I've had a few people asking me to help them hire a GTM engineer recently.

Here's the salary ranges they initially gave:
1 - $140k-$200k (in person NYC)
2 - $160k-$180k (remote)

Here's how I think about what you get at different salaries:

$100k-$150k = JR GTMe

$150k+ = Senior GTMes

$200k + remote = no life demons
You can't get these people in person. They live in the shadows (a dark room with blackout curtains lit up only by their 3 monitor setup) and don't go outside unless it's to grab Doordash. They get fixated on problems and think about them even while they're not "working". They were technical before LLMs. They were interested in sales and marketing long before GTMe was even a thing. They have experience selling stuff themselves. They're sometimes founders. They're often gamers. They're often huge nerds who see GTMe as a video game.

This is who you really want.

I think if you're going to pay someone $150k+ for a senior GTMe role just make the jump up to ~200k, make it remote, and find yourself a cracked no life GTMe.

AI doesn’t know what it’s like to be a human.

If your job is 100% done on a computer and doesn’t require any of the above - yea you might be cooked. But you’ll figure it out. You’ll pivot and find a way to make it work, because you always do.

If your job does require what I call the “human element” (like sales, marketing, product management, etc) you’ll be fine.

Yea your job is going to look different, but did you expect it to always be the same?
