GA4 for Button Click Conversion Tracking

This is a real client case:

Actual conversions: 22
GA4 was showing: 37


Today, a new client messaged:

“Hey Sobuj, we’ve set up GA4, but the data doesn’t match our actual conversions.”


After auditing the GA4 setup, the issue was clear.

The conversion tracking was configured based on button clicks.


What was happening?

↳ When a user clicked the button, GA4 counted it as a conversion.

↳ Even if the form was not submitted, the conversion was still recorded.


How it was fixed:

Conversion tracking was reconfigured based on the Thank You page, with a condition to ensure:

↳ The conversion fires only once per user

↳ Page reloads do not trigger duplicate conversions
