P/T Interim Commercial Finance Lead ► Digital Business Change Projects

West Leicestershire CCG: Supported implementation and delivery of programmes to achieve the CCG’s Operational and Primary Medical Care Plan.

Projects included a brand new £2.3m Federation QIPP scheme (Quality, Innovation, Productivity and Prevention), which involved working with GP Federations to deliver integrated working, reduce variation, improve quality and to support the financial sustainability of general practice.

As Project Manager, achievements and responsibilities included:
•	Implementing financial analysis of complex data sets
•	Contractual KPI setting and performance monitoring
•	Developing and monitoring bespoke performance reporting
•	Developing and managing commercial contracts
•	Management of risk
•	Implementing Board reporting

I also developed a range of complex reporting tools and processes to enable teams to manage their data efficiently and to produce reports to demonstrate business case and project outcomes.  These included:
•	Patient access to, and outcomes of, MSK (musculoskeletal) services
•	GP achievement of dementia diagnosis targets
•	Home visiting service data analysis

Delivery Manager (Primary Care Redesign & Delivery) ► Commercial Projects

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust

Following my successful delivery of the DoH projects, I was asked to stay on to lead the department's business, finance and project functions.  In 2 roles over 10 years (I was promoted in 2013), I created, developed and led the new Pharmacy Business Team to support and manage business, finance, commercial, project and purchasing services across a diverse hospital department with 500 employees, 12 distinct business units, multiple commercial trading businesses and a budget of £115m.

Throughout this time I designed, implemented and continually improved team structures in response to the changing needs of the organisation.  This enabled the team to take on additional services and consolidate historically disparate services through various changes including Trust merger, department reorganisation and service expansion. I built and led a successful team of 25, and managed a range of multi-disciplinary services.

I was shortlisted for the 2013 East Midlands Leadership Academy Recognition Awards and achieved faciliator accreditation for the Franklin Covey Leadership Programme 'Great Leaders, Great Teams, Great Results'.

Responsibilities included:
•	Multi-disciplinary team and service development and leadership
•	Financial leadership - core budget £30m, 19 cost centres
•	Business/general management, planning and strategy
•	Commercial management and development of multiple growing business trading areas.  Created the Commercialisation Programme, raising £120k new profit and savings in year 1
•	Project and programme management - nominated for a Trust award for work on the Treatment Centre
•	Management of medicines purchasing and homecare support functions for the 4th largest Trust in the UK - budget £85m

•	Process improvement and efficiency
•	Member of the senior leadership team, responsible for development and delivery of the annual plan across all business functions
•	General management support to the Head of Service and senior clinical teams

Head of the Pharmacy Business Team / Pharmacy Business, Finance & Projects Manager

I was headhunted to return and lead 2 major Department of Health capital build projects:

• Project managed the capital build and relocation of the £2.1m Quality Control Unit (the Trust’s first NHS ProCure21 scheme), within time and budget
• Project managed the refurbishment of the £1.2m Non-Sterile Manufacturing Unit, within time and budget
• Led a range of smaller schemes including the relocation of Pharmacy satellites and refurbishment of the tablet packing unit

In all of these project roles, I:
• Managed project budgets, balancing client needs against financial constraints, contractor needs and quality/legislative requirements
• Created and managed project plans, using PRINCE2 methodologies, ensuring all internal and external parties maintained progress, solving problems as they arose to keep the projects on track
• Was the key project link between contractors, users, Estates & Trust departments
• Provided guidance on design, project processes, service co-ordination and minimising disruption to patients
• Represented the Trust in contract negotiations with senior contractor staff (director level) and senior Estates leads
• Set up and led key workstream groups, including IT, Finance, HR and Operational Services
• Produced business cases and revenue plans, with financial forecasts to highlight potential cost pressures and commercial risk
• Developed and managed Risk Registers, negotiating ownership, costs and mitigation between Contractors and the Trust

6 weeks into my starting in this role, the Project Director was excluded from the Trust.  I then took on a range of his duties, including ensuring sign-off on budgets and payments, having overall oversight of the 2 projects as a Project Board member, and reporting progress to the Department of Health.

