I absolutely hate the argument that AI has made an affiliate manager’s job completely irrelevant. I also hate the claim that AI has made affiliate marketing easier. Because it hasn’t. And if you are an AI enthusiast selling that narrative, I hate to break it to you, but you’re wrong.

There are two parts to this.

A. Yes, getting data has become easier.

I remember back in 2009, I used to go through different websites, search for affiliates manually, find their contact information, and verify whether their email addresses were even valid. Every single step had to be done manually for just one affiliate.

Now, with different tools and platforms, it has become incrementally easier to find contact details, competitor information, and other relevant data with just one click. 

I completely agree that AI has made search dramatically easier. Today, everyone has access to the same information. 

B. But because everyone now has access to the same information, everyone can reach the same affiliates. At every level.

That means top affiliates and larger media buyers receive hundreds of emails every day. The problem is that, in trying to use AI to become ultra-efficient and scale outbound, most people are sending the same emails and the same DMs to everyone.

And 100% of the time, these big affiliates can tell the message isn't personalized for them. This type of outreach never excites them because they don’t see any real effort. They don’t know whether your product is right for them, whether the commission structure makes sense, or whether the unit economics work. 

They have no clarity. And when you combine that with mass outreach, it completely kills their enthusiasm.

With all that being said, I agree that AI has made the job much faster. But at the same time, it has also made it easier to stand out.

Be a real human.

I know it sounds like a cliché at this point, but I genuinely believe most people have forgotten how to be human in the digital world over the last five years with the rise of AI.

Just be human.
Reach out like a human.
Start a normal conversation.
Personalize your message.
Explain why your specific offer or product is relevant to them.
Show them how they can build a real business with it and how it benefits their existing operations.

It’s that simple.

Care about them. Show that you are a real person who genuinely wants a mutually beneficial partnership. When you do that, you will see how many more affiliates you activate.

Contrary to what the internet currently suggests, sales will always be human first. If you don’t build trust, you won’t sell. And without a sales-driven approach, you will remain stuck at a minimal revenue number in your affiliate program.

I hope more managers understand this. I hope more brands understand this. I’ve seen the results firsthand over the last two years. It has become increasingly easier to work with affiliates simply by approaching them as humans first.

So eTail™ Palm Springs 2026 is officially behind us. Credible speakers. Meeting familiar faces. Having long convos. The event was everything that we expected it to be.

But more than that, I feel, there were discussions about 4 core areas. And trust me, it's worth paying attention to.

1. AI agents are moving from experimentation to execution.

This year, the conversation was about AI agents acting with autonomy; optimizing campaigns, managing workflows, personalizing journeys, and making micro-decisions in real time. The shift is from “AI as assistant” to “AI as operator.” Brands need to treat this as a core infrastructure.

2. Gen Z and Gen Alpha are forcing structural change.

These cohorts behave differently at a foundational level. Discovery happens on social. Trust is peer-driven. Attention is short and earned. You have to build ecosystems that feel native to their digital habits. That requires rethinking content, commerce, community, and even product development.

3. Long-term brand building is back in focus.

After years of performance-first thinking, the pendulum is swinging. Customer acquisition costs are volatile, paid channels are crowded, and short-term arbitrage is harder. The brands that are compounding are the ones investing in narrative, loyalty, and retention. 

4. TikTok is now the new obvious.

TikTok and TikTok Shop have firmly positioned themselves at the center of social commerce. It's not just about creators posting; it’s about integrating shop features, affiliates, paid media, and live shopping into a single growth engine.

Over the last 12 months, I have worked with more than 200 creators on TikTok. And for the past three years, I’ve consistently said the same thing: you cannot build or scale a modern affiliate program without putting TikTok at its center.

This is coming from someone who actively recruits media buyers and considers them major growth levers. 

I fully understand the value of performance marketers. But I genuinely believe that short-form creators, especially on TikTok, have enormous untapped potential, and many DTC brands are still underestimating it.

What sets TikTok apart from most other social platforms (although others are gradually adopting similar models) is its “For You” feed. Distribution on TikTok is primarily driven by content performance, not follower count. The size of a creator’s audience matters far less than how engaging, entertaining, or shareable the content is.

If a video captures attention, drives watch time, and encourages shares or saves, it gets distributed. Creativity and engagement are the primary variables. That fundamentally changes how affiliate programs should think about scale.

When creativity becomes the primary driver of performance, brands can deliver strong results by equipping creators with better angles, stronger hooks, and clearer messaging frameworks. The leverage is in the idea and the execution.

I’ve seen a creator sell over 100 units on the first day of a campaign going live. That level of immediate traction is powerful. And yet, many brands still treat TikTok as an experiment rather than a foundation.

Beyond creator partnerships, TikTok also supports performance through paid ads and features like live shopping. In many ways, it now sits at the core of social commerce. The integration of organic content, creator-driven affiliate sales, paid amplification, and live selling creates a flywheel effect that few other platforms currently match.

If TikTok is not a central part of your affiliate and growth strategy, there is a strong chance you are leaving meaningful revenue on the table.

Everyone talks about how AI has made affiliate recruitment more efficient. But I feel that AI has lowered the bar so much that doing the basics right now makes you stand out.

I would love to hear your take.

I don’t know how many brands are ready for this major shift. But AI influencers can be the biggest leverage for any DTC brand, especially in the beauty, wellness and lifestyle niche. If you don’t see the potential now, you’ll be left behind.

New-age brands are built on speed and trust. 
AI influencers offer both. 

They can be deployed across niches instantly, maintain a consistent brand voice, and generate content at a scale no human creator can match. 

For a DTC brand trying to own TikTok or Reels right now, that's a serious competitive edge.

But this is where most brands will get it wrong.
They'll treat AI influencers like a cost-cutting tool instead of a conversion asset.

Here’s what you can do to stay ahead of the curve by 2028:

1. Pair AI influencers with real data. A/B test AI-generated content against human creators to find what actually converts.

2. Keep the human layer in the strategy. AI handles volume. But for nuance, you need a human touch. Emotional storytelling still closes sales. 

3. Build audiences. AI influencers can nurture a following over time. If you build long-term affiliate funnels around them, conversions over time become easier for you.

You are still early.
We will see gigantic shifts in the space.

It’s important to keep a close eye on the advancements and adapt to the AI-driven brand marketing strategies.

At the recent EEE conference, I was talking to a founder about Shopify's new announcements: the Universal Commerce Protocol, Agentic Storefronts, and native AI search integrations with ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot.

Every review, every roundup, every mention is a signal that your brand is credible.

I've seen this work firsthand with multiple DTC brands we've worked with; the ones with strong affiliate ecosystems are already showing up in AI recommendations without doing anything extra.

The future of DTC discovery is AI-driven. The brands building this now will own the next wave of discovery. So start building for it now.
