most businesses break it:

Pillar 1️⃣: Build visibility for people who aren’t ready yet

90% of your market isn’t buying. They’re watching, learning, and forming opinions.

If you’re invisible when the need hits, you lose to whoever they already trust.

How to execute:

✅️ Choose 2–3 content pillars tied to the problems you solve.
✅️ Publish consistently where your buyers already spend time.
✅️ Share practical frameworks instead of surface-level crap.

Pillar 2️⃣: Track who’s actually paying attention

Not all engagement is equal. Some people scroll, while others research.

And that's where the biggest revenue sits.

How to execute:

✅️ Track repeat engagement across posts, emails, and profile views.
✅️ Centralize this data in a CRM or simple tracking sheet.
✅️ Build a list of high-intent prospects.  

Pillar 3️⃣: Amplify what already works

Ads are there to expand reach and reinforce awareness.

If it doesn’t work organically, ads won’t rescue it. You need to leverage what already works. 

How to execute:

✅️ Promote your strongest organic content.
✅️ Retarget decision makers who’ve already engaged.
✅️ Prioritize repetition over aggressive calls to action.

Pillar 4️⃣: Capture demand when it shows up

When someone is ready, they want speed and directness. 
If you respond slowly or make it confusing to move forward, the interaction dies.

How to execute:

✅️ Make your offer clear on your profile and website.
✅️ Use simple booking links or forms.
✅️ Offer low-friction entry points.

Pillar 5️⃣: Reach out to warm but silent prospects

Some people are interested but won’t make the first move.

But remember, warm outreach converts at a significantly higher rate than cold outreach.

How to execute:

✅️ Engage consistently with high-intent prospects, even if they don't respond.
✅️ Send context-aware messages that reference their activity.
✅️ Build simple outreach routines each week.

Each pillar builds on the previous one.

You can’t capture demand if nobody knows you.
And you can’t amplify your reach if you don’t know what resonates.

The brands that master this are the ones that will grow in 2026. 

The simplest way to think about it?

Make yourself visible to as many people as possible,
And always keep your ICP in mind in terms of how you can solve their problem.

↳ Audit the funnel stage by stage.
↳ A/B test one variable at a time.

The more insights you have on what works and what doesn't, the better.

✅ Retention & churn
↳ Identify the “why” behind cancellations.
↳ Improve onboarding (the first 30 days matter most).

Get to know your customers better, and watch churn go down.  

✅ Pipeline quality
↳ Tighten qualification criteria (no more “maybe” deals).
↳ Remove stale deals over 60–90 days.

Focus on your most interested potential customers. 

✅ Deal velocity 
↳ Track time from first touch to close.
↳ Create urgency with deadlines or incentives

Always drive people to take action ASAP.

The "boring stuff" is where cash flow lives, and where companies are won or lost. 

You can have the best brand and the best deck.
But if your CAC is broken or churn is leaking, none of it matters.

Growth wasn't meant to be easy.

Accept that fact, and watch your company scale.

Stop polishing the outer ring.
Start tightening the core.

Founders waste $1000s chasing growth hacks...

But ignore what actually scales a business. 

Everyone wants the tactic that promises a spike in revenue.

So they bounce from strategy to strategy. 
They test every platform and copy whatever worked for someone else. 

Growth stays inconsistent because they're not prioritizing properly. 

The problem is that 95% of founders are optimizing at the wrong layer. 
They focus on tactics while the fundamentals underneath are weak.

But business growth has layers, and starting at the top won't help you get ahead. 

Here are the 4 layers, from surface activity to what actually drives growth:

Layer 1️⃣: The Surface Level
Goal: Get customers fast

What this includes:

* Growth hacks and viral plays
* New channels every quarter
* Discounts and flash sales
* Paid ads without real attribution

What happens:
Revenue spikes briefly and customers churn, but nothing sticks.   

Layer 2️⃣: Systems and Structure
Goal: Build repeatability

What this includes:

* Funnels and sales sequences
* Outbound cadences
* Content calendars
* Basic CRM tracking

What happens:
Activity increases and deals close more consistently, but scale still feels heavy.

Layer 3️⃣: The Economic Engine
Goal: Predictable, profitable growth

What this includes:

* Healthy unit economics (LTV meaningfully higher than CAC)
* Retention and expansion
* Clear ICP and positioning
* Pricing that reflects value 

What happens:
Profit improves, and referrals rise. Growth becomes more predictable.

Layer 4️⃣: The Foundation
Goal: Long-term leverage

What this includes:

* A clear value proposition
* Solving a painful problem
* Delivering measurable outcomes
* A model that works at scale

What happens:
Marketing gets easier, and customers advocate for you. Growth sustains.

Most founders operate in reverse.

They run ads before product-market fit.
They build funnels before margins work.
They chase reach while ignoring retention.

If the foundation is weak, tactics won’t save you.

Start at the bottom, and strengthen what works.  
Then, layer tactics on top.

The orgs that scale build on solid fundamentals and let leverage do the work.

Stop optimizing tactics, and start reinforcing fundamentals.

Most founders get this wrong 👇

Expenses are things you minimize. Assets are things you optimize. 

And that's the difference between companies that scale and companies that stay stuck.

One builds value that drives growth, while the other just burns budget.

If you treat marketing like a cost, you’ll look for ways to spend less.
You'll cut the budget, pause campaigns, and wait until next quarter.

But if you treat marketing like an asset?

You’ll look for ways to build more value.
You'll double down on what works and increase long-term equity.

And you'll scale at lightning speed.

The problem is that most companies run marketing like an expense line:

❌ They cut when times are tight.
❌ They measure spend, not value created.
❌ They optimize for the cheapest cost per lead instead of the highest lifetime value.

And then they wonder why they never grow. 

Marketing done right builds three long-term assets:

✅ Brand equity → trust, authority, preference.
✅ Content & distribution → assets that work when you’re not.
✅ Customer relationships → referrals, expansion, retention. 

A campaign that starts and stops is an expense.
A brand that gets stronger every year is an asset.

If you want to shift from expense thinking to asset building, here's what you need to do 👇

1️⃣ Measure returns, as well as spend
↳ Stop obsessing over clicks and impressions.
↳ Start tracking LTV, CAC payback period, and revenue per marketing dollar.

If you can’t tie it to profit, you’re managing costs, not assets.

2️⃣ Build for scale
↳ Campaigns end, systems don’t.
↳ Focus on SEO, brand authority, content libraries, and advocacy programs.

Note what drives growth, and action it.

3️⃣ Combine brand and direct response
↳ Branding builds trust.
↳ Direct response converts it.

Together, they create an engine that scales over time.

4️⃣ Always optimize for profit
↳ Cheap leads with low LTV destroy value.
↳ High-margin customers build it.

Track contribution to profit, not just leads.

5️⃣ Reallocate capital based on returns
↳ Assets get optimized continuously.
↳ If a channel produces 5x returns, scale it.

If returns decline, cut fast, because capital follows performance.

You need to ask yourself: “What assets are we building?”

Expenses get cut when budgets tighten.
Assets get protected and scaled. 

The companies that win can clearly show their marketing is growing in value.

And that’s exactly what happens when marketing stops being a cost center and becomes a growth engine.

So, be honest: 
Are you managing marketing as an expense or building it as an asset?