Pharmacy Modernisation Projects Manager ► Capital Projects

Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Led a variety of projects and services: 

• Project managed the £3m “Patient Power” bedside TV initiative - the installation of TV/entertainment screens throughout the hospital.  This complex project required liaison and negotation with a number of parties incl. external contractors to agree specs & modifications and scheduling works around clinical activity / clinical teams, ensuring patient disruption was minimised.  This project required the chairing of multi-disciplinary project meetings of 25+ stakeholders (incl contractors, clinical leads, Finance, Estates, H&S) and co-ordinating work in the hospital

• Project managed a £3m construction scheme for 100+ units of “key worker” accommodation.  This involved working with a housing association, construction company, solicitors and Estates/Legal teams, to ensure co-ordination and management of work and contracts, to meet demand and timescales.  My tight management of this project ensured a completion date 2 months ahead of schedule

• Took over emergency management (when the existing team walked out) of the residential accommodation service, covering 250 accommodation units across 9 locations.  On taking over, I found a number of problems with how the service had been run, which had contributed to the team's resignation en masse.  My initial priority was to deal daily with clinical staff arriving from all over the world to find they had no available accommodation - utilising hotels, whilst building a daily picture of which units were occupied and which needed repair and refurbishment.  Working with the legal team, I commenced eviction proceedings for those tenants who were ineligible for NHS accommodation (e.g. private chefs..).  
Key improvements I made included:
- implementing new systems and processes to manage bookings, payments, deposits and contracts
- recruiting, training and leading a new team
- improving the level of service provided to clinical staff
- implementing and managing a refurbishment programme

Assistant Head of Facilities Management (Business)

A new role created jointly by the Head of Service and Director of Finance in response to a need for financial leadership and commercial acumen for a number of growing manufacturing and service businesses within the NHS.

Following my thorough review which highlighted a number of issues, gaps and concerns, I implemented my recommendations.  These centred around setting up the right business and financial systems, processes and reporting services to support the £2m+ commercial Pharmacy business:

• Developed the core pharmaceutical manufacturing costing model, which was presented to the Department of Health as groundbreaking work at the time.  This had a number of advantages:
- it ensured that costs were covered and prices were in line with the rest of the market.  This resulted in an additional £50,000 profit on one large commercial contract alone.  All profits were reinvested back into patient care
- it released clinical staff from the time and guesswork associated with estimating costs and prices - making better use of skill mix and ensuring pricing was accurate and consistent
- it provided assurance that the businesses - and individual contracts - were financially viable

• Developed business reporting systems to help clinical managers understand their results and influence sustainable spend and cost-effectiveness
• Developed new financial reporting processes across 8 cost centres, reducing errors from 38% of budget to negligible levels, supporting the ability of clinical staff to make better decisions
• Developed a staff funding model to track posts, costs and external funding, and to enable the Head of Service to manage pay budgets and forecast the impacts of workforce change

Pharmacy Planning & Performance Manager ► Commercial Business

After several years working with a range of clients across all accounting services, my aptitude for IT led to my promotion, to set up and lead a new IT consultancy business:

• This worked in parallel with the core business of providing management accounts services to a range of small to medium-sized businesses, across 4 office locations in the East Midlands 
• Managed a portfolio of over 70 SME clients, working with them to identify needs and recommend the right IT systems and software.  Provided an end to end service, from procurement through installation and set up of finance and information systems, offering bespoke training to business owners and their teams
• Supported the maintenance of their monthly management accounts reporting systems thereafter
• As the business grew, I supervised and managed other accountancy staff in the provision of management accounts and IT services
• Managed all in-house IT systems including hardware, accounts packages and general software
• Seeing the need for cohesive client data and the opportunity for better marketing, I designed and built a practice-wide client database in MS Access, which was used by the firm to manage 1,000+ clients
