After leadership and management training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, employed throughout early military career in a number of progressively accountable leadership, management, training and leadership development roles.  Began operational career in 40th Regiment RA, leading and managing teams of from 30 to 120 people and culminating in roles as Adjutant (Head of HR) and then Battery Commander (Department Head) in 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery (3RHA).  Always promoted at the earliest opportunity, and at the head of peer group, finished career as a Major.

Earlier in career was selected for and passed the demanding P-Company parachute selection course serving as a Forward Observation Officer with 7th Para RHA in support of 2 Para.  Attended and passed a number of specialist Artillery technical training programs as well as the Junior Command and Staff Course (JOTES2), Defence Technology Course (DTC MA) and the Advanced Command and Staff Course (psc(j)).

A number of these roles were performed in the most demanding and pressurised leadership and management environment of operational military deployments including operations in the Balkans (Bosnia & Herzegovina and FYROM) and Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom).  Also deployed as part of the United Nations (UN) force in Cyprus (UNFCYP) during the eventful period covering the Islands unification referendum and Cyprus' accession to the European Union (EU)
